These are just extensions to the 2m lightstrip - they cannot be used on their own. Still good value though - if you have the standard kit first.

If I was to buy 5 and use 2 metres in one place and 3 in another would I need 2 bases?

Yes, assuming they'd be too far apart to run link cables. If they're reasonably close or in the same room, you can join them with extension cables.

I have some hue strip to ethernet adapters, not sure the maximum practical length. Because they are probably 5v and very low current I'd expect quite a distance given that Power over Ethernet has no issues upto 100m.

They're 24v, but yes, ethernet will carry it a good distance should you need to or are able to run/hide a cable. Handy in kitchens where the wall units are not all interconnected.
Ordered 3. Thanks OP! Heat!

So even though I have existing Hue kit, I can't just use this as it is and would need something else?

If you already have a 2m lightstrip, these attach to it and extend it by 1m. You can extend up to 6m in total. They won't work with any other Hue product other than the 2m lightstrip.

Litecessory on Amazon are the ones I've used. They do extensions up to 3m, or ethernet adapters if you need longer runs.
They say a max of 10m (lightstrips and extension cables combined) - I've not tested past this.

Not cheap, but depending on your skills you can make your own.

You'll need the LED strip base kit too if you don't have one already — this listing is just the LEDs and not the controller.
OOS

EDIT: Still in stock via the amazon link in OPs post!

Ordered 6 from amazon... I've got 3m (2+1) kits that I got last year from amazon es for about €50 each still sitting on the shelf. This will be a nice edition.
Plan to use them all when we redo the kids room and when I build my garden den in summer.
