    Just an honest warning, from someone that sells tv's for living...Philips tv's are notoriously unreliable and the aftersales service is non existant, check out trustpilot for Philips and you will see what I mean. Pay a little more for an LG or Panasonic, stay away from Sony too, just as bad. Forget alI this 4k and 8k, most content is still 1080 FHD or less and won't change for some time. Upscalling is bullcrap too, if the detail isn't there in the first place, the tv can't invent it. I got sick of customers reporting freezing and various other faults with Philips tvs, only to get a robotic non-helpful reply from Philips. They just don't want to know and will keep on telling you to update the software, even when you have told them several times that you already have. (edited)

    Phillips have always been poor for tvs.. but there is a 5yr warranty with this so 🤷

    Philips’ tv modelling structure is a minefield. Not to mention there’s little info about them anywhere including their own site. Some of their models are unique to certain retailers. 8106 is for Argos and Costco I believe. I’ve got 65” 8507 (ending 7 = 2022, ending 6 = 2021) and it’s a great tv if that’s any help. Number after 8000 is the sub series so I’m guessing 85 is a more refined version of 81, perhaps one that was manufactured later in year 2021. Who knows.

    I’ve got this tv/ a similar Phillips model… and I can honestly say that I’d never go back to a tv that doesn’t have ambilight. Makes watching tv 10x better and always gets people talking when they come round!

    Another vote for Ambilight. Kids love it and makes watching movies in the dark so much better.

    How does this compare with the Hisense TV?

    Haven't tried the Hisense one but I would still purchase the Philips one for the Android OS and Ambilight.

    It shows as having a satellite connection but no mention of Freesat.

    I’ve got a similar to to this and while you can connect it to the sat feed & scan it doesn’t have Freesat unfortunately.

    Does anyone have experience with this TV? Is the OS laggy in any way? I had an Android OS TV a few years ago and it was unusable (2 seconds from button press on the remote to the action happening).

    Hi BigMan.

    I got the 4 sided version of this TV back in 2020 and after using it for a long period of time, it's actually very good. when it's new, it's pretty quick to load things but I am a bit of a power user with some third party apps installed outside of play store and deeper integration with the home screen (VLC from play store, Stube with picture-in-picture support). It's responsive "enough" from my point of view but it did lead me to buy another ambilight TV in 2021. This TV is noticeably faster/more responsive than 2020 version even though the TV we got this time is physically smaller, perhaps a faster processor?

    If you want to see a review I recorded on the 2020 version, please check it out below. its quite (unexpectedly) lengthy and the interface has since been updated slightly but it covers a lot of the positives and negatives.

    I think Costco made a typo. I can’t see any soundbar - also looked up the model number on display specifications (no soundbar )

    Yes states a built in sound bar yet the spec states 20W audio output - which is standard tv speaker level (ie no sound bar).

    Although even without it’s still a good price for a 50” ambilight tv. (edited)

    I’ve just purchased a telly from Costco and it comes with their 5 year warranty. If anyone has had a tv from them before how does the cover work? Do I need to register the tv for it or keep the receipt and call if/when something happens to the telly. Any help would be appreciated, thanks

    From memory with a mattress I had to return, all orders are linked to your costco membership card. If in doubt call your local costco to ask.

    In my experience, I have found LG's and Panasonic's to be very reliable. I still own LG and Panasonic plasma tvs and they are still going strong. Samsung's tv's are also very good too. If you are using a Sky, Virgin media or similar multimedia box then the TV UI isn't really that important. If you can stretch your budget, for picture quality, Oled is worth it.
