What does it offer that Kodis doesn't?Apologies if these sound like simplistic questions, had a quick Google but didn't really find much if an answer.

Kodi sits on a client and streams film/TV from somewhere (typically a NAS).
Kodi is free and open source. It is highly configurable but takes a little understanding to setup.

Plex requires both a server app, and a client app. The server app is able to transcode the video stream, and serve many different client apps (front ends) at the same time.
Plex is proprietary, and thus has apps for web/android/apple etc. It is a little less configurable but very easy to setup and does what most people need out of the box.

What this means is with Plex it's possible to be simultaneously watching a 4k film..
    - in original 4k film on TV in lounge
    - on the plex mobile phone app (auto transcoded to lower resolution, so it doesn't kill your data) via 4g
    - on a laptop in a hotel somewhere abroad (transcoded), or your kids from uni halls for example.

So if you're tech savvy and only watch films on your one pc/TV, Kodi is excellent!
If you want to use multiple clients, or have multiple people all able to access the same TV/film content, that's where Plex is strongest. But some features sit behind a paywall, which is why you need Plexpass 😃

Hope that helps. I'd say if you've used Kodi, give the free Plex a whirl and you'll understand the difference very quickly. (edited)

I like that they take any 'credit' you've still got for the month and deduct from the lifetime sub. Mine was £69.70.

Plex isn't like Kodi, Kodi is a media player, Plex is a media server/sharer, you either need to have a Plex library yourself from your own files, or get access to someone's account and they let you stream from it via a Plex client/app

I’ve never understood what plex is? Isn’t it just a nice user interface to access your own content for the free version? What does the paid version actually add? Their website is useless at explaining it.

Depends how you use it. Most smart TV's now have a Plex app so the power of your PC is irrelevant - it's just streaming data. In fact you can run Plex server on a Raspberry Pi. The thing to watch for is file format. If you're streaming say a HDR file and your TV does not support HDR, then the file needs to be transcoded (conversion on the fly) by the server to a version which is not HDR. This is where the server potentially requires quite a bit of power. Some users also set it up to downscale files for say a 720p mobile device when away from home and again that transcoding needs quite a bit of power. It's a lot less of an issue nowadays with many recent TV's and mobile devices being so feature packed so most files can be ran natively (original format with no changes).

I use Plex a lot via a Synology NAS and it's pretty hard for me to justify buying the lifetime pass as it really doesn't add much. I might go for it as £70 for life is cheap and it's good to support them, but it's most definately not required for the main features of Plex. (edited)

Skimmed the comments and havent seen this mentioned. But the benefit I got from Plex Pass (I used the Brasil trick to get it even cheaper) is Plex amp. Basically your own Spotify. Obviously you need to know about downloading music etc. But 6 months of Spotify pretty much paid off my annual pass for Plex. A lot of music I listen too isn't on streaming services. Plus means I can have flac files.

No mate, Plex is very clever as it scans the folders you tell it to e.g. Movies. TV Shows, Home Videos, Photo's, etc. As an example as soon as you upload a film/movie it'll scan it and then upload all the images and information, you can then change the poster, name, add to watch lists or collections. I use a Synology 2 Bay NAS DiskStation DS220+ and the setting of that up was relatively easy with help from NAS Compares on Youtube. I love it and everything I throw at the NAS it copes with, brilliant piece of kit.

Cool just in case you'd found a special way. I think it used to be allowed a few years ago. Its a sneaky one.

Its the reason i bought pass last time as the kids really like plex now they are more into tv stuff and i dont care much for seeing all sorts of half watched friends eps and other movies etc on ‘my’ deck when i have my own set of 4/5 series im watching right now. Stuff gets confusing yo!?

If I can stream just about any TV series or movies for free abroad/home? …If I can stream just about any TV series or movies for free abroad/home? Why would I need a plex? Not being smart a*se just asking a genuine q.

For me, my addition with an home media server started when I realised I didn't watch much BBC content at all. I started to wonder why I was paying over £140 a year for something I wasn't using. I ended up cancelling my TV Licence, and buying DVDs of films and TV shows I actually wanted to watch instead. It was ok, but I'm actually lazy so put a PC under the TV and ripped my DVDs to it.
Now I have quite a large curated collection of TV and Movies that the family and I actually want to watch, things we enjoy and will continue to enjoy. There isn't 100s of movies and TV shows to scroll through that we don't want to watch.

Things have moved on since I started out with just a Windows machine under my TV. At first it was just that connected to the TV, then we had windows media player that let some of the media be shared via DLNA over the network and we could watch the movies on the Xbox, and other computers with a very basic menu system of all the content. It was getting better, but still bit hit and miss getting things working.
Then Plex came along with Apps on a small box called the Roku, followed by native apps for iOS, Android and even the Xbox. It was at that moment where a premium Netflix-alike service was in the hands of home users without the monthly fee. And it really does make the difference. Any device, anywhere, easy to use, slick, professional-feeling premium service you run yourself, with your own content.
No fumbling over adverts, or weird services that might not be there tomorrow, or worrying about getting letters from your ISP, or having your computer infected with malware etc.

Now I just have a small server tucked away and use Plex Server and all my devices have native Plex clients. All my family have their own accounts and it keeps track of the shows they're watching for them and ultimately, we have control over what is there to watch. Plex takes care of everything else, all the data about the movies and TV shows are downloaded automatically so you can find the actors, etc.

So to answer your question, you don't need Plex. No one needs it, but it's very nice to have if you have a family and have your own movies and tv shows you want to watch without messing around too much.
Some people will just load up iPlayer instead and continue to pay for the TV licence, others will add a TV decoder to their Plex server and get Live TV as part of their Plex service, others people are just ok with paying for Netflix, and yourself? You might simply be fine with just using your web browser and searching out some free streaming sites and dealing with whatever comes with that. (edited)

LMAO at the discount code: "LIFETIMEOFCOMFORT" indeed!!!

Lifetime of checking their forum in frustration more like as they continue to ignore, fingers in the ears, the most BASIC and FUNDAMENTAL problems in their core product while they seek to roll out rubbish no one wants in order to monetize and bloat their beta software (and I'm being kind not describing it as alpha even after all these years).

DO NOT buy it for the Live TV or DVR, it is not fit for purpose.

I am lucky enough to be able to now run TVHeadend on my NAS instead, for a much better Live TV and DVR experience and can now actually timeshift TV without getting programmes spoiled by random jumps to live TV or other myriad problems.

I say this as someone who bought a lifetime pass on the cheap like this a number of years ago - have a look on their forums for issues regarding whatever platform you want to use and whatever functions you want to acheive and you will see that there are a vast number of problems stemming back months and even years that have never been fixed before deciding to waste your money on this bug ridden nightmare.

Managed to upgrade for £37 here are the steps.

    1. Upgrade to free trial using UK card and code AD-ONEMONTH with country set to UK
    2. Cancel subscription
    3. Reactivate sub using the code HDHR01MONTH and this time country set to Turkey with 75000 as postcode. This step will just validate your card to be correct
    4. Upgrade sub using the LIFETIMEOFCOMFORT and saved card.

It took me few trials and errors. (edited)

I dont think it provides much benefit, but for me the benefit was being able to create multiple users so each user can have there own 'on deck' (i.e. currently watching) and etc. Like in Netflix or amazon, or even iplayer, you can choose 'Who' is watching asnd it lets you pick up where you left off. Sure you can do that without the pass, but it means everyone is using the same account and it gets a bit annoying. Plus you can separate acccess to libraries and content more easily on a per user basis.

The website details what the paid pass gets you. but you dont need the pass.

Plex is a server that servers up content. It's basicallly like your own personal netflix service. But it has a very wide range of client apps, so you can use a browser of course but you can use your TV, your phone, your tablet, your laptop, etc to install te plex app and then play back your own stuff whereever you are. It works great.
I like the synopsis info, the easy to use interface, the keeping track of what ive watched. Being able to watch something and stop then go to another TV, or device and continue what I was watching etc. It's only really useful if yo have a lot of content, or a number of people accessing it(like a family) If it's just you on your PC, then just double click in VLC what you need its easier.

Some people sell access to their libraries and you can add their libraries so you can access their content.

jellyfin is a totally free alternative. (edited)

Because, in actuality, you can't stream just about any TV series of movie for free.
I have a Plex server that my friends and family all stream from, and they send me regular requests to add certain movies and TV shows to it because most are simply not available on streaming platforms.
Even those which are, will only be available intermittently.

Try it yourself. Think of a few films over 3 years old, then see how many of them are available on Netflix/Prime/Disney+/iPlayer. You'd be surprised.
Streaming platforms are great for browsing, but if you've actually got a film in mind it's a crapshoot as to whether it's available anywhere.
Even proprietary things, for example the Planet of the Apes franchise. It's made by Fox, so owned by Disney, and yet only 3 of the 9 movies are on Disney+ (and those 3 are all from different continuities!)

I think you made a very good point, but isn't what you are saying, and …I think you made a very good point, but isn't what you are saying, and your example eloquently demonstrates, is in fact you can't stream just about any TV series or movie for a price!?Also afaict a "one ring to rule them all" service, covering all the contents from all the commercial streaming providers, still does not exist.Notwithstanding the above, what I think is largely true, and of course ironic, is that if you know how, you can stream/download just about any (or at least more) TV series or movie for free.

Well I took the previous poster's question to mean "if I already have Netflix, Prime, and Disney+, why would I ever need Plex?".
I grant you, they may have meant "if I can illegally stream any TV show/movie for free, why would I ever need Plex?"
My answer is probably still applicable though. A stream only lasts as long as it's being hosted somewhere. And older content is much more difficult to find online to stream (illegally or not).
The benefit of managing your own library (for me anyway) is that I can download or rip digital files and store them relativity cheaply and conveniently, and not have to worry about suddenly losing them or being unable to find them online. When storage is so cheap, why bother streaming a possibly unreliable file, when you can just download and keep a version, in full HD with 5.1 sound, for nothing?
(Obviously drives can fail, but discs can also rot or scratch, so nothing is invincible)
Of course, all of this is possible without Plex. In fact, I tend to use VLC to watch most things at home (because the Plex for Xbox client can be frustrating).
The reason Plex is so good is it allows my friends and family to stream my ever-expanding library, for free, from anywhere in the world. For those who aren't savvy about finding free online streams, Plex is a very safe and user-friendly alternative.
My dad would struggle to stream the new Bond film even on a PC, let alone via his TV. But with Plex he was able to watch it in HD in his living room from my server 60 miles away, while it's still playing in cinemas. That's what I like best about it - it allows you to curate your own streaming service for an exclusive group of important people
