Yes. The number shows the length in mm. If you're looking for 'number 1', 'number 2' etc then just multiply by 3. Number 2 is 6mm for example.

I found this to be the best product of its kind for home use. It has a li-ion rechargable battery so does not have the problem of batteries dying out as has happened to my other clippers.

Also its thumb dial for length of cut does away with having to look around for those different sized cutting combs which have been mislaid.

It pays for itself in no time. Bargain.
Nice deal

Genuine question: What is a "thumb dial for length"??

You adjust the length of the blades using the dial

I have the 9000 version of these and they're fantastic, imagine these are great too.

With the thumb dial you insert the universal comb and you can adjust the length of cut without removing the comb. This does away with the different sized combs 1, 2, 3 etc. So you can easily have a number 2 for top and 1s for back and sides without swapping. And as you dont need to remove the comb from the unit you dont lose it, like I have done for my 2 previous clippers.

Are these any good for beards?
I've had the HC5450/83 for over a year and it was pretty decent for about 9 months and then it wasn't.

Thankfully, Phillips customer service is top notch and received a replacement within a week of contacting them.

Are these any good for beards?

I have one and cheekily use for my beard since I sold my last trimmer. been using it this for 4 months, I know it isn't made for beards but I have had no problems with it at all
Replaced a cheaper unit with this. I'd say this was twice as good.

One question do the blades need oiling on these?

As per Philips description, the blades never need oiling.

The specs look very good however it it does not have a thumb dial so you have to keep swapping the different sized cutting combs.

The problem I had was that I kept losing/mislaying them so never had the right sized ones to hand whenever it was needed. You may be better organised than me and this may suit your needs.
I just picked this up today and there doesn’t appear to be a storage box with it like you see advertised on various sites online, can anyone else confirm?

I ordered this model (not yet arrived) as the reviews are great and I like that its waterproof. Also it has '0.5mm' increments fo beard trimming which i preferred to the 1mm on the philips

I was torn between both products as the philips has no need for attachments, but the hattaker seemed a better beard trimming option
This is a discontinued model but I can confirm I bought one of the 5400 series a month or so ago to replace another Philips that was several years old and it is superb. I don't use it on anything other than 0 but it cuts like a hot knife through butter - I have thick afro hair and the old one used to struggle sometimes when it hot long, this one had no such trouble. Recommended.

The reason i keep getting this Phillips or versions of is the titanium blades (self sharpening)

* "The advanced Titanium blades are harder than steel for ultimate durability. In addition, the blades are self-sharpening to ensure long-lasting performance and accurate cutting, time after time."

They don't go blunt very easily last a long time. Other ones might be ok for a bit then cutting degrades.
So i wouldn't go for that amazon one also you can be more sure with Phillips i.e. customer care and durability.

I'm sure cutting performance wont be near compared but that is up to you depending on what you want most from a trimmer.
Also shorter charge Phillips 60 mins/ 90
Longer usage Phillips 90 mins/ 60.

Ive used it without the comb - just the bare blade then finished it off with my shaver to go completely bald. so it is possible.

I have thick black hair and it has no problem cutting my hair. Maybe your hair is like chicken wire.

If you had said you own the product to start with then perhaps I and others would not be so dismissive of your remarks, as your experience differs from mine. Without that information your comments do come across as ill-informed and unsubstantiated to others who own the product.
