Unfortunately this didn't work very well for me at all. Plus it seems to upload it somewhere to convert and downloads again. I'm a little bit suspicious of sending confidential information using apps like these. Just my opinion though.
Doesn't download
If you only need to convert to a basic PDF (not from a PDF) then CutePDF works a treat - basically installs like a virtual printer so you select Print from the menu of whichever program you are in (Word, Excel etc.), select CutePDF as the printer and you have a PDF file ready to save instead of a hard-copy.
Openoffice will print to pdf

Haven’t tried any of the above so can’t comment on how good or bad they are.
It's crud, don't bother with the download
I always like using Cutepdf. Used it since Win XP days. Works/installs like a printer so any app that can print can use it and instead of printing a page it pops a 'Save As' pdf box up.
Been free for ages, and pretty sure it doesn't do anything useful that free software online cant do.

Most modern versions of office from the last 6 years have the same functionality built in to save out as numerous formats including PDF.

Good point but for those people who don't have that feature in office (or don't have office, using Wordpad or similar) then CutePDF is handy I think; and it works with any other program which has a Print option i.e. our bespoke stock control system at work doesn't always export/save reports correctly as PDFs so being able to 'print' to a PDF is very useful.
Microsoft Word will open a pdf and convert to word and vise versa
