Planning a Baby Shower? – Some ideas, offers and how to save money

Baby showers in their current form are a more recent trend to hit the UK but latest figures suggest that 50% of new mums-to-be now have one - with this in mind, I thought it might be helpful to share some ideas & offers - please feel free to share your experiences or ideas too

The Basics

It's very unusual for a mum-to-be to host her own baby shower, it's usually planned by a relative or close friend & there are lots of things to consider

Choose a Date & Time

Baby showers are usually held in the third trimester - around 4-6 weeks before the due date - this way the mum-to-be can relax & enjoy without the worry of a newborn needing attention

Consult with friends / family to set a date / time that suits everyone

The Venue

  • Home (of the host or the mum-to-be): The cheapest option, it's free, private and comfortable, though if to be held in the mum-to-be's home, make sure she is not left with the tidying up - ensure everyone knows that they have to stay behind to help
  • Hire a village hall or community centre - these can usually be rented for a couple of hours at a reasonable cost - they will have kitchen facilities & toilets but bear in mind you will be expected to clear up after the party, the chairs may not be comfortable & if large, will need lots of decorations to make it feel like an event
  • Restaurant or Party Venue - All you have to do is book a table - ask if you can decorate the venue
  • Outdoors: Hire a marquee or pop up a couple of gazebos in the garden or ask your local council if there are any outdoor spaces you could use

Themes & Decorations

Having a theme can add to the fun of the party plus help with the choice of decorations & food - it could be as simple as a colour scheme or you could take one of the mums-to-be hobbies / interests or her favourite holiday destination and theme it around that - my sil went to a Superheroes shower recently - the mum was a huge Marvel fan

Of course, you don’t HAVE to have a theme, just ensure you include what exactly is happening on the invitation so your guests know before they arrive - but if you do decide to have one, here are a few more ideas / offers

Boy or girl? - very popular theme for a baby shower is boy or girl. If the sex of the new arrival is known, you could theme around this

Pretty in Pink
Ballerina / Tutu
Alice in Wonderland

Gender Neutral

Twinkle Twinkle Little Star
Bee Happy - yellow themed
Guess How Much I Love You
Winnie the Pooh or other Disney characters
Gold or Silver themed

If you’re decorating a large venue then the costs can mount up. Cheap and cheerful options are balloons, streamers and other paper decorations

Here are some examples

Tesco have ongoing multi-buy offers on basic / themed tableware & party supplies

Now you have sorted the date / venue & theme it's time to sort out the invitations - these should be ideally sent out 5-6 weeks before the shower - don't be afraid to give people a polite nudge if they've not replied - you need to know how many people to cater for - if most of your invitees are linked to you on social media you could set up a group chat too

There are lots of ways to save money on your invitations. If you are creative, you could make your own on your computer by using any word processing program and cut and paste images based on the theme of your party or give something like Canva a try. Print them onto thick paper & you could have a professional looking invite for a fraction of the price.

There are also many free printable templates around on the internet - try these options

If you’d prefer to buy personalised invitations online then Zazzleare currently offering 15% discount sitewide with code ZGIFTSGALORE

Once you know roughly how many people are going to be attending the party you can start to budget for food - depending on budget & time of day / time of year of the shower, there are lots of options to choose from

Plan an afternoon tea & ask the guests to bring along some baked goods each, something like cookies, scones, cakes, finger sandwiches & chocolates

Buffet - an excellent option all year round - as above if on a budget, ask guests to bring a dish, lot's can be prepared in advance too but if you really can’t face the idea of making all the food, then lots of supermarkets offer pre-made platters - will pop some examples below

You can usually order online too, this can be handy as you can see exactly how much you are spending before you checkout & for ease, you can get them to deliver straight to the venue (though make sure if delivering to mum-to-be's house, you are there to unpack it all )
