You still must have your PC to be switched on with this one. as it is not a standalone VoIP unit.

from the look of the reviews on amazon, you have to unplug the phone from the bt socket and plug it in to the computer to use voip,:? still a good deal though

I'm considering this as standalone usnit for PC :santa:

I'm looking for one with an answer machine though for this kind of price and quality if anyone knows of any?

In this case why don't you just buy ATA and use your existing phones for both VoIP and landline? No need for PC to be switched on then and no new handsets

Thanks for this. I just scraped in as it said 1 in stock on Amazon! Just ordered

Steve

bigpockets had them at this price a couple of months ago, they may still stock them?

Got excited when I saw this on the front page, thought it was an ATA setup, clearly not

Damn, looks like I need to spend £30 on an ATA device to connect to my router..................

help, what's an ATA ?

Am I missing out ?

ATA stands for Analogue Telephone Adaptor. This is networking standalone device, such as ]this one. It may come in various forms, for example it may have one incoming landline port, one Ethernet (network) port and outgoing phone port. In this case you can receive and make calls via both landline and VoIP using the same handset without PC being involved. Most ATAs are using SIP protocol. You can use it with low cost providers such as Voipfone or Voipcheap.
Normally it should be connected to your router but some routers already got this functionality built in.
It also requires you to have basic networking skills to be able to configure it properly.

Hope that answers your question

many thanks - have sore head now lol
Don't think I need one though

Theres a nice simple solution to take advantage of VOIP if you were thinking of upgrading your wired/wireless router (or if you want less boxes cluttering things)

If you have a BT line look for a ADSL VOIP router such as ]here

If you have a cable connection (Telewest/NTL) look ]here

Point being you can use your bog standard normal phone or DECT cordless phone connecting directly to your VOIP all-in-one router for cheap calls without your pc having to be on.

Does anyone knows ,Is it possible to make skype to skype(pc to pc) calls with this phone

Thanks

Thanks for the info guys Very useful :santa: Welcome to HotUKDeals by the way sideysid and mrsangry :santa:

Or cheaper alternative: Zoom 5567 for cable and Zoom x5v for ADSL.

A lot of the time this can be down to if you use a router for your internet connection, and also the speed of your broadband.

If you are using a router, t's worth setting up port forwarding for Skype - deffinately will make a difference.

OK will do thanks. Its a Linksys DSL on a 4Mb line FWIW.

Steve just looked on Skype's site and can't find which ports I need to forward - any idea?

Look here and here

Steve can you confirm that, because in review on amazon it is said

"The only downside i can see is the inability to start a skype to skype call from the handset, although you can start skypeout calls easily from it"

Do they mean you can start it from PC and then continue talking?

Kommunist Thanks for that - oddly when I searched on "port forwarding" it didn't turn anything up. The Mac pages don't have the same info as the Windows ones so the link is useful.

Skype are also doing unlimited free calls to UK landlines for the next 6 months for those interested...

I have not recieved my phone yet from Amazon so have not tried skype to skype on it yet, however i've been informed from friends that it does work fine? So i'll have to wait and see.

I'll take a look at that - sounds interesting Thanks

Take a look at www.freecall.com and www.voipcheap.co.uk for some free call deals. Both seem to be by the same company, i've used the free options on Freecall and it's pretty good - I tried UK and USA landline numbers and they worked perfect with no costs, worth a download anyway,

Steve

Try Voipcheap.com - you'll get free UK calls as well
And yes, all these are run by the same company: Betamax. Expect zero customer service though.

Been using voipstunt and voipcheap exactly same company since march,No problems sound quality excellent i can ring my brother in france for free on a landline or 10p a minute to his french mobile,If i ring his uk mobile over there it costs him 80p a minute plus what it costs me.

The Betamax (VoipCheap etc) sites haven't given out incoming numbers since June, if this concerns you. (I have no telewest landline, only broadband)

So Sipgate are a good option if this is an issue or Vonage, but they charge a £7.99p/m fee. Also you can get to choose a local number which is handy. If you have 2 VOIP ports you can then use VOIPCheap etc for outgoing calls.

I am using Voipcheap.com for outgoing and Sipgate for incoming calls. My ATA (Zoom 5801) allows upto 4 accounts to be configured. As an alternative, try Voipfone - UK company, good support but they charge 1.99/month for geographical number. The 0560 or 0870 numbers are free.

Interesting - I have Telewest broadband and wonder whether upping from 4Mb to 10Mb would allow me to drop the landline. How long have you run without a landline, any problems?

Tenex i have 4mb on telewest with myself and my two lads using 3 pcs on it and never had a problem on voipstunt or voipcheap so no need for 10mb.
