Unfortunately true, the only thing they have on them is tank-like build and good ergonomics, but so do pretty much every competitor.
I have to agree with the folks above, I bought a K-70 about a year ago it was on offer and I purchased two Pentax HD DA lenses with it. What drew me to the camera was the weather sealing and durable build however focusing was not as straight forward as I would have hoped in daylight, low light conditions are even worse. I got accustomed to these little niggles and now spot focus then recompose most of the time. I still rate Pentax as a really good brand which provides a lot of "bang for the buck" but there is definitely room for improvement in the AF department.
Pentax are very good for scenery. I used to own K-5ii, 16-50/2.8 and 50-135/2.8. The optics are marvellous, especially for the price. The focusing though is rubbish - slow and unreliable.
Is autofocus as bad on this newer model?

From what I've read, the focusing on KP has been improved. But I think it is a quite subjective thing. Although I rated the focusing on my K-5ii as "bad", I still used it for paid jobs like events and weddings, and got some good results. It is just when compared to the Canon or even Sony gear I own, they are certainly interior by a country mile. You will have to try it out to decide whether it is "acceptable" to you I am afraid. It also depends on which lens you use more. It was more reliable with the 16-50 for me e.g.

I have k-s2 and the focusing is probably about the same as mybold nikon d40 which is some 10 years older. I have played around with some high end nicon/canon and their autofocus was a lot better. Saying that other features are are great and as long as i dont have to try to capture a portrait free hand in the dark i am not complaining too much.
I have been looking at k-70 and kp for a while now
Been gradually dropping in price the last 24hrs, currently sitting at £608.43
£595 now folks.
Down again to £578.91, that's it can't resist any longer in case it shoots back up.

As of 21.00 make that £571.85

I've been watching this fall too! Very, very tempting! Only thing holding me back is I would have preferred the black one! Well that and the vague promise of a new updated K3 this summer.... Decisions....
Edited by: "Mikro" 30th Jan
Ooh the black version has just dropped from £699 to £667.02. I might risk waiting for it to go down to the same price as the silver one...
Price update on silver one - now £557.27...
Is this much different to the K70, or just some obscure new features that I'll probably not use?
Still have my old K-R, but was thinking of updating it to the K70.

Main reason I want to stick to Pentax is my collection of old prime lenses - some wonderful optics in those that would cost of a fortune to replace with Canon/Nikon gear.

Pretty camera though
This is like a Mexican stand off... There are only three in stock, with several people looking closely, fingers twitching...
BigAde, it sits between the K70 and the K-3ii as far as I know, if that helps. I don't know the K-R. I have a K3, skipped the K3ii due to no built-in flash (it's handy for triggering my other flashes!). But it is getting on a bit and I wanted to try out the new 5-axis stabilisation and the fold out screen on the KP. By the way, it has now fallen to £551.37! And rhaegox, where are you seeing the stock levels for the camera on Amazon? Thanks!
From the drop down menu you can only select max 3. Could be just the limit of how many you can purchase at one time, I'm not sure but it's now down to £547.95, no one buy one!!! At this rate it will be around £200 by Xmas!!

The K-70 was around £360 from Black Friday until the first week of January at some sellers, I too was tempted by this but from previous ownership of a K-30 and K-S1 with both suffered the dreaded aperture solenoid failure I decided to pass on it as there are numerous reports on the forums that it has carried over to the K-70. The K-70 has a twisty flip screen where as the KP has flip out screen, the K-70 has a better grip and a few more little bits, on the other hand the KP is a Marmite camera ( love it or hate it for the looks) this also has a better spec than the K-70 but for me the deciding factor was that it uses a different aperture mechanism than the K-70 so no dreaded aperture failure.
Mine arrives tomorrow and I am looking for to trying some old lenses on it to see how it performs. For the current £547 I would pick the KP.
Down a touch more £545.36
Now £545.36! Mad that it keeps dropping, now just over £100 less than what this deal started at 3 days ago!
@rhaegox - Thanks, hadn't thought of trying the dropdown!
@Barso - hope you love it. I still haven't pulled trigger, waiting for the black one to fall too... I'll regret it, they'll both shoot up! ps if your old lenses that you are trying happen to be black, please let me know how they look on the silver, all my pentax lenses are black...

I had solenoid failure on my k-s2. Just need to take it out and sand it down a bit. Takes 10 min and has been working now for 6 months with no issues. Learning how to do it probably took all day though ..
£540.38! Soon be pennies.

Well the silver is now £523 and the black £633......! Mine arrived this morning and as you asked the camera with a black lens looks the bees knees to me and the missus, the same can't be said for the white stormtrooper lens though. I haven't unpacked everything in the box or even turned it on because if the price drops anymore I'll send it back for a refund and order it again at the lower price.39813872-cXcGy.jpg

Barso, that looks good! I'm still going to wait for the black to fall a little more, I think. Some of my "black" lenses are more like a dark grey and won't match the camera at all. I see you have the larger grip on too. Looks great. And it's annoying now that Amazon won't just refund the difference. Has to cost them more going through the rigmarole of returns etc! I think if the black drops to £600 I'll bite! Thanks for the photo. If it drops any more in price I'm going to have to take the silver, be rude not too!

TBH I don't think the silver/black combo looks too bad, it even looks a bit more retro than some other offerings. It came with the smallest grip attached but I changed it to the largest just to hold it, first impressions were very positive, it feels compact compared to my old K10D which took the photo.....oh and here's the "Stormtrooper"39814535-fCtQF.jpg lens

About the price difference, maybe you'll be able sort it out on live chat. Maybe worth doing it now in case start going up again...Beautiful camera btw, with black lenses looks a lot better than silver/white.

Live chat couldn't offer me the difference so I'm returning it tomorrow and going to re-order, hopefully.
It was nice to hold even though it was never turned on.
I'm sticking with my Contax G239815392-zNVAg.jpg
@spatter I have never seen a Contax before, that whole left side is very similar to the KP at first glance!

@Barso I like the stormtrooper, that would be an advantage of the silver, white lens looks better on it than it would on the black version. I'm getting twitchy, not much movement of price today, maybe this is the bottom and they're gonna bounce!! Also, you were lucky to get live chat, I always end up with some scripted chat and then they ring me!

Silver now £516.57
@Barso I know!!! Just noticed that. £516.57. And the black one stuck at £633...
Now £501.98, couldn't resist any longer
I'm holding out for £450!!!!

But the contax is a 35mm film camera...
I'm still waiting for the black one to dip below £600, still stuck at £601.99... It had fallen to £556 in mid January but I missed seeing that!
And the black is now £585.44!! My biting point. But is it still falling?

spatter, yup, saw that it was a film camera. Was just remarking on how similar the shutter button layout and that front vertical dial was to the KP.
@Mikro - Who knows if it will fall anymore, at this rate Amazon will never clear their stocks because people with any sense will return their cameras and buy again at the lower price, it's a faff on but if it saves you a few quid then why not.
I'm deliberating whether or not to actually order again after this mornings little trip down memory lane with my K10D, 10mp CCD with some old and new glass, it still gives great results from the raw files.......hmmmm !
