The Outer Worlds is a new single-player first-person sci-fi RPG from Obsidian Entertainment and Private Division.

Lost in transit while on a colonist ship bound for the furthest edge of the galaxy, you awake decades later only to find yourself in the midst of a deep conspiracy threatening to destroy the Halcyon colony. As you explore the furthest reaches of space and encounter various factions, all vying for power, the character you decide to become will determine how this player-driven story unfolds. In the corporate equation for the colony, you are the unplanned variable.

  • The player-driven story RPG: In keeping with the Obsidian tradition, how you approach The Outer Worlds is up to you. Your choices affect not only the way the story develops; but your character build, companion stories, and end game scenarios.

  • You can be flawed, in a good way: New to The Outer Worlds is the idea of flaws. A compelling hero is made by the flaws they carry with them. While playing The Outer Worlds, the game tracks your experience to find what you aren't particularly good at. Keep getting attacked by Raptidons? Taking the Raptiphobia flaw gives you a debuff when confronting the vicious creatures, but rewards you with an additional character perk immediately. This optional approach to the game helps you build the character you want while exploring Halcyon.

  • Lead your companions: During your journey through the furthest colony, you will meet a host of characters who will want to join your crew. Armed with unique abilities, these companions all have their own missions, motivations, and ideals. It's up to you to help them achieve their goals, or turn them to your own ends.

  • Explore the corporate colony: Halcyon is a colony at the edge of the galaxy owned and operated by a corporate board. They control everything... except for the alien monsters left behind when the terraforming of the colony’s two planets didn’t exactly go according to plan. Find your ship, build your crew, and explore the settlements, space stations, and other intriguing locations throughout Halcyon.

I think you'd be better off getting a game pass trial for a few quid and seeing if you like this first. I've struggled to get into it and I like these sort of games usually.

What did you find you didn't like about it? I'm wondering whether to get it too as I loved new vegas.
I found the same. It seems ok but its missing something. Im halfway through and just cant be bothered playing it anymore where the fallout games i spent more time than i care to remember in.
I got it free with AMD fortunately, glad i didnt pay for it.

It is nowhere near as good as New Vegas. Not a bad game by any means, but it is kind of basic in comparison.

Yea you hit the nail on the head, exactly what went through my mind. I usually love this type of game.

I think its the companions. They all come along quite quickly and they're mostly a bit flat. Nowt wrong with the gameplay but this sort of game needs some deep characters.

Same here, got the gamepass to try it out and whilst the graphics are lovely I'm just not feeling it. Going to start a new play of fallout 3 because that was fantastic.
Odd. I got it and I'm enjoying it. Don't always enjoy RPGs as I find them too long to ever complete.

I'm just struggling to get engaged with it. Can't really put my finger on why exactly, although the setting is leaving me a bit cold, as are the NPC's. Seems to be a bit of a Marmite title, as the comments here bear out. It's by no means bad - far from it - but I think it's well worth a try before buy.
I agree with the comments to try this first because I'm glad I could play it with game pass, I thought it looked exactly my type of game but I couldn't get into it and came to the realisation I was only playing it because of the hype.

I heard so much about this being so much like New Vegas. So since I already sub to PC gamepass I thought might as well give it ago. I also couldn't get into it and I loved New Vegas. But this just didn't grip me at like like New Vegas and the other Fallout games or Elder Scrolls games.
Agree with most peeps above. I've played computer RPGs for decades, by nature they almost always have some problems but the main problem with TOW for me was the immersion (or lack of) - I just didn't really care that much about the companions or NPCs; I much prefer it when the protagonist has full voice acting too such as WItcher and Mass Effect.

Also in TOW I missed out on about a quarter (I think) of the game (several planets I never got to visit) without knowning until near the end due to the way the 'adventure pathing' system works. I thought it was a bug at first until I checked on forums. However I am glad I got to play it through Game Pass Beta - it's not a bad game, I just would have been disappointed if paid full price.
I'm playing that currently on PS4 so I haven't had a luxury of using Xbox pass. I have put in a good few hours into it; only just got the Power Regulator and left the first area (I dont know how far into the game I am). I love RPGs and I am really enjoying this one. It may be because I have been starved for a game like this ( only recently completed RDR2 and God of War) and I don't really have too much time for gaming. I think I paid £30 around Christmas time and I feel I am getting my money's worth; I can easily see myself replaying it with a different built to make different decisions on a second playthrough. I would wholeheartedly recommend it.
