phones4u had this on sale for £250 a few days ago... but I missed it. Checked their website today and found this on sale for £279.95. Not as good as £250, but sure better than £300!!

This is on orange pay as you go, but I *think* phones4u sell phones unlocked!

A definite yes, the original desire has a 1ghz CPU, but the desire z only got a 800mhz one.

amazing deal

I have the original Desire but would rather have the Z, probably has better battery life with the speed drop, which probably isn't noticeable in everyday use. Plus the 512mb storage is mostly used by the OS, even when storing apps on the SD card they still take a bit of the internal storage too, so that soon becomes annoying...

Not really, the first Desire has a first generation 65 nm Snapdragon CPU with a weak GPU (Adreno 200). Desire Z has a second generation 45 nm CPU with a much better GPU (Adreno 205). It also has plenty of additional goodies (like native DIVX support, or HSPA+) .

Desire Z and Desire HD have second generation snapdragon CPU. so the 800MHz chip on the desire z performs as good as desire with 1GHz chip, and consumes less power (in theory) as it runs on a lower speed.

good find, but expect to see even better deals if you're lucky.. but then of course you have the quandary of buying old model instead of new one

desire is very well supported by the hacking community so it's very well worth considering as a generic android device instead of the Nexus

It's expected to hit retail on April 18th.
Looking around about £400-430 at launch.

Really?
The Desire is far superior to the Wildfire.

I'd say that this Sony Ericsson X10 Mini Pro for £150 including £20 TopUp is a far better deal than that Wildfire option.

A Wildfire is no way comparable to Desire. Desire is in a top league while wildfire is a below mid level league. For comparison a wildfire is inferior (except for camera) to Orange San Francisco too.

Reading the desire S specs I am shocked to say It will sell above £400 ? Shocking !!! As far as I am concern nothing new and well over priced as you can get desire or DHD for around £300 and below

so how much internet time would you get per month on this deal?

Feel these deals are no good when you can run out of internet time.

To be honest, £290 seems expensive for this type of phone.
You can get a Wildfire for about £140, which i am considering.

What would justify me spending a £150 more on this?

Will this phone have an Orange logo on the case and Orange bloatware installed?

You can actually get this sim free for £312 form Carphone Warehouse which is reasonable. :

Correct, I can confirm that it's been selling for £249.99 instore last week. But I saw this being sold for £229.99 in P4U store Guildford, Surrey high street on Friday. This was for Orange pay-as-you-go upgrade only. And you had to have a Orange SIM for at least 6 months with regular top-ups to get this price.

Spot on with release date - posted link to the new HTC models coming out shortly (with expected prices) in another thread.

The Desire Z has a worse processor and has a (in my opinion) pointless keyboard making it chunkier and less reliable.

Yes they do sell them at £249.99 if you have a PAYG sim.. My m8 purchased one earlier from a P4U store and they did was put the sim in and make a call and then the deal was done and dusted

There should be an "(in my opinion)" after your comment about the processor too.

The MSM7230 in the Desire Z is a lot newer architecture than the old QSD8650 and are very equal in performance really.
The MSM7230 has ADRENO 205 instead of 200 in the Desire Z which means games run smoother on the Desire Z.

And both running stock 2.2 ROM i've seen the Desire average at 1300 and the Desire Z average at around 1500

In my opinion a physical keyboard is so much much useful to have as well as a software one.

i bought one of these, linked one of gmail accounts to the phone

now want to remove the google account but refuses as wants me to factory reset the phone- wtf?

It may be your opinion, but the fact is that the keyboard is the whole point of the Desire Z! I have one and this was the main draw in buying it. I'm not sure how you qualify the keyboard making it less reliable either?

I guess the guy didn't like me
I went there on friday night and the guy said I can only get that kind of price if I buy online with cashback... :'(

I wouldn't pay nearly £300 up front for this when you can get it for only £480 over 2 years which includes minutes, texts and data. These phones are data reliant and you really aren't going to get the best value out of them on PAYG.

if you manage to get it for the price of the other deal posted on here then get a giffgaff sim and buy the £10 goodybag it would work out as the same price over 2 years, just depends if the £10 bag has enough minutes for you
