And Currys AND Dixons.

Original Poster

Yep, Currys Dixons and PC World are all owned by the same company ...

How does this compare to the Canon 450 package that was on here last week? I am looking in terms of value for money and not just technical spec,

I'm a Nikon man myself but the K-x is a cracking camera and this is an excellent deal at that price.

Great camera, but bear in mind that I paid £400 for the camera with 18-55 and 55-300 lenses back in December.

Unless you're looking to buy into Canon I would much rather have this, better specced than the 450d. That said the liveview on this is pretty rubbish unless you're manual focussing, and I wasn't blown away by the movie mode to say the least.

Many thanks for the feedback. My daughter (16) is doing photography at school so needs a dslr with manual functions. The school are vague on specs so I thought this (or the 450D) might be a good entry level option. I would of course also be playing with it so I didn't want any old cheap dslr.

I have the Kx, excellent piece of kit. I have to say the price is not particularly amazing though, considering previous prices, but its still a good deal. As said above, Liveview is not really that great, and no focus points can be seen through viewfinder, but the picture quality is amazing.

I also bought this in December (for £375, http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/pentax-k-x-digital-slr-camera-twin/798039/#post9806837) after much checking around and comparison to equivalently priced entry-level Canon/Nikon/Sony models. Haven't regretted the decision yet and pleased with the pictures.

K-x is an excellent little camera, love mine to bits. Some might find … K-x is an excellent little camera, love mine to bits. Some might find this interesting...http://carlmilleruk.blogspot.com/2011/02/my-pentax-k-x-out-performed-nikons.html

Don't find that interesting or useful at all actually. Just a moronic anecdote without even very much information even for what it is.

Pentax are a fine if you want a cheap SLR.

I know the Canon and Nikon fanboys often look down on it (even in Cambodia the American and Japanese tourists stared at me using one), but this is an excellent beginners SLR with above entry level specs.

I bought this package last year and used it heavily around Malaysia and Cambodia, and it was more than happy when we did some orienteering waist deep in river water. The 50-200 lens is slightly faster I find, and I was glad to get both - the 18-55 is okay, but the camera really needs the additional zoom lense to really shine.

The only thing I am not too blown away is the price - I paid this same price last year at Currys. I would have expected with 14 & 16mp SLRs becoming more common place that the Pentax would have dropped in price a bit - not that I'm complaining, owning one of course!

same deal at dixons.co.uk but with a further 6% off (use code extra6) brings it down to around £405 and possibility of quidco aswell could bring effective price below £400
