Watch Dogs 2 - Before You Buy

Use hacking as a weapon in the massive & dynamic open world of Watch Dogs 2.

In 2016, ctOS 2.0, an advanced operating system networking city infrastructure, was implemented in several US cities to create a safer, more efficient metropolis.

Play as Marcus Holloway, a brilliant young hacker living in the birthplace of the tech revolution, the San Francisco Bay Area. Team up with Dedsec, a notorious group of hackers, and expose the hidden dangers of ctOS 2.0, which, in the hands of corrupt corporations, is being wrongfully used to monitor and manipulate citizens on a massive scale.

With the power of hacking and Dedsec by your side, launch the Hack of the Century, take down ctOS 2.0 and give freedom back to whom it belongs: the people.

I really wanted to love this game but I found the PC version to be a stuttering mess. Even with an i7 and GTX1080, FPS fluctuates between 40-60 and the constant stutter just ruined it for me.

Had to run the first one at medium textures/shaders just to get above 30 frames. Seemed to be a poorly optimized mess. Looking forward to checking out what sort of improvements and design ideas were implemented in the sequel

That’s disappointing. I’m currently playing through Mafia 3 and I thought that was bad- that’s an ugly unoptimised mess in itself but I’m liking it and looking forward to playing something similar when I’m done.

I’m running an i5, 16gb ram and an 8gb gtx 1070 with ssd so will give this one a miss for now and look for something else.

Any ideas?

Are you looking for historically themed ones specifically or would any sandbox game do?

Anything really - I don’t tend to get on well with the GTA games so wasn’t expecting to like Mafia 3 very much but as I had it with the Humble Bundle I thought I’d give it a blast- while I can tell it’s not the best game in the world, I am enjoying it - it’s therapeutic clearing out the areas and moving to the next. Guess it satisfies with my ocd gene!

Runs well for me, has done since early on so don't know what you are doing. It is very RAM hungry and will utilise a lot of CPU resources, will easily load 4 intel cores to maximum. After v1.09 the performance of the game actually improved as well.

It is very demanding on ultra settings. For just 1080p/60FPS you do need a GTX1080. Fiddling settings is the order of the day for this game with higher resolutions. It even has a temporal reconstruction resolution option used that does a very good job if you want to run higher resolutions with less performance impact.

If you're into the "liberating" locations mechanic, you'll have a blast with Just Cause 3. That franchise has always favored player freedom over narrative.

Another game that features outposts is The Saboteur. This one set during World War II in German-occupied France. It used a terrific mixture of black-and-white graphics and color which I found aesthetically pleasing. A underrated gem.

Anti aliasing is the issue with this game, I can play at solid 30fps with ultra settings with my gtx 970, i5 4670k. But put temperal filtering on and use Post procesding SMAA. Any higher and your fps will tank hard.

Not had any such issues on my Asus G752VS I7-6700HQ 16GB RAM GTX 1070.

There are several extremely high end PC options in this game that are only really suitable for the next generation graphics cards. Nvidia Gameworks so no surprise. The San Francisco fog, screen space reflections, HFTS shadows and TXAA are hugely demanding just using two of them. That is BEFORE you get to the 'extra details' sliding scale option! It's one of the very highest end most demanding PC games around, turning everything on is only an option with a monster machine.

Saying that with all the Gameworks features disabled it still looks great and the temporal filter option gives back a lot of performance. It's also a good game to lock to a frame rate it if is varying too much.
Any sub £20 offer on xbox one?
