Ping! is an instant messenger exclusively for iPhone users

Ping! is a instant messaging client for the iPhone that looks and feels like the built in iPhone SMS client. It aims to provide free iPhone to iPhone (and iPod touch on wifi) messaging.

Once youve download the (currently free) app and selected a username, you can invite/find friends and family you know own an iPhone or iPod touch, and youre ready to go.

Once youve started a conversation, the application works just like the SMS client except its free, instant and works internationally at no extra cost (aside from your international roaming costs that is). Whenever you receive a message youll receive a push notification and you can respond just as you would with SMS.

Get this quick, a similar app called Whatsapp was free and now charging 59p

seems ok, tried it for a bit, its free, so you might as well get it now try it before they put a price on it

It's very easy to use and works very well, even with GPRS reception.

You create an account which takes about 5 seconds (literally) and then you message your friends/family on their accounts. Account names can be shared instantly via an automated mail that gets sent when you press a button.

The best part is that you can link each username to the contact on your phone with one button. This means it no longer displays the username but the actual contacts name and puts the contact picture next to each conversation.

It's a great way to save messages, especially as the 500 texts you get as standard are pitiful!

Why not just use some form of messenger where you can talk to everyone and not just people on ping?

I installed it yesterday. It seems to work really well.

Why not just use some form of messenger where you can talk to everyone … Why not just use some form of messenger where you can talk to everyone and not just people on ping?

If it existed, people would.

One of the main reasons why ping exists is to provide a free SMS service as the standard iphone tariffs are very poor for txt messages.

It does exist in the form of palringo, ebuddy, AIM and loads others which are also free, All of which have push for when you've exited the app. I use beejive, although not free I find it to be the best messenger app. What's the difference with ping and these if both have push notifications? other than messenger can send messages to everyone who has a form of messenger account and ping is limited to ping accounts?
Just trying to work out what it's good for that's all, will give it a download tonight. =]

Same interface as txt messaging. No account needed therefore no login needed. Uses your contact info from your phone.

It's text messaging for free.
