its a good camera, i already bought two next week

is the 50mm any good?

all camera makers have the 50mm, amazing image quality at low prices.

prime lenses (non zoom) help a lot developing skills, there is a lot more to photography than framing the subject from where you stand.

Pentax has low prices and good gear. the only bad point about it is once you get going there is not much choice to add lenses/flashes.

I'd give up 18-55mm kit lens for the 50mm one any day with any camera, Pentax, Nikon, canon or Sony. if you do want the low end 18-55mm zoom you will easily find one second hand cause is not a keeper.

Great price but god damn it's an ugly camera! Voted hot.

Yep its an ugly pug alright!
Good value for money though, but a bit old hat nowadays!

all i can say is 1.4 50mm lens or just don't bother

I've got one and paid the same back in December. worth every penny imo with lots of functionality, image quality is good enough for anything I'll use it for and plenty of manual and auto lenses are compatible..

reason to get this imo is because its cheap, 50mm is not great as a general purpose lens at all
there is only so much 'ooh this will help me be a better photographer' such a lens will do for indoor shots and eg landscapes
better kit would be a wider one
50mm lens is very cheap itself
quite a few reviews of it saying AF is worthless so careful there too

Seems rather stupid to have a cmos size of 23.5 x 15.6cm (not full frame) as old k mount lenses which this camera can use will produce magnified images of 1.5X

For anyone looking at cameras for the first time, 50mm prime lens means zoomed in and non adjustable. Great to have a 50mm lens for some occasions but not very flexible. Eg you would struggle to take a full bodyshot in most rooms indoors.

Good deal though op

Crime scene or porn?

oh... just like basically every other asp-c camera

with a 1.5 crop factor the lens is actually 75 mm equivalent, you would probably need to buy a wider angled lens to go with it.

Great if you have always wanted a camera with a line of flashing green LEDs on the grip. oO

Yes, at least 35mm, though actually for casual use wider still.

Depends what you want to photograph, but agreed 75mm isn't ideal as a general purpose lens, I'd rather have it with the kit 18-55 - available from some random eBay seller for 250 quid new, in toothpaste white:-

..or same seller has the kit with 18-55, in Scooby metallic blue for 240 quid:-
