Standard in any supermarket
Are they not normally around this?
Lately it's difficult to find any less than at least 50p
So 27p is good I think.

Given Tesco have put the price up to 60p+ this is a pretty good price in current times.

Wilko did as well. They were 20p before all this, now 40p
Normally it's 30p in Asda

£1.25 @ Tesco …£1.25 @ Tesco https://www.tesco.com/groceries/en-GB/search?query=paracetamol&icid=tescohp_sws-1_m-sug_in-para_ab-226-b_out-paracetamol

That's 'Paracetemol Plus' which also has caffeine added. Basic Tesco paracetamol isn't £1.25, even at Tesco prices.
Tesco CEO said people are changing their shopping habits only doing one big shop a week instead of 2 or 3 small shops.

I wonder why? This guy is such a Muppet to make such a stupid statement.

(Pssst .. Mr CEO of Tesco .......We only come out if necessary. that's why we do one big shop)

The 'standard' ones are 75p - pre-pandemic, they were 55p - check the comments regarding the price rise.

This pandemic has highlighted that off-shoring isn't always a good thing - we really need to move to a new production model across industries which has a healthy balance of off-shoring as well as UK production.

Though I agree with your point the UK should be producing these basic medications, the whole reason they do not is the fact it costs too much, as identified in the article you linked, further backed up by the fact everyone is moaning in this posting about prices going up from 20p to 40 etc!
I don't mind paying 40 pence, just stating the fact that the price doubled when Covid-19 appeared.
Poundland are back on 3 packs for £1 now
I didn't think you could buy more than 2 packs either, but bought 3 packs in Poundland without any problem.
None in the jungle.....the parrots eat 'em all.
3 for 1 in Poundland

And it's about the worse thing to try to overdose on. You can end up dieing a horrible death several days later as your liver fails.
Always this price

We as consumers are as much to blame as the retailers - our constant drive for lower prices have long term consequences (the loss of industry, manufacturing capacity, knowledge etc) that has been exposed by this pandemic.

This is something retailers were aware of but probably didn't care about but which is probably only now dawning on some consumers - will it change consumer behaviour when things go back to 'normal? Unlikely.

There are examples of companies closing research facilities in the UK theguardian.com/bus…re ( over £100 million spent and was never fully opened and government subsidies taken in doing so) yet the original facility lies largely unused. Astra Zeneca have now opened another facility in Cambridge astrazeneca.com/our…tml . There are other facilities doing research though alderleypark.co.uk . Fingers crossed the country is not being taken for a ride by these shareholder owned companies.

Apparently the law states no more than 100 tablets per transaction, which is about 6 packs or so. The 2 packs limit is only a guideline. I did wonder about Poundland, too, as every other shop sticks to the guideline. Cheapest I ever saw pre-Covid was 15p in Poundstretcher, so 27p now isn't too bad.

Paracetamol used to be made (many years ago) in the North East. The major problem is the pollution caused in the process which creates a deep red aqueous by product. This was destroyed by an expensive process called wet air oxidation. Most production is now in India and China where pollution control is less demanding. The bulk material is then made into tablets and caplets, mainly in India.

I did visit one of these facilities in Goa some years ago which made the paracetamol tablets sold in Sainsburys (I happened to have a pack in my bag at the time...). It was one of the most disgusting facilities that I have seen (there were about 7 people standing around in their "analytical lab" -a joke as not a single piece of antiquated kit was turned on- and I am sure that most were cleaners brought in to make up the numbers) and I threw away the pack that I had with me having been there. I am sure that things have improved since, but I wouldn't bet on it. I was asked to water down my report on the facility....

Sadly there are more factories like that and all in the name of profit for shareholders. I was in China a couple of years back, sourcing wholesale tooling. I was invited to a factory post show and was awestruck to see workers welding on here soil floors in a shabby warehouse (with no time extraction or PPE other than holding a small piece of tinted glass in front of them as they worked). Cables all over the floor being run outside to a Smokey generator. And that was a place they wanted me to visit!
Not a deal normal price, good luck finding any
