PLAYTV FOR PS3 ONLY £29.99 IN STORE @ GAMESTATION

OK,

I know this has been posted loads of times. But last post I could find was for Toys R Us over 1 month ago.

I can confirm iv just been and got this from Rotherham town centre Gamestation for £29.99 Brand New!

After reading the reviews and seeing my mates I decided to get one.

Cheapest I could find online was Tesco @ £49.97.

I also know it doesn't support the futuristic HDTV in the UK but honestly...I don't care because they will retail at over £100 I am sure and when they will come out nobody knows...

Anyway, for a PVR that allows dedicated recording, pausing and rewinding, works with bluetooth PS3 remote and with an excellent EPG £29.99 is a fantastic price.

So decide wether its hot or cold :-)!

thanks

You are modding your PS3? Im really tempted to do it but a little nervous.

I take it that its fairly easy?

For those that can't get in store.... I recently bought two from CEX and both were brand new... £32 delivered

It is really easy and permitted by Sony.

This link shows you how...

Just make sure that you use a Phillips-head screwdriver or you will strip the screws and turn a simple job into a nightmare.

uk.gamespot.com/fea…tml

This is the drive that I used and it works flawlessly...

There are others, just make sure that they state they are PS3 compatible.

Hope that this helps.

Yeah its a 5 minute job. Sony have made the hdd easy to access

bizzare question: can this be used on a pc?

as others say its real easy (although depending on how full you HD is time consuming!) & instructions are included in the PS3s manual!

i backed mine up to my 160GB ipod classic then put in my 320GB new HD. also now have a 60GB portable HD after getting a case off ebay for £1.50!

yup, as above said its a very easy process. As long as you use the correct screw driver its easy : )

remember to back up your trophies and game content (do a full system backup) to an external hdd before you start.

How does this access Freeview?

its more or less identical to a freeview box. At the back is a usual tv aerial socket. Difference is, freeview boxes output by scart or hdmi, this does it through usb into the ps3 - which then does it (from the ps3) by scart or hdmi

see -----> aerial socket in, usb out http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_nG3acn4DKDI/SKGLFHQKOnI/AAAAAAAABAc/6jvbjjgDAc8/s400/dgn_play_tv.jpg

Been looking for this cheap. Will call the local store tomorrow to check their price.

Bought one of these last year, excellent little add on for the ps3, record shed loads of programs with it and works flawlessly heat added!

Very easy, hatch on the side of the unit ejects the existing hard drive, couple of screws to remove and then pop a new one in, reboot the system and there it is ready to use.

If required do a backup of the current settings/game saves to a usb drive or flash stick, then restore this once the new drive is in and bamm your back where you were before but with a bigger drive.

I've not done it, but apparently yes.
ps3news.com/Pla…le/

definatly worth it, brought over 2 months ago at this price, the menu is unbeleivibly responsive and the fact you can put a massive harddrive in your ps3 makes it a hard recorder, also i beleive the picture is upscaled to hd or at least to a better quality then normal with an update

We've got this at home and its great as we generally watch either bbc iplayer through the PS3 or this the only problem we've got is that it seems to have some issues with direct watching of bbc 1 and 2 which is why we use iplayer not sure why this is as our freeview box in the other room works fine off the same aerial so not sure if just our box or what but its a great option instead of freeveiw if dont have enough ports on your tv, plus its one less remote as you can use the PS3 controller however it wont support the new HD freeview when it comes out which is something to consider

I would highly recommend. The interface and recording is great.

For some reason, the tuner on Play TV far outstrips the quality on my Samsung B650's integrated tuner.

For anyone who is put off by the lack of DVB-T2, you will be lucky if Sony releases such a version this year as DVB-T2 is going to cost as much as Freesat.

Also in Sainsbury's for the same price if you can find one

Great piece of kit.

Replacing PS3 HDD is really easy and explained in instruction manual. Only difficulty is if you don't have a good screwdriver, getting the old drive out of the caddy it is on can be tricky if the screw is tight. However, ask Sony nicely and they'll send you a new caddy. I did this, then before the new caddy arrived I went round my parents' and borrowed a better screwdriver. Job done, I now have a spare caddy somewhere.

It does upscale. Personally I find this great on BBC channels and they actually look like HD a lot of the time. ITV, however, compress their signal too much for it to look as good.

As well as being able to watch and record, you have many of the facilities of sky+ such as an on screen programme guide to select programmes to record from (you can set recording up to a week in advance), 120x fast forward (pressure sensitive using the triggers), pause live TV, record one programme and watch another etc. You can also export programmes to the cross media bar and copy them from there onto a USB device if you so wish. You can also record radio programmes and export them to mp3, although this strangely seems to take a long time to process.

It does not have series link yet, but I think this is meant to be coming in the next update. It also sometimes cuts off the end of a recording if the programme started/ended late.

As for freeview HD, there are apparently two types (which is what people are talking about when then mention DVB-T2 etc). The more basic type, which some countries use, is now supported apparently. The UK is getting the more advanced type. Now, people seem split on avforums etc as to whether there is a possibility of playtv ever supporting this. Most freeview boxes will not be able to decode the new signals because it requires more processing power. However, playtv doesn't do any processing itself, the PS3 does. And that has a rather powerful processor. So I can't see why, in theory, it shouldn't be possible for the PS3 to decode the new HD signals via the existing playtv adaptor and a software update. However, it seems 50% of people on avforums are saying that the signal itself is so different it would be completely impossible for the same adaptor to deal with the new type of signal. I don't get why - surely it is still a signal being transmitted digitally to our aerial, sent (not processed) by the adaptor to our PS3 to decode? But apparently it doesn't work like this, though I'm yet to understand why not.

Maybe a stupid question but can you record ps3 gameplay with this?

No....think of this just giving your PS3 an aerial.

Should give a word of caution to balance out some of the "picture quality is superb" comments.
On mine it's garbage.

Massive bonus though is that if you've got a PSP, you can watch freeview telly by leaving your PS3 on remote access with a Play TV box connected. Well handy.

mines great quality. better than my toppy!

i also use remote play! great for when F1 starts again and i cant be bothered to get out of bed at 3am to watch it, just lay there all toasty instead! just make sure you wear headphones to not disturd the wife! (& to cover her snoring! LOL

once the programmes are recorded onto my ps3 hard drive do i still need the playtv box plugged in to watch them or can i just access them off the xmb? thanks

You can copy the recordings onto the system area of the PS3 hard drive. You can then just watch them on the PS3 without the PlayTV box or even copy them onto a usb stick and watch them on a pc.

One "small" thing I will mention is just to remember the power consumption of the PS3 if you are gonna watch all your TV on this. Just a thought not dissing the product. Well OK I am a little but it's just worth thinking about because 200 watts just to watch TV is a lot (I think).

If I recall correctly you can also record one channel whilst watching another (it has 2 tuners) and also record TV whilst playing a game. Also with a PSP and RemotePlay you can watch TV, change channel, record (to the PS3 HDD or an external USB HDD) remotely even over the interweb.

I believe if you leave the PS3 in standby it will also power it on to record and back off once done.

Changing PS3 HDD is easy you just do a full system backup and then swap drives. You will need the latest firmware downloaded to a USB stick in a folder called "PS3" if I remember right. When it boots it will want this to setup the HDD. Once that's all done you do a full system restore and bobs ya uncle.

It's one of the best things I've purchased for my PS3 and the picture quality on mine is superb, but I guess it will have a lot to do with your aerial quality as well. I bought mine last year for £40 and thought that was a bargain, this is seriously hot. I bought one for my little bro, I got it from game as it's the same price instore as gamestation.

I have one that's never been opened & still in the package etc, if anyone's in the Manchester area they can have for £20 if they can pick up.

PM me if interested.

I am not saying you are not trustworthy, but given your relatively recent membership to HotUKDeals & your low post count I would advise anybody interested in your item to discuss this trade in a dedicated "For Sale / Trade" forum thread so that the (non-personal) details of the transaction can be recorded for protection of the both the buyer & seller's interests.

You would then be able to increase your trading feedback above zero.

errr, its for collection, buyer could see & inspect.

I get your point but basically I simply replied to the thread when I saw it was a play tv.
I got one with my PS3 in Jan & already have sky plau & freeview so have never opened it.

I keep meaning to put it on ebay but for that little amount I cant be too bothered, hence the point about collection.

As for trading feedback, I've got a life....:whistling:

Are you insinuating that those of us with established feedback do not? What a way to connect with your target audience!

If you wish to sell your item it costs nothing to create a thread here at HotUKDeals... you may even sell it today if you spend another few minutes on the task.

However, as you are probably aware not everybody lives within easy travelling distance of Manchester. Even I felt the draw of the big(ger) City lights of London over 10 years ago foregoing the warnings of the clouds of smog in the air, the anti-social public transport environments, the fast-paced parking antics, near stand-still commuting experience, and the floaty bits in drinking water; but I digress.

If you offered to sell your item with postage for, say £25, you may find a buyer quicker.

But... if you have a life, then queuing at a Post Office (if there are any left in Manchester now) may not be worth the effort either.

Good luck in any respect.

Yes the seller did (I'm not going to assume a gender).

However, a potential buyer (of either gender) may be wary of meeting at a location to exchange goods for payment as the item sealed in the box may not work. Not everybody wants to divulge their home address & may propose to arrange to meet at a central public location convenient to both parties.

Thanks for your reply though.

dont worry fanpages, just teasing.
I simply read thread & thought that I still had mine here, unopened etc & thought someone could have a deal...

anyway, ...BFN

I paid £31.50 for this pre-owned at GAME last year, great little device. I would definitely recommend upgrading the HDD though. Depending on the channel, some have a higher bitrates than others, an hour of video can be 1-2GB in size. I got a WD 320GB 2.5" drive on Amazon for £40 (think its still that price now), and a sata enclosure for the PS3s old 80GB HDD.
The "export to xmb" feature is great, it allows you to transfer your recordings to your PC and encode them for ipods etc.

No stock in my local shop at worthing and they say they haven't had it in for months either and to try their website, upon which it's £59.99 :x

Sigh

Where exactly can you get it for this price? My store says they havent even had any since Christmas.... the only one they have is used/preowned and has a £35 price tag on it!
