For Red/Blue nostalgia I'd say that Lets Go Pikachu/Eevee are a better choice.

If you can't decide between Sword or Shield version look up the version exclusive Pokémon (which are the only difference) then if still undecided just flip a coin.

Lets Go Pikachu or Eevee would be good as they are remakes of the original game

It would absolutely be a great gift for someone that enjoyed the originals. The series has come quite a long way now, but the core gameplay is still similar and will be nostalgic. I started with red/blue myself, haven't played all of the sequels, but I am enjoying this one.

The two versions are more or less the same game, they just feature some different catchable Pokemon, and a few other minor differences that don't really impact the overall experience.

You can find all the differences between the two versions here:

I personally picked Sword because I like the legendary Pokemon in that more, and it also is on the cover which looks nicer.

You should start with Pokemon Let's Go Eevee or Pikachu, it serves as a good bridge between Pokemon Go and the more "core" series Pokemon like Sword and Shield. After you are done with Eevee or Pikachu version, you can get Sword or Shield.

This is the current best price I could find for Let's Go Eevee (Amazon):

Pokemon let’s go pikachu/eevee is more like Pokemon go even down to catching pokemon where the screen looks the same. But if your after a more traditional Pokemon game get sword or shield.
All 3 worked for me, thanks
All 3 codes worked. Many thanks!

Btw highly recommend it, I'm a big fan of the originals and addicted to levelling the pokemon

Disagree with others, get Sword or Shield, particularly if your kids are of school age.

If they have a switch and your thinking of buying them a Pokémon game, get Sword/Shield. Pokemon is a social game, kids (depending on age) will want to compare what Pokémon they've caught and possibly battle their mates. Getting the latest game near release date gives them plenty of time to slowly explore the games and build up their Pokédex (Pokémon collection), getting maximum value out of the game.
Thanks

Game is shockingly easy.
It's okay for nostalgia but the gameplay itself gets boring really fast because there's no remotely challenging points in the game.

Yes, it very much feels like a game for small children, with not much to offer for an adult or even an older child.

Your 'rival' Hop, is a complete joke in the game. He even picks the Pokemon that yours is super effective against as their starter, just to make it super easy mode.

I didn't lose a battle the whole game, and most things were just one-shot.

Yeah, you're exactly right. He's not even a rival, he's basically your best friend.
It's very much devolved into a game to not upset anybody. I sailed through the game just like you did, without losing a single battle. Didn't need to pay attention to PokeMon types. Even some level 60 wild PokeMon can be caught with ultra balls without weakening them first.

Raids aren't much better. Slightly harder but still really easy, even with NPCs on the team.

I also grew up playing original on the first gameboy. Its a wicked game. Cant fault it. Just dont have time to play it loads like back in the day haha.

Highly recommend
Your a Legend for sharing this mate, thanks a million
I'd say Sword over Shield only because Zacian > Zamazenta

Legit seems awful, idk, they've been making pokemon games easier and easier with each release (I last played on 3ds) and now it even tells you which moves are effective or not against the pokemon you're battling... might as well select the move for you an hence play the whole fight itself.
Theory is pokemon games nowadays are pumped out with minimum effort just to be able to keep momentum and sell merchandise (you probably don't imagine how much money Nintendo makes off that).

Tbh I'd say just get DraStic for Android and play pokemon HG SS if you've got a decently sized phone.

I would say yes. I have bought the shield for exactly same reasons and I am 99% satisfied (1% being too many pokemons I don't know as I stopped on gen 3 I think and now it's like gen 8). But I have clocked like 35h on it thus far and still enjoying

But I got an advance sp with fire red the other day on fb marketplace, so will be investing time in some proper nostalgia soon

I got let's go pikachu and got annoyed after an hour or so of playing and just sold it. Maybe locations are the same as original games, but the game is nothing like that with no real wild pokemon fight and exp system. I found shield much more enjoyable.

I can understand that, I preordered Shield to get it at release but Let's Go Pikachu I got as an Xmas pressie and thoroughly enjoyed, but to me it's a spin off not a real Pokémon game. I still think it's the safer bet for a casual gamer seeking the nostalgia of playing the older game boy games though.

I played red and blue about 20 something years ago (I'm old now, can't remember the specifics) when I was in senior school (35 now) and only pokemon I've touched since then was let's go pikachu.

I can definitely recommend getting this, I got it given as an early xmas present and am about 10 hours in now and while I think a lot of the new pokemon just look stupid and have no idea of what is good anymore, I am enjoying it a lot.

It is exactly how my young teenage brain was picturing the black and white gameboy version. It is a real joy to play, the "rival" is a bit cringey compared to the arse that was Gary but there are a lot of improvements in this version and a lot of the grind has been removed i.e. you don't need to put a weak pokemon in every fight in order to get it levelled up, the whole party shares the XP as you earn it.

Going into this with not much expectations and not being hardcore about the mechanics the only way I could imagine pokemon being better now is if it looked and played like Breath of the Wild in that art style and big open world environment.

Another person recommended you get let's go for the nostalgia. Don't. It has almost no battle mechanics, it is EXACTLY how you remembered the old game so you will not struggle with puzzles/challenges I imagine and honestly it was an ok but very forgettable experience.
