Cracking piece of kit and a very good price at £159.

Featuring improved connectivity, new Direct Energy amplification and class-leading networking, the Pioneer VSX527 is an impressive AV receiver.

PUTTING SOUND QUALITY FIRST

At the heart of the Pioneer VSX-527 is a Direct Energy amplifier. Direct Energy amps use short signal paths throughout for purer and more dynamic sound quality. With a Texas Instruments Aureus Digital Signal Processor at its heart, the VSX-527 offers powerful processing and includes both Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio.

FULLY COMPREHENSIVE NETWORKING

The VSX527 comes with a LAN connection for integration with your home network. There's also Apple AirPlay compatibility and DLNA streaming. Apple's AirPlay lets you wirelessly stream music from any compatible Apple device - without the need for a separate home hub. DLNA streaming gets you access to music stored on your PC, laptop or NAS and plays it through the receiver. There's also access to Internet radio and music services, making the VSX-527 a fully comprehensive streamer.

IMPROVED CONTROL

In addition to offering multiple networking possibilities, the VSX527 keeps control better than ever. ControlApp lets you control all important receiver functions from your smartphone or tablet. Control playback, select an input, adjust listening modes, change sound balance and select Internet radio and DLNA streaming content from one app. The Pioneer VSX527 is also compatible with Air Jam. Air Jam is a Bluetooth-based app that lets a group of people connect with their iPhones, iPod Touch or iPads and add their songs to the receiver playlist. In effect it's a local, social network for music and works well with the VSX-527 (optional AS-BT200 Bluetooth adaptor required).

ENHANCED CONNECTIVITY

When it comes to connecting more conventionally, the Pioneer VSX-527 has got more connections than ever before. There are no fewer than six HDMI inputs for full compatibility with your complete system. They're also compatible with 3D and ARC (Audio Return Channel) for a less cluttered cable connection. Also standard is an iPod Digital USB connection. This allows plug-and-play flexibility without the need for a further docking station. The sound quality will be better than many docks, too, as you're using the processing power of the Pioneer rather than the docks. Better still, Pioneer's Advanced Sound Retriever system enhances the typically compressed music from MP3/AAC systems and returns the sound to CD quality.

EASY TO SET-UP

Although comprehensively equipped, the Pioneer VSX527 is by no means intimidating to use. Pioneer's unique MCACC (Multi-Channel Acoustic Calibration) system will tune the amplifier to the size of listening room and speaker placement, at the touch of a button. Professional results no longer rely upon hours spent with a sound level meter and heavy study of the instruction manual! Finally, if you like the idea of high quality cinema sound, but simply don't have space for all the speakers around the room, then you'll be delighted to see Pioneer have fitted their Front Stage Surround Advance system. Simply place all the speakers by the TV, and let the Pioneer do the rest.

For an AV receiver that blends Pioneer performance with comprehensive networking, the Pioneer VSX527 offers impressive results.

Price in title should be £169.

That's some spec for the money. Especially the LAN and airplay AND airjam bluetooth.

nice, wish i had waited, i bought the teac 7.1 for a ton a couple of weeks back.

Am I correct in saying this is a 5.1 receiver?

yup.

seems nice, same price at tescos atm though - possibly cheaper with cashback and vouchers.

Me too. I am really pleased with the Teac, although the extra HDMI's would have been really useful.

It only has 1 optical input which imo defeats the purpose of a dedicated amp like this.

How does internet radio work on an amp like this? Can one stream from an android phone via wifi and then to the amp connected via lan to the router?

Is the DLNA element audio only?

It's £169...

cold not a onkyo :p:D

Not at all. If you have HDMI sources, then you get the HD audio via this.

I can't connect my video recorder, Betamax player, Laserdisc player and Minidisc due to lack of connections. Who needs this HDMI interface that I've heard is the industry standard these days?!?!

Sky doesn't do 5.1 over HDMI and I also need to get 5.1 out of my tv (freeview HD) so I would need two optical inputs

I own an Onkyo, never again. I've had nothing but problems with it overheating, and based on my investigations into the company, I am not alone. It's a fantastic amp, but I had to get an antec AV cooler in order to stop it from melting the HDMI board.

Personally, I'd probably go for a Yamaha if I had to try again, but this looks like a really good amp for the money and I've always like Pioneer as a brand.

I'm after an amp which I can use to keep the sound level when I watch a movie. For example when you get a talking scene followed by a loud explosion I want the amp to surpess the volume so I don't have to be quickly adjusting volume levels to avoid waking up my daughter.

Does anyone know if that's something this can do?

Yep:
http://www.pioneer.eu/uk/products/42/98/405/VSX-527-K/specs.html
"If others are sleeping or studying, trying to enjoy a program quietly shouldn't compromise such sound qualities as surround effects or dialogue clarity. Midnight Listening Mode is the solution. It adjusts subwoofer, rear and centre speaker levels, while enhancing delay and compressing dynamic range, for greater enjoyment of cinema-like sound at low volume."

Does this support the Wii U's L-CPM for surround output?
I've been trying to find out and got my hopes up with this:
neogaf.com/for…323, but there's no mention in the manual and my google-fu is failing me.

I did.
Simply the price is £169, that's what the title should say, that's what people will look at...that's what the title is for (IMHO).
Then you read the text, maybe click the link, oh it's £169......then if you notice you have to sign up for the VIP club (which someone has already pointed out you may already be a member) and then you realise the price is still £169.....
Then if you sign up for the VIP club for the first time you get a voucher for £10 for any spend (over £100)....not just this item.
So the price is £169.00 simple as that......
If the title read : PIONEER VSX527 AV receiver only £169.00 @ Richer Sounds (£159 with VIP club sign up)
I'd appreciate what the true price is an what the Hot Deal price is.....
I hope that's a balanced response?

it looks a great deal & i'll probably go for it "thanks"
but you should add that the voucher is only valid "in store" as i called them & they told me i couldn't even use it over the phone.
so the big question is do i spend a fiver in fuel & a hour or so of my time to save a tenner.
probably.........yes.

Bought this yesterday for someone else. Swapped out my Onkyo 609 to test it.

Sounded OK but couldn't cope with the 10m HDMI cable to the TV. Kept breaking up. Changed for a shorted cable and all was OK.

Swapped my Onkyo back and the 10m cable. Everything working fine again. So if you be aware it may not work with long cables.

Cold. Bought the VSX-S500 for £354. Very please with it. Ok, it's almost a couple hundred quid more but much better IMO as it's slim-line and does not look as intimidating in the living room (plus look brill next to other AV equipment).

If you got the cash to burn, go for the VSX-S500, awesome piece of kit.

Exactly! Don't get me wrong, this is a good deal if you don't mind size etc. I didn't actually vote cold, just thought about it as I went for the slim-line. ;-)
