The Philips Hue range of smart home products is great for converting your traditional lighting set-up into a network of customisable and remotely controlled smart bulbs. Sitting at the heart of this network will be the Philips Hue Bridge.

This smart home hub from Philips enables you to control your lights through either a Philips wireless dimmer switch (available separately) or the Philips Hue light controlling app and your smartphone.

Enhance your home lighting set-up by adding timers and alarms as well as full remote control by connecting the hub to your Wi-Fi system. Whether you’re in the garden, at work or on holiday you’ll be able to turn lights on and off with ease.

The Philips Hue Bridge uses a secure, low power and low bandwidth mesh network called Zigbee to connect all of your Philips Hue smart light bulbs. Zigbee’s network is generated using each bulb to create a consistent mesh network of connectivity which sits separately to your existing Wi-Fi network. Stream films, download files or playing online games without having to worry about your Philips Hue system becoming or bogged down by excessive bandwidth use.

Compatible with Amazon’s Alexa, Apple’s Homekit and Google assistant, this Hub is the gateway into creating your very own smart home system.

Features and BenefitsSecurity – Ideal for keeping intruders away from your home while you're away, switch the lights on using a timer or the remote on/off action controlled through the app.Timers – No more stumbling around in the dark on cold winter mornings, set your lights to come on as you wake up for ease and convenience.Proximity – Create a proximity switch on setting so you’re welcomed home with warm lights as you arrive.Connectivity – Compatible with Alexa, Apple Home kit and Google assistant, this hub is suitable for almost any smartphone giving you and your family full control, even by voice command.SpecificationsPhilips Hue Home Automation Smart Bridge 2.0 (Energy Class A+)Mains poweredCompatible with Alexa, Google Assistant and Apple HomeKitPair with Philips Hue smartphone appCannot be used with conventional dimmersControlled by ZigbeeMaximum number of connected accessories: 10Maximum number of connected bulbs: 50Wi-fi connectivity (via Ethernet cable, supplied)Dimensions: H 9 x W 9 x D 2.6cmWall mountableGuarantee: 2 years

In need of bulbs, bridge and 2 LED strips. Think it's worth buying this and get everything separate? Or wait for BF and get something like a starter kit?

Starter kits works out better in my opinion. Especially if you want the ambience colour bulbs

That's basically what I did, for Hue compatible lights, you can also use IKEA Tradfri or Gledopto (I have both and prefer Gledopto because they have colour available for GU10). I bought my bridge second hand (but unused - probably a spare from someone else's starter kit) and use them with the above bulbs. For the LED strip, Gledopto have decent options as well as TRADFRI but I think they may lack an RGB option.

Edit: that said, the official Hue Bulbs have some more functionality over third party ones, such as being able to be updated, set how it responds to power on (should it go to white/previous colour etc), and easier connection with accessories such as the dimmer (which is currently £9.99 on Amazon)

Do you use the tradfri hub or a Philips hub with your Ikea bulbs?

I originally used the Tradfri hub but it wasn't compatible with my colour bulbs and it was a bit finicky. I now use the Philips hub and it works perfectly (still a bit of a process to get the hub to find all of the bulbs, but that's a one off thing). You can also set the hue dimmer up really easily, or (like me) use the Tradfri remotes but that again is a bit of a process (HifiCentret on YouTube has a good tutorial)

I still have my Tradfri gateway just in case there's a problem I have that would be fixed by connecting the bulbs to that hub and updating the firmware but haven't come across anything yet.

That's also another problem with the Gledopto bulbs, if there are any issues - there currently isn't any way to update the firmware. But haven't come into any issues with those bulbs and also their customer service is excellent.

Much cheaper than Philips bulbs and starter kits aren't they

The starter kit for the Philips Hue with 3 colour GU10s, a bridge and a switch has been down to £90 a few times so the given the price of the bridge here is £24.99 and the switch is £9.99, each bulb works out to be ~£18.33 in that case.

The Tradfri white spectrum is only £12 (although you don't get colour), and the Gledopto is about £15-£16 (though it's from China, also sometimes they are less with coupons etc). It's really a game of trade-offs.

Personally, after buying the Gledopto ones I prefer them and have actually bought 6 more of them as well as a light strip about a week ago (11.11 sales for about £12 per bulb after coupons, £20 for 2m USB RGB light strip) and it's basically the cheapest way if you ever extend your setup at any point in the future.

Spot on mate. Only thing that worry's me a little is the reliability
Dont forget if you have an echo plus, you dont need a bridge to operate the Philip's hue bulbs, mine work fine without one.
