Tempted - was looking at a standalone Hue lamp and considering the Iris, but this being portable and unobtrusive is clinching it for me.

This needs a Hue hub right?
Does anybody have one of these? How do they compare to the iris?

No there also bluetooth, so its either the hue bluetooth app ,or connect to a hue hub.
Cheers bought 3 for £53.99 ea, using 3 accounts, top up each one with £53.99 and get on chat and say you haven't had your £6 for a £50 topup, if they ask for a link then it was the one you clicked on, on the amazon page.
Anyone know if these Hue bulbs in general can be controlled away from home using a mobile phone and google home or Amazon Alexa App without the Hue Hub?

Really appreciate your help. Deciding to choose between the 2 big companies and controlling lights away from home without the Philips Hub is major reason I am interested.

Dad lives on his own in a rough area and I was setting up some cameras for him and he asked me to get him some lights too.

No i am pretty sure you need the hub to be able to control them as i believe that is the link between the phone wifi and the lights but happy to be proved wrong.

To be honest you can pick up a hub very cheap on ebay

I found out it should be possible after recent updates. Hopefully it is true:

I am guessing the smart assistant enabled speaker (mini or echo) acts as the hub. I just need to clarify if the device has to be in the same room as the light bulb or not...

Bought this bundle but can’t find a way of pairing the dimmer switch with the lamp... what’s the point of selling these together if you need a hub?!
