Plex on the App Store has dropped to £1.49 which is half it's usual price. The best cross platform streaming app, usually only stays this price for a few days:

Plex organizes all of your personal media, wherever you keep it, so you can enjoy it on any device. With Plex, you can easily stream your videos, music, photos and home movies to your iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch from your home computer running Plex Media Server (available for free at http://plex.tv)

Good for all those that took advantage of the recent cheap Chromecast deals...

EDIT: now half price on other platforms too: Android £1.16 and Windows Mobile £1.49

Just to add if you get Plex plus, you get the android app for free.

does your pc need to be on to access content via your tablet?

£1.16 for android in the play store.. Not sure if this is the usual price or not

It needs a source server to feed the data so if got a friend with a high enough bandwidth out they can choose to share their media library, or with subscription you can upload media to the cloud that has already been made into a format ready to play on plex. . but to be honest that's still a bit beta it does work although sometimes uploads get to big to upload fast enough, so work better the faster your Internet upload speed is. With the added subscription to you can download to your phone and tablet, best done at home as faster before you go.

plex continues to improve. Been long term user recently brought lifetime think that was worth it, although sync and cloud storage need some work.

I've never fully understood plex. Does plex require I have a PC running 24 7 to stream from? I currently use xbmc with a Nas drive hosting films, artwork etc through mysql which allows me to view a program, pause it and continue watching from another pc. Does plex offer any additional benefits? Also, I need to jailbreak my ipad for xbmc, is this the same with plex? Cheers in advance

If your NAS cannot run the Plex server then yes a PC that is running the Plex server will have to be on to use Plex.

XBMC and Plex are pretty similar, think of it like XBMC is a 'get' (as in you install XBMC and it itself will be able to hook into your media and play it), Plex (the server part) is a 'give' and then the Plex apps (or the Home Theatre app on the PC) receives from the Plex Server to play.

For your situation if Plex can run on your NAS then Plex would be easier as you would no longer have to bother with MySQL to sync watch and play positions, Plex is also a better experience for mobile because of things like transcribing on the server and no jailbreaking ect.
But if your NAS cannot run Plex Server or you have files like .iso then stick with XBMC you already have a MySQL setup so you are on par functionality wise with Plex.

Think I'm officially old as this all sounds gobbledygook too me lol! wish I understood it more oO
I've got chrome cast do I need this or not? Ha ha,

I have a few Apps that can play videos via PLEX server on my network. Can I ask if a dedicated PLEX apps would make any difference?

Thanks.

Plex allows you to "stream" video files on your PC to iOS, Android, Chromecast and other supported devices.
If you pay for Plex Plus / Plex Pass you get some additional features.. Whether they are useful to you or not, I don't know.

So if you have a load of movies / tv shows on your computer you could watch them on the big screen via your chrome cast. If you don't you don't need Plex

I've just bought this and have installed it on my WHS server, currently adding my 'vast' library. It's not as 'pretty' as xbmc, but I quite like it.

Playing the theme tune when I first open the show is a little annoying.

You can switch it off.

Nearly bought this yesterday for android, so glad i waited! Just setting up a freenas server atm so this will come in handy for playing thru my free chromecast (wuaki.tv) and various tablets...cheers OP.

Have you installed the server software on pc or NAS server?

Was tempted at 2.99, but all over this for £1.49 - good spot - Thanks.
Using it to listen to music when I'm in the garden on the iPhone, rather than have to use youtube all the time.

Purchased for my Windows Phone, works great. Thanks to the OP.

got it last week for free as well.!

I would love to see what software from the 80's you were using! We use this all the time to stream content to our Chromecast. Very easy to use GUI to find our media.

I'm really curious as to what made you think it was the worst 69p you spent?

Well that's answered my question I don't need it as I've not got any TV or movies on PC! I use now TV or on demand services. Thank you for the straightforward answer! Saved me some cash too!

you dont really need the app, you can just stream from your web browser, granted the interface isn't as slick, but in my experience it works a lot better than the app.

Thanks op perfect for the new Nexus

I had to do some hacking to get my buffalo NAS to run MYSQL, its only 233 mhz so don't think it will run as a server. Will leave the XBMC as its working so why fix it if it aint broken.

The option i would like is to be able to watch videos remotely when im away with work, that being said, i've not spent enough time to research if and how this can be done with XBMC
Edited by: "sparkzilla" 15th Jul 2014

So can I watch my videos etc from a different network as standard? Or is that a plex plus thing?

I have plex on my server at home and think its great. I have also shared servers with my brother so we can watch each others content. I use it on an lg smart tv and a roku. I also have it on my playbook so I can watch stuff at work on nights. Excellent bit of software
