Amazon, Google and Starbucks were yesterday accused of being “immoral”, “manipulative” and of “practising tax avoidance on an industrial scale”.The US companies were branded a disgrace by MPs who uncovered information about Starbucks’ “sweetheart deal” with Dutch tax authorities and attacked Amazon in the face of revelations about a $252m (£142m) French tax probe.

The fiery exchange, led by Public Accounts Committee chairman Margaret Hodge, saw all three companies accused of siphoning profits away from Britain by using a complex web of accounting strategies that were cynical and “unjust”.

“We are not accusing you of being illegal,” said Mrs Hodge, “we are accusing you of being immoral.”

MPs also expressed shock at revelations that Starbucks had signed a secret deal in the Netherlands – where it has its European headquaters – to pay a discount rate of corporation tax. The PAC demanded Starbucks finance chief Troy Alstead substantiate claims that the terms of the agreement meant he was unable to detail the rate.

In the UK, Starbucks has paid £8.6m of tax in the last 14 years thanks to reporting losses on it audited accounts in all but one of those years. But Starbucks UK also pays a long list of fees for royalties, intellectual property rights and interest on loans to other Starbucks divisions in Amsterdam, Switzerland and to the parent company in the US.

Erm, if it gets it's revenue from advertising and I use an Ad blocker... ?

(Genuine question for anyone who knows btw, not being sarcastic)
Will give it a try on my PC later HEAT

My face when I went into Settings -> Google -> Personal Info & Privacy -> Activity Controls.

Try it now folks!
Thanks for your comments so far. I have never seen an ad. Whether it pushes certain things to the top I don't know but honestly it is slick and is not something that pushes adverts at you all the time (or ever as far as I can tell).
ECOSIA SEARCH - plant trees when you search the web
Ecosia Search is a search engine that uses at least 80% of its profits from ad revenue to finance tree planting programs around the world. The Ecosia Browser uses Ecosia Search as its default search engine so you can plant trees while browsing the web. Planting trees is good for the planet, people and the climate. Trees create fertile forests, healthy communities and a strong local economy

I GOT THIS ON THE PLAY STORE. ITS A GOOD APP YES BUT YOU WILL GET ADD'S AS IT PAYS FOR THE TREES

Thanks Chris. I'm not saying you are wrong but I have used it for ages and I have never seen any ads. I assumed it generated income from searches and subsequent visits to sites.
I also have been using it for several months and I never had any ads or searching issues.
Not really keen on Bing, but I'll definitely use Ecosia as well as Google from now on.

The world needs more trees and I'm happy to do my bit to help provide them.

OP: Thanks for sharing...

Thanks and you are most welcome. I feel the same way.
I personally think Bing is pretty rubbish. I have never heard of Ecosia before and agree that we need more trees, so will certainly give it a go. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks. I am surprised actually. I haven't seen any and it works at least as well as Google does. Let me know if you would how you get on with it.
I would give this a go, but I can't deal with such a primitive system where you actually have to choose from dozens of keys on an input device to perform a search instead of just telling it what you want to look for.

Edit: Nothing stopping me from setting it as default for non-Chrome browsers, so I have.

But what if I don't really click on ads?
Even if you use an ad blocker or never click on ads, you still contribute to the movement by increasing the number of Ecosia users. The more monthly active users Ecosia has, the more relevant it becomes to advertisers.

Thanks, great amswer.
Amazing concept and got to admire the planet love! I'll try it. Thanks op!
I've been using it for a while. In todays world if you watch tv or follow the newspapers, any working class people are made to put their anger towards the poorer people of this country, and immigrants. Just look at a weeks worth of TV and tell me that these benefit programs are not made to purely create HATE. Facts are simple, those who actually abuse the system are less than 1% on benefits, people comment on the nice TV, or games console some of these people have, a lot of that is actually given to them by the makers of these shows. Its all one big distraction and pushing the blame elsewhere, when all these tax avoidance things are going on by huge companies, and the rich. Whether its legal or not, if a poor person refused to pay their tax cuz they need the money to feed their kids, its an extra fine or even jail, a rich person does it and nothing.
If all the rich and these companies actually paid the right amount of tax, this country would be a completely different state.

As for the NHS, you should all be worried, its been planned along time to get rid of it, they under fund it on purpose and now this new scheme they call ACO's is the beginning of it going private, its just under a different name

Great. Good luck!!
Is it usual for a search engine to ask for permission to "Acess your data for sites in..." (...the ecosia.org domain)?
