Corking deal Edi for anyone that needs an ADSL router, just checked PC World have it for £49.97 so with their 110% price beat could be had for as low as £27.97 from PC World Nearly 50% of the RRP!

Great deal for ADSL users (not me) but voted hot all the same!

Looking around, doesn't seem to support any kind of encryption :-(

Yes it does this kit contains the CGA 5722 Router and SNU 5600 USB dongle, the router of which on Philips website Wireless security WEP or WPA can be setup as follows.....

Seems a great price for ADSL users, but I can't find any reviews for it at all.

Maybe. It's just that currys and dixons both say "no" against 64bit/128bit encryption for this same "starter kit" :?

Oh yep, you know what they and Comet are like for inadequate descriptions!....I think Philips details from their own website should be more reliable!....at least I hope, still can't find any reviews, but seems a great deal for ADSL users, especially using PC World or Currys price beating Amazon.

Anyone knows if dongle is MAC compatible?

This is something I'd like to know too. Just reserved one for pick up at PC World. I've been looking at getting set up with a wireless network for a while. But can't find any word on if this can operate with a Mac. Might just go and get it anyway, I'm sure I'll get my money back on eBay if it doesn't work.

is it an older mac?- most macs have airport built in

voted hot, buit would preferr the 'N' standard, 100 to 108 mb via wireless.

i found this aswell its over £20 cheaper than almost anywhere else well worth it

Try looking at the manual for it see if that helps you

*Edit* checked the product manual, says nothing about setting up on a Mac and states the setup wizard on cd is a pc cd rom, however you can configure the modems features via the IP address, so I would think as long as you at least start off with a static ip you should be able to talk to the router and set it up fine from that.

decent price even if you only used it as a backup!

Thanks cicobuff (cocteau twins fan by anychance?). I think I'll give it a go.

Nope you will need a cable router instead of an ADSL one, and will have to bridge your Virgin Broadband modem through that. These ADSL routers have their own built in modem only for use with ADSL lines BT, TalkTalk, Sky etc etc.

Don't worry about your ignorance we can't all be pc geeks! At least you now know that there are two types and which one to avoid, since Virgin totally monopolised the cable market in this country its quite simple....if you are on Virgin broadband you will need a cable router which you bridge your modem through, if you are not then unless you are one of the rare few that uses satellite internet, you will be using an ADSL line and need a ADSL router/modem

Hopefully those purchasing this the unit will last a long time.... However not purchasing due to having 2 previous Philips branded wireless routers and 3 Wireless USB adaptors dieing on me out of warranty... Will never purchase Philips PC equipment again...

That's why this one is so cheap. Ebuyer are doing a "Plexus" Wireless-N for £35, or £50 with a USB dongle. Likelihood is that as Wireless-N drops into the £30 range, wireless-g will drop below £20 - probably in next few months. This is only really a bargain if you desperately need a new modem/router now.

Nooooooooooooooooooo! Philips are awful when it comes to this "wireless" thing. Had one and promptly returned it for a Belkin. Man at PC World said I wasn't the first to return a Philips Wireless Modem Router. Avoid, avoid, avoid.

Cicobuf,

Thanks for the info. Will look out for a cable router.

Talk Talk offer you the choice of a modem router when taking up their broadband its a little more
expensive than the standard modem.

If you did not get it then you may be able to exchange the modem for a router one or buy one
as you see on offer on hotukdeals.

good luck if you get stuck there are forums all over the net re. pc /broadband setup.
