Pioneer DEH-X8500 DAB car stereo £164.99 (was £339.99) at Halfords online and in-store

I thought this was a great deal for a quality DAB car stereo. Halfords will price match this and also will price match with their online price if it's more expensive in-store.

Came in second in an Auto Express 2013 group test.

Amazon more expensive (how shocked I wasn't) at £189.

Hope I make it past my 25th deal this time as I've been prevented from doing so so far.

Sounds like a workaround I will admit I have no idea what DIN even is....yes link to that Not The 9 O'clock News sketch if you must, I just love the flashy display. The only thing that might be off-putting is that so far from looking, the USB ports both seem to be on the back. I'm updating my playlist all the time on my USB stick so that would be awkward.

Both my Pioneer headunits came with a usb extender cable that you have to feed through the glove box or the passenger foot well. I prefer this than having it on the face of the unit as it looks much cleaner than having a wire stick out from the dash.

Can be purchased all over the place for £165 at normal price, so that part is no kind of deal at all. With 10% code you will save the £16.50 though....

Should also mention that if the rotary dial is the same as the 6400 model it is poorly made and will break really easily....

What DAB aerial did you fit?

Before I bought this I read some alarming comments (german amazon) that the DAB amplifier in the stereo saps battery power even when your car is not being used, i.e ignition off.
I thought that sounded like a load of dodo, to me if you switch off the ignition how would the stereo still use battery power?!

Well 6 months from fitting, my battery was dead, a battery that was barely a year old.
During the 6 months I noticed the aerial fitted to my windscreen was warm to the touch, even on a cold frosty morning. Also there would be no frost surrounding the aerial, which I assume is due to the heat it was producing.

There appears to be a major design flaw with these units. As soon as I fitted my new battery, the Pioneer was removed immediately.
So be warned.

My radio went back to shop for the 3rd time. Never ending problems with DAB. Latest problem was message on screen "ANTENNA ERROR". When chat to pioneer support, they said the only way to repair it is to exchange the unit (well known problem to them it seems).

Another fault is Android device support. There isn't any possible way to connect android device to this radio - tried with several phones and apps.

On plus side - the sound is incredible!

I just hope that the shop will refund my money so I can buy something else, preferably faultless

I have this unit and it locks onto the DAB signals without any problems.

I use a Autoleads DAB / FM splitter with it.

I bought this for £84.99 back in Jan 2013

Just google it, eg similar price at Car Sounds & Security. The RRP on the Halfords site is hugely inflated compared to real world prices as per usual! Extra 10% code potentially makes it worthwhile but some dubious feedback for this product has put me off, I may just add a DAB unit to my Becker.

I have the DEH-X8500 DAB and it connects to my S3 with no issues at all, streaming di.fm trance via shoutcast/bluetooth on my 3 all-you-can-eat contract is super sexy

My point was more to post it rather than just talk about it. If everyone on here just said "it's cheaper elsewhere" to every other deal the site would close in a week.

Sorry but this stereo has been the same price at Halfords for about a month and it's available on ebay brand new for a similar price, with the 10% off it probably is the cheapest available, but without it the price is nothing special, good head unit though!!

Not quite what I said! Enjoy the unit and thank you for posting.

That wasn't directed at you it was at all those who just comment "cheaper everywhere else" without actually posting a deal.

I hope that was a joke. I was at Tesco once and they had a cheapo stereo system blaring out some music. The speakers were distorting and I just had to turn it down. Music is an art and playing it over distorting speakers should be a crime! Long story short, I got told off by the security guard who threatened to call the police. I told him to go ahead and strangely he backed off and didn't turn up the music! lol

I bought this stereo a couple months ago. Great bit of kit! Replaced my jvc double din and the quality is so much better! Doesn't drain my battery as someone said?! My dab signal isn't great, I've got a separate ken wood aerial. Connects fine to my iphone 5 through cable or Bluetooth and the parrot phone system is brilliant!

I did however only pay £140 for it from halfords, they price matched Argos for me

If you want a clear, consistent DAB signal, fit an external aerial. If you have a vague idea what you're doing, a roof aerial is ideal as it will give you the best reception.

Roof aerials at DabOnWheels - I use the Hirschmann Auta 16V DAB aerial, and have excellent reception.

I have a JVC DAB stereo (previously a high end Pioneer FM unit). The price is good, the sound is good, and the competitors, including these Pioneer units, look like a child's transformer toy - not something I wanted in the middle of my car...

Each to their own, but you're still far better off spending less on the stereo and putting the money into a good roof mount aerial.

Amazing how many people don't understand this concept of battery drain from the radio.

The car radio has 2 power connections, 1 direct supply from the radio that all the power is drawn from and 1 switched supply whose job is to tell the radio when the ignition is on.

Just because the radio appears to be off doesn't mean that some circuitry is still running. Faulty stereos are the most common cause of battery drain when the car is off.

I purchased and installed one of these last month and been very pleased with it so far. My car sits idol for sometimes nearly a week and I know the battery isnt new at all and had no trouble but will check the temp of the aerial unit from now on! I am using an autoleads windscreen DAB aerial (luckily after returning a faulty Alpine Media Head unit I opted to upgrade to this £169.99 at the time but halfords did a bit of a deal and threw in the £20 aerial!) and its worked a treat only a few times it has been interrupted hardly noticed.

The only thing I would say against it is the lights are bright (you do get used to it but in my civic the head unit it very high up on the dash) and from what I can see there is no way of dimming them (anyone know?), prefer white too as the other colours just clash.

I havent worked out yet how to save DAB stations though if anyone else has?

I am yet to try the usb connection but looking forward to trying it as I have routed the cable to the glove box, very handy and neat! Oh and don't forget there is a handy SD slot too if you'd rather keep the usb cable free for iphone/charging.

Overall from what I have seen you cant get a mucher better all round unit for the price at the moment!

Argos aren't selling this.

I bought a similar model to this last year. It's DAB signal rarely breaks up and the sound is good! Bluetooth , iPod jack & USB all work fine. Only drawback I can say is the now playing function doesn't work! Hot.

It doesn't play anything? I'd say that's a bit of a drawback.

how do i install this Autoleads DAB / FM splitter with it.

does this work with the existing screen dab ariel?

Yes, that is the one I use and it works fine for me.

The blue wire is for the providing power to the splitter.. read the instructions as it needs to be connected to the blue wire from the unit.
