A spellbinding epic tale of ambition, anarchy, and absolute power set against the sprawling medieval canvas of twelfth-century England, this is Ken Follett's classic historical masterpiece.

The Pillars of the Earth tells the story of Philip, prior of Kingsbridge, a devout and resourceful monk driven to build the greatest Gothic cathedral the world has known . . . of Tom, the mason who becomes his architect – a man divided in his soul . . . of the beautiful, elusive Lady Aliena, haunted by a secret shame . . . and of a struggle between good and evil that will turn church against state, and brother against brother.

Loved this! Long ass book, so one to read when you have some spare time but it’s definitely worth it. Just waiting to start the most recent in the series!

I really enjoyed the first series (although i have never read the book), the squeal didn't hit the mark for me anyway.
The TV series was very good, with a great cast. It missed out some chunks from the book (understandable as the book is around 1200 pages long) but told the story well. The second 'series' covered the second book, whose name escapes me at the moment, which is set many years later than the events in book 1. I bought a DVD box set some years ago that had both progs on it, I haven't got round to watching the second one yet as I wanted to read the book first.
