It's a streaming service where you pay £20 a month for high quality hi resolution sound

Tidal = High Quality Streaming - £20.00/Month... How high a sound quality do you want???

Thank you Sounds excellent but £20 a month isn't there any way of a tidal deal anyone ?

How good is this one compared to Astell & Kern AK Jr High Resolution Audio, Fiio X5ii, and Oppo Ha 2, for sound quality wise? It would be used with some AKG K702 cans, with a look to purchase a headphone amp at a later date? Tia.

Might sound odd but surely high quality audio is wasted on a portable player due to the normal uses of that player? On the train even the best noise cancelling headphones won't block out the noise of the train, same for most with road noises. I suppose on a plane it may work as intended or if you wanted to take some tracks to a friends house. Not sure normal audio is bad enough to warrant the cost of the player plus the subscription for the music.
That said I loved the mini disk concept and if Sony weren't so greedy it would of gone huge. Excellent quality music with portable disks that were nearly impossible to accidentally break, much better than CDs. The good thing was even mp3s sounded cleaner on mini disks and back then you didn't need to subscribe to get the music. So I suppose it is the newer equivalent but a bit more money.

I think that's why high end active noise cancelling headphones are a thing, but they impose a quality tradeoff too. TBH this is why I've mostly stopped collecting FLACs, the quality gain is offset by the lost convenience of not being able to use radio stations/playlists/whatever they're called.

The advantages of high quality audio gear don't get invalidated by a bit of outside noise, and not all environments you use them in will be noisy. I use my dedicated audio player when commuting because my headphones benefit from the more powerful amplifier than you'll find in a conventional smartphone.

Well you don't need to subscribe now, they still sell CDs after all. You can rip lossless audio from CDs easily and enjoy a high quality audio player that way if you want to. Subscription services are just a new avenue for consuming music that will appeal more to some people than it will to others.

Well the Oppo is DAC/amp rather than a player in of itself, so it's not really comparable without adding a few hundred other similar products into the mix!

But yeah, from the reviews I've read the AK Jr seems to have a slight edge in sheer resolution but there's not going to be a whole lot in it if you're listening with a relatively inexpensive pair of cans (in the grand scheme of headphones) like the K702s. I'd be choosing more on which has the design and features you like (the AK Jr is not an Android player so cannot use Spotify, Tidal etc).

The lighting deal for this has expired.

Curses, that was an amazing price. Slightly jealous as I just bought a Cayin N3.

There's still some Amazon Warehouse returns for £250. They're marked as used very good which is basically a return.
