TEN, Pearl Jam's debut album, was released less than a month before Nirvana's NEVERMIND, and although it took longer to climb the pop charts it also hung around longer, eventually outselling its Seattle rival. Together, the two albums reinvigorated rock and roll, whose share of the pop marketplace had been slipping through the late 1980s. But while Nirvana's bruising punk rock was an all-out assault on the classic-rock dinosaur, Pearl Jam's accomplished hard rock was an attack from within the system.
The drawn-out, bluesy guitar riffing and anthemic choruses that dominated TEN instantly gave away roots in the same popular hard rock and heavy metal that Nirvana was intent on crushing. Indeed, before forming Pearl Jam, guitarist Stone Gossard and bassist Jeff Ament (who between them wrote most of the music on TEN) were the core of two '70s-influenced metal bands, Green River and Mother Love Bone. But in place of the self-aggrandising, larger-than-life singers that led most such bands, Gossard and Ament found Eddie Vedder, a ravage-voiced vocalist more apt to identify with the abused and misunderstood children he was singing about than with any other rock stars. When he exploded into one of TEN's many memorable choruses, Vedder offered transcendence for the people who needed it most.
The storyline of the album's breakthrough single, "Jeremy", was typically vague and elusive (despite a highly suggestive video), but the message was not. The meek and the misunderstood, Pearl Jam seemed to be saying, would rise and inherit the world, even if it was only a world of their own invention.

You got me interested... was never that keen on the stadium rock bombast of the original mix... wonder what the remix sounds like...

out of stock :-(

What can I add that everyone has already said? Just total class from the first track to the last.

Class album. Great find. *HOT*

Let's hope for music's sake that you don't stop buying music and gigging regularly otherwise there won't be any future classic albums, which would be a shame.

Regardless of this, this is a decent album, I was a guitar teacher in the 90s and have a fondness for music of this era. RATM, Nirvana, Oasis, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, Kyuss, Stone Temple Pilots, Pantera, Foo Fighters, RHCP and others. Oops just realised Oasis were in there, they were anti grunge, I still remember trawling through al their hits though day after day after day.

Extra heat as this awesome album contains "Black" one of the greatest examples of songwriting of all time. Once saw them live and during Black about a hundred grown men were in tears, truly exceptional

brilliant album - £1.99 - nobrainer.... keep checking in case it comes back in stock at this price :-)

Was only trying to make the point i've listen to shed loads of music and not much has come close to the class of this album and i'm not some young muppet who thinks dave grohl is a credible artist and not grave robbing kurt cobain. Seen all those bands live you've mentioned could you say that?

I think the second album Versus [Vs] was just as good (if not very slightly better) - I listened to it more than I did Ten.
Certainly a better 2nd album that Nirvana's 2nd album (well, the one after Nevermind anyway).

The remix sounds less 70's rock & more grunge - check out a review AllMusicTenLegacy

Favourite album. There's some excellent bonus tracks on the 2009 Legacy edition of this. The remixes on the Legacy edition however are poor imo.

Absolute Bargain. Heat added.

Had this on alot in the Gym lately (redux). it never get's old. Vedder has a great set of lungs and Mike McCready's guitar really shreds. Grunge??? There is no such music form it was a name made up by the media. Pearl Jam have always been Classic Rock.

Hot from me
