it always reminds me of going to my great nan's house - she used to wash our faces with this after lunch !

It strangely always reminds me of barley sugar sweets too !

We must all be related.... you all said what I thought...

This is currently 39p a bar in Home Bargains and I thought that was a good buy! Great deal - i love this stuff - HOT from me.

I don't like Pears at all now, they changed the formula a year or so ago and it's nothing like the original. I had to change to Knights Castille. Heat for the price though.

Quite

You are quite right. I bought some a year or two ago from a local discount store and couldn't believe how different it smelt compared to what it did previously, much harsher. Fishing the carton out of the bin I saw that it was "made in India" and presumed it was a grey import licensed product or even fake. But on buying some from Tesco it turns out it is all now imported from India and it is all the same now. It's a shame that it's apparently no longer made in the UK but an even bigger shame that a once great product is apparently being made with inferior ingredients. It used to be one of those really pleasant little things that helped make life "nice" now like so much else it's just mediocre

^ Absolutely ^ A real shame.

Love this soap, when I was on holiday in Egypt last year the local metro was selling pears strawberry soap,I bought loads lol.It was lovely. Will be returning next year and will have to bring home a new stash!!

Pears has been in India since ages, maybe it is being imported from India due to cheap manufacturing cost, otherwise i dont think the formula has been changed since it was invented. Hot for me..8)

It appears you are incorrect, the new formula is completely different to the old, which was apparently completely different to the original. en.wikipedia.org/wik…oap

According to the Wikipedia article and the linked Telegraph article, Unilever pledged last year to change it back closer to the old but I think it still smells and feels sh*te in comparison.

New formula, old formula.. it still stings the eyes out your head like no other soap if you're not careful!!

update the deal to include other similar offers...

I couldn't see this in my local store.

Well it used to be made with only a few ingredients and was sold marked "Hypoallergenic, non-comedogenic" It was gentle and popular with eczema sufferers. Now since the formula has been changed it's made with 24 ingredients and is much harsher and no longer so suitable for sensitive skins.

I didn't know the back-story to this until I read pjk's post and realised it wasn't just me and so I did a bit of research. With all the "artisnal" soap makers out there and the disgruntled Pears soap ex-customers I would have thought someone would be making "genuine fake" all natural formula Pears style soap, maybe someone does but I can't find it

Droyt's make something similar - not a copy though, it's their own recipe. They've been making soap for over a hundred years. Since it's made in the UK (I'm pretty sure that is true) from traditional ingredients it's not cheap. Might be worth looking at though. Their website is Droyt

Do not use this since the formula was changed but a really great price for those that use it. Heat.

Thanks for that, I will give them a try

Even Wrights coal tar soap have changed too (which was good for Psoriasis) as it no longer contains any coal tar. This was due to carcinogenic scaremonging .

If you wanted real coal tar soap now, you would have to look in ethnic markets.
