This deal is expired. Here are some options that might interest you:

Plex is a super powerful tool for accessing all your own films, photos and music from just about any of your digital devices. It automatically catalogues all your media in a really slick way (think Netflix Style) so is easy to find.

Some of you will already be familiar with Plex.

Others who do not have media streamers, or who only recently bought a media streamer may not.

Plex allows you to share and access all your media stored on a computer or other supported device, e.g. Nvidia Shield, no matter where you are. The device you have all your data stored on is setup as the 'PLEX Server' .

You can then access Plex on devices including your phone, tablet, Roku Stick, Fire Stick, some Smart TVs, and Macs/PC. Plex also supports casting to a Chromecast.

3333209.jpg
There is a free version of Plex and a Premium Plex Pass. Features of both can be seen in the following link:

plex.tv/en-gb/plex-pass/

Just create a free account by providing your email address and then set up monthly Plex Pass.

Enter the code 'Goal' into the promo code box and this allows you to try out the premium version, free of charge, for one month.

You need to provide payment details (e.g. PayPal) to activate the trial. But as soon as its activated you should be able to cancel straight away, so you don't forget, and still use the Premium Plex Pass until the end of the trial.

Even if you don't decide to continue with premium, the free account is still very good.

Definitely worth a look!

Thanks OP.

Bought the HDHomeRun especially for plex on my nas, wasn't impressed with the integration. It is impressive on paper, but just lacks here and there enough to spoil it.

Had the trial from the HDHR box, and was sure I'd buy the lifetime pass when I bought the tuner, but didn't bother.

Plex is good, and it's good for free, the subscription isn't really that necessary as the main features are for free.
CN you share your server with people around globe? Is there any website where someone is kind enough to share these servers?

Thanks for the input kencol you're right, a lot of the features most will use regularly are free, and thought this post was also a good way of letting people find out more about Plex given the influx of people picking up streaming devices at the moment.

I think in a lot of cases the premium features are geared up for heavier users who may want a niche feature. People can try the free month if they like, revert to free, and if they're enjoying plex they may might well realise free offers them all they actually need.

Yes you can share with others and I'm sure there are people who share their media but i do not know of a website myself, so maybe best to have a search online.

Agreed, Plex is great, have ripped most of my movie collection and no longer have to take out the DVD or bluray to play on any TV in the house, even streaming on my phone away from home (after paying a couple of quid to unlock the mobile app).

I know they update it, so as it improves, it might fix the issues with the tuner, but likely I won't find out (unless I use free trial from time to time).

I'd probably take a punt on the lifetime sub for about £50, but you know us HUKD folk dont often pay full price.

There are a couple of forums on Reddit that cover this. Some charge a monthly fee which seems stupid but every one to their own.
I managed to get on one that offered it for free, he can pull the plug at any time but so far after 12 months I still have access.

It would have to be a business who does it. As, I share mine with a few family members and when around 4 people are watching something it hammers the PC, as they are all in different devices and it transcodes the streams accordingly plus the movies are all on the same hardrive.

Thank you I never knew I could do this. Do you know what features are in the plex pass, as I currently use it to stream around my house, what am I missing out on by not having the plex pass currently?

Downloading vids onto app for offline viewing, recording from tuner, syncing your own photos...maybe more , but the the main functionality is free.

I’ve had Plex for many a year.
Its gotten progressively worse.

The best feature was the Plex Cloud. It didn't last long though.
Why do company's, when they finally add a new good feature, immediately remove it?
why?

If you have a Qnap NAS, you have to keep it offline at present anyway, as there is malware and spyware now especially designed just for Qnaps.

Makes it sort of pointless.
The Plex DVR functionality didnt work for me. It can't get past the postcode section. Apparently this is a common problem. Luckily I had only paid for a months Plex Pass, so put it down to experience.
Plex is fantastic - it even downloads automatically the movie covers, movie synopsis and even ratings. Most movies added to plex have the option for viewers to play a trailer first. With plex pass I use the sync option so I can watch movies on the plane which have downloaded into my iPad Pro so I don’t need WiFi/ 4G. Here’s a screen show of the DVR facility from my phone too! Just to add you can cast from the app to a Chromecast if your tv doesn’t have the plex app. I use a fire tv with the plex app installed.

I got Plex Pass especially for the sync feature and just can't seem to get it to work.
I use Plex with my Nas and my NVidia shield but I can't see how i'd really gain anything with a plex pass, but a freebie is a good way to find out i suppose.
Upload speed in uk is sad. Currently using virgin upload 30-35 mbps, Not great, best in the area.

Main benefit of Plex Pass is hardware based transcoding, because Nvidea have struck a deal with Plex you get hardware encoding for free on the Shield anyway.

aha, thanks for that. i do believe the DS118, which is the NAS I have, also does transcoding as well..

The DS118 won't have any where near enough power to transcode anything really. The Shield TV is good to hardware transcode 3 or 4 streams.

I've been using the free features for a few years now. It's great little app handles UHD 4k etc also Chromecast feature is great.

Just put the first few letters of your post code. Not the full. So RG22... or SW22 etc
That's what I thought for me too, to try out the Plex Pass features for a month as I've been using the free features of Plex for years

Jellyfin is gaining traction now - and it's all free, even on Android, Amazon Fire and IOS etc.
I suppose heat for the deal! (although I think it's always offered a 30 day trial?)
Personally I moved from XBMC (well Kodi) to Plex as I have all my own media (go me for not parting with my physical disks!) and wasn't prepared to spend anything on it except time.
I have found it quicker to just run VLC and point it to the network shares...

Yes, last time I looked in I was really liking how Jellyfin has come along and great to have a strong Foss alternative. Have they added the Roku support yet do you know as earlier in the year I think they were still working on it?
I both love and hate Plex (only tried the free version) When it works well it does a great job of cataloguing my films, music, home video and photos. However it often screws up details in the catalogue albeit doing no harm to the files themselves. It will suddenly decide to change dates or artwork on films that it previously had listed correctly. With music it tends to change listed albums into separate tracks meaning instead of having say ten albums, it will show me that I have 100 albums all of which are individual tracks. I can usually resolve the problem, but it often means losing a lot of the details that I entered manually.
What it all means is that it's a lot more hard work than it needs to be, but as I've yet to find a program that's features are as good as Plex I will stick with it and keep looking or hope Plex sort their problems out. In the mean time a free trial seems good to introduce you to it's features.
