Always spelt it as brut, I think you might be looking at the wrong deal maybe?

It’s that time of year. Christmas lights and Jingle Bells, days that never get light, Heston’s hidden orange puddings piled up everywhere and supermarkets selling £10 bottles of champagne.

Ten pound bottles of champagne! These seasonal offers are so established and so ubiquitous that it is easy to become blasé, but that really is extraordinarily cheap.

A kilo of champagne grapes costs about €5.60 (£4.70). Excise duty on a bottle of sparkling wine is £2.56. So if we add the duty to the cost of the raw ingredient and throw in the VAT on those two items alone we’re up to £8.71 before we’ve even made it, let alone bought a bottle to put it in or paid for any of the costs involved in shipping, warehousing, distribution…

This helps explain why, when I once asked Asda’s Philippa Carr if it was ever possible to make a profit on a £10 bottle of champagne, she laughed and said, “I can’t possibly tell you that.”

And yet Asda is selling one this year again – Pierre Darcy Champagne Brut NV (normal price £24.25) is down at £10.

I'm not asking why the bottle has gone down to a tenner, I'm asking when I wrote 'champange bruth' completely irrelevant to what we are talking about. I think you might be drunk or something.
