Not sure this would take a better photo then a modern phone to be honest. Apart from the optical zoom.

Incorrect. This has a massive sensor and the photo quality would far outshine a phone, especially if you want to enlarge them and/or edit RAW files.

doesn't have a massive sensor at all
zoomed out to same view as a phone its probably pretty similar - the main (and huge) advantage here is the zoom and ease of controls

Nope. Sensor is a decent size. Took them to pieces for a tech project to build something (didn’t work but was fun trying).

sensor size is standard compact camera: 1/2.3"
samsung s8 has 1/2.55" which is pretty similar as well as a lens thats faster

it may be a bit better than a phone (not sure exactly) but the main advantage is zoom not quality

Might be worth checking with the seller if they can honour the cashback, they're a uk dealer so I would think it's okay even though bought on ebay?

Dropping the knowledge

And to add to this, Samsung/Apple/Google do a tremendous amount with software to capture better photos, I would be genuinely surprised if the average user didn't get better photos out of the latest phones (and it's not like the enthusiasts will be using this anyway).

So if you have a modern smartphone, I can't see much need to spend hundreds on an extra thing to carry. The only benefit I can see is if you need pocket sized optical zoom.

See above
Got the TZ60 for my daughter's birthday last year. Cost about £175 from John Lewis. She seems well pleased with it, especially the huge zoom function.
With regards to the on going debate whether this is worth getting over just using the smartphone. I have both and use both . Both my smartphone and TZ camera use Leica lenses. I use the smartphone for convenience mainly but you will always get a better quality of image from the camera everytime. However the photos taken on the modern smartphone are very close in quality. In low light the camera will be able to collect more light in a shorter time than the smartphone. In bright sunshine it is often difficult to see a smartphone screen and therefore you can't see what you are photographing.
The camera has a viewfinder to combat this. Also as mentioned before there is the zoom too.
So if your seldom going to use a zoom lens, in low light or in bright sunlight. Stick to the phone. However if you want a slightly better quality image take a look at this or the TZ60.

Wtf: the sensor on a phone is tiny, literally mm across. They have tiny sensors because the phones are so thin. The sensor on the camera will be much bigger. A sensor on a full frame SLR is 35mm, there's just no way you can fit a sensor this big in a phone or a even a compact camera sensor. I think some people are confusing resolution with sensor size...

if you bother reading the thread you will find that someone has actually stated the sensor sizes of this camera and an example smart phone
as a summary - imagine a square centimetre - you could fit nearly FOUR of this cameras sensors in that space

I have this as well having ‘upgraded’ from a tz60.

To be honest it’s just alright and if not using the zoom I honestly think my phones camera is every bit (if not more) as sharp as this.

I do a lot of photographing motorcycle racing (as a hobby) and the images are a bit disappointing. When turning the shutter speed high the iso obviously gets higher but the images are so noisy even on a glorious bright sunny day.

A bigger sensor would make such a difference and I’m now looking at going to a tz100 for the bigger sensor.

Trouble with the TZ100 is you loose the 30x zoom and end up with 10x zoom. Yeah it's sensor is larger so should be better at low light . Not sure why you should have a noisy image on a bright day even at high speed?

Yeah but 10 times zoom is still fairly adequate, and I agree with you. I have no idea either. At high speed having had a look at some images I took yesterday. The vast majority are unusable for anything other than Instagram

So the sensor shrinks when you zoom. That's an amazing feat of engineering (as per one of your posts). Or do you mean the usable area on the sensor used is smaller?

the only engineering here is the way you managed to get 'the sensor shrinks when you zoom' crap

where did i say that?

i gave the sensor sizes of this camera and an example smart phone - either accept them or dont

'Wtf: the sensor on a phone is tiny, literally mm across' you cried in horror!
well... the sensor size on tz80 is literally 6.17mm across... now catch your breath a second and calm down

they both have small sensors (cameras IS slightly bigger but not much), phone has a prime lens which is small.
camera has a zoom lens which is bigger so camera is bigger than a phone
the sensor isnt bigger because the camera is bigger
infact the sensor needs to stay small because of the required field of view with the compact lens
if the lens was bigger then the sensor could be bigger
its not, so it isn't

please reply soon to let us know you are ok

wow - thats the best you can do? no point so go to spelling criticism?
there arent any major spelling errors (infact without a space oh no!)
grammar and punctuation are not spelling and i dont really give a toss about them
doesnt mean i dont know how to use them but then its a deals forum last i checked... so i write as appropriate and/or however the hell i want

but then if you are so bothered about punctuation why did you use either a double period or a shortened ellipsis?
bit hypocritical eh?

so here we have:
me: providing some facts about a camera and not bothering about grammar and punctuation
you: talking crap about a camera and bothering yet failing with grammar and punctuation

if you do have a point id love to hear it

No Brilly, not the best I can do at all. But I don't have to resort to overly frustrated commentsto try and make a point (as well as bad grammar). I agree with yourcomments about the sensor size and TBH as a full frame owner I didn't know the sensorson Panasonic compacts were so small (I also have a Sony Nex), however just afraction bigger sensor can have a difference in quality. And you'll knowthat bigger lenses let in more light and have better image quality. However, it's not about that, it's really about making commentsaimed at other users and if anyone need to chill, perhaps you should. It's a camera, don't have a heart attackabout it.

oh please have you heard of paragraphs?!

and ... you still dont have a point... just a feeble failed rescue attempt

as you say, you had no idea about the camera - lets end it there

its not a debate
its a presentation of facts by me
its the talking about stuff you have no clue about by you

a debate implies both sides have some sort of point, not really the case here

please suggest i go out more whilst hypocritically posting your nonsense
Really Brilly? Did your education compell you to write that? Or are you simply trying to validate my comments above. Either way I feel vindicated. Enjoy your weekend and try not to get too upset. Stress is really not good for you and your replies seem to indicate frustration. But then I maybe wrong as I don't know you...
I got lost reading this thread and resulting argument. It was entertaining though.

It had everything, alleged facts, counter facts, anger, petty criticism, spelling, grammar and punctuation rage. Then some sort of backing down, more anger, more rising up and something about a sensor, stress levels and sunshine. It had it all.

What’s this deal about again?

still waiting on your first valid point
you can go on about grammar/punctuation and spelling if you want but as we saw it was hypocritical

in summary:
no alleged facts from me - mine are straight from spec sheets
the 'counter' facts were just made up guesses
when that was found out ... there were hypocritical grammar and personal attacks but no points
so... CALM DOWN TOMBOY
