the HTP-072 gets off to a flying start. The main advantage to using a separate AV receiver is that the slightly larger size allows for a larger power supply and, hence, effortless power. With 100 watts per channel, the supplied VSX324 AV receiver will keep going where most one-box AV systems run out of steam. With action films there's explosive sound and thumping bass available at the crank of the volume control. Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD and Pro Logic II decoders are all provided to get the best from DVD and TV sources. Added to this you'll find ten surround modes plus one designed specifically for use with headphones. Pioneer has also fitted the HTP072 with their Front Stage Surround Advance system. Simply place all the speakers by the TV, and let the Pioneer do the rest. Better still, Pioneer's Advanced Sound Retriever system enhances the typically compressed music from MP3/AAC systems and returns the sound to CD quality.

New to this year's model is a front-mounted USB socket and 4K pass-through. Compatible with the Apple iPhone 5, iPad Mini and most older iPods and iPhones, the USB socket lets you seamlessly play your stored music library and streamed music stations. Furthermore, control, device charging and on-screen album art display are all supported. With 4K screens beginning to make more of an appearance this year, by equipping this Pioneer AV receiver with 4K pass-through sockets, Pioneer have ensured the HTP072 is equipped for the future.

SPEAKERS

At both front and rear the Pioneer HTP072 uses cute and compact, cube speakers. For such small speakers, these give a surprisingly spacious and dynamic sound quality. Being so compact they can easily be positioned on bookcases, mantelpieces or even discreetly mounted on the wall. The front speakers are shielded so they won't affect any stored data or CRT screens close by. The centre speaker is acoustically matched to the other satellites but features a longer casing for a broader, more even spread of dialogue. Together, the sound stage produced by the satellite speakers is enveloping and fulsome.

THE BOTTOM END

To add some heft to proceedings, the Pioneer HTP072 comes complete with a powerful subwoofer. With 100 watts to play with and a generous woofer cone, the system subwoofer drives soundtracks along with real conviction.

BETTER CONNECTED THAN MOST ONE-BOX AV SYSTEMS

In terms of sockets, the Pioneer HTP072 has everything you need for a comprehensive home cinema system. Four HDMI sockets let you loop through HD sources and are particularly useful if your TV has only one HDMI input. Added to this you'll find a wide collection of audio, video composite and digital connections.

With one-box convenience and genuine separates sound quality, the Pioneer HTP-072 offers the complete solution to your home cinema sound.

Great post. Heat added

Good price. I'm no expert. But it doesn't say it's 3D? It's also a passive sub. Is this an issue?

Cannot do 3D pass through

I got this as a replacement great sound quality but the amp is huge.

Why does this deal have a title of:

"PIONEER HTP-072 5.1 HDMI 3D AV Receiver with 4K Pass Through + Speaker Package with HD Audio £199.95 @ richerSOUNDS"

when on the RS spec page it says that it is NOT able to passthrough 3D ?...

I have to laugh at the tax comments on deals like this as well as some other companies, Starbucks to name but one. We all know that these people are on their moral high horse but, when push comes to shove, if it's something they're buying as opposed to voting on and it's a fiver cheaper on Amazon, Amazon is where it will be bought!!! There's NO doubt about that, yet these people argue that they'd pay more to a company that pays tax. If that were the case, why not buy the cheaper product and give the difference to a charity?

No. With the receiver having a quoted 100w per channel, the sub will not need it's own power.

Yeah but it's the SAME price on Amazon.

This looks great for the price but it doesn't look like it is 3D so should be removed from the title.

I haven't got 3D so cant comment on this however it does say 3D READY.

Wait I have to plug in a composite video cable in order to see the OSD of the unit? I'd rather have an up to date amp like the Onkyo...

I suggest worth adding their cheap 5 year warranty for this. 4K rollout broadcast bandwidth investment costs vs appreciable picture quality difference at typical home viewing distances could mean that still is not in mainstream demand by then. If so 4K may not have yet reached lower end amps, meaning they'd have to offer a decent replacement on a like-for-like basis if this breaks and is not economically repairable. At this price I assume the model is being superseded so there is a realistic chance part non-availability forces that scenario

tin

Yeah but it's the SAME price on Amazon.

Sold on amazon by Richer Sounds.

What a silly comment!? In 5 years time there will be something different and 4k will be old technology or cheapest sets. However for £20 still worth a punt

I bought this yesterday alongside a 3D TV and a 3D blu-ray player from Richer Sounds and this was the set up the man in the shop recommended. The TV is full 3D and the blu-ray player is 3D so am I going to have any problems with it if the amp is only 3D ready? I haven't removed it from the box yet so should be able to change it. What is the actual difference between 3D and 3D ready? Thanks.

tin

Yeah but it's the SAME price on Amazon.

But you can use Flubit to get it cheaper, or use any TCB credit you have to get Amazon vouchers at a 5% discount.. that being said, there's less of a case for this product but the point is still valid - it's extremely unlikely that many people think about how much tax a company pays, or avoids, when deciding from whom to buy a product.

would suggest 3d ready means exactly that, on pioneer site it has 4k pass-through so no problems there either.

the title of the product from pioneer is:
"5.1 HDMI 3D AV Receiver with 4K Pass Through + Speaker Package with HD Audio"
pioneer.eu/eur…tml

I nearly went for this before I realised it didn't have a line level subwoofer out (this limits you to passive subwoofers).

If the guy recommended it then it must be 3D.

garybb

If the guy recommended it then it must be 3D.

Well, if he recommended it, it should be 3D - no guarantee he knew what he was doing!

Anyway, for all those unsure, page 12 of the manual states "this receiver supports the functions described below through HDMI connection.... 3D signal transfer ......"

Because if amazon lose enough business this way it may make sense for them to pay tax again. It's not so much about the individual loss of sale but if enough people took this stance it would force amazon to change.

You'd be surprised...

Only thing that puts me off is the wires, the girlfriend wouldn't be happy!

Can they be discretely put around the room? Are they the typical thin speaker cables?

Or could I get a good sound bar for this price and avoid the wires issue!

The man in Richer Sounds where I bought mine said that the bars are not as good as the speakers which is why I chose the speakers. It would be good to hear from someone that has had experience of both though.

I can't imagine a sound bar will ever be able to give the full room spread of sound simply due to how close the little speakers will be. A sound bar is of course an excellent upgrade from the tiny little speakers that are in most LCD/plasma TV's however.

Having recently auditioned a few, you will not get a good sound bar at this price. They sound terrible, until you get to the £300 mark where some of them start to sound reasonable.

The thing that scares me is that they get good reviews on consumer sites, including RS, presumably by people who are blown away by the improvement over their TV sound.

That said, I dunno what the speaker package with this deal sounds like, I'm just guessing they wont be as bad as the soundbars.

PS I'm not any kind of audiophile BTW

Having a line level subwoofer output would enable you to upgrade to a better sub in the future if you didn't like the one supplied with it. I have a nice set of Yamaha speakers with an active sub but the sub isn't brilliant compared to my Panasonic system - being able to chop and change is a bonus.

On a plus side, having an amplified sub output means you can use passive subs without worrying about an external amplifier for the sub.

Swings and roundabouts really but good to keep your options open

It's another Richer Sounds bargain....buy it....it's a steal.

I have the same set of speakers matched with my vsx 919ah and I can confirmbthat sub is not passive. Speaker sound quality is ok and that is just ok. At low levels they dont perform well but around -5 to 10db they are pretty good. I would probably only rate the sub and the amp from this kit. satellite speakers are just ok.

if you look at he speaker system alone it says active sub.

but just to confirm, sub has a plug on it yes koalauk?

brendinho

great!! time to become an audiophile!!

I don't really think you'll get top end sound for the price of a middling PAIR of speakers but it'll be grand for films and games probably.
