Picked up the 2 disc Ponyo (BR & DVD) at Asda today. This was in Ashford, Kent, but I guess it should be in all stores.

Visually this thing is a painting in motion. Storywise, it is a kiddie fauirytale. Neither the childlike innocence but maturity of Totoro, nor the heroic epicness of Nausicaa.

On a side note, if you think star wars or lord of the rings is epic - watch Nausicaa.
If you think any disney movie is charming - watch Totoro.
If you want to get adventure and wonder - watch Laputa.
If you want to be in tears with your heart touched - Watch Fireflies.

Well, that's only if you want it to be. If for your tastes something is only epic if it has very over-the-top dramatic music, lots of machinery and/or combat and drama, then your statement is correct.

However, all of the adults that I know that have watched this movie along with me have enjoyed this, and not just because of the visuals. I do not think Ponyo is underperformed by any of the other Ghibli movies.

If its £11 in my local I'll pick it up, otherwise I'll wait to get the special edition.

Same in Coatbridge, tempting.

Who said I xclassed "epic" as over the top music and what other blah blah you blahed?

You just assumed what I like? :?

And, ponyo did underperform.

Personally I found it weird and dull which is a difficult combination to achieve. Ditto Spirited Away. My six year old liked it though so it was worth the Sat morning 95p.

great film. heat

Hot from me!

If you want your heart ripped out and stomped all over watch Grave of the Fireflies more like

But I love it because its so grueling.

Hmm well in Merry Hill (Dudley) it was about £15 or so I believe...but will check again tomorrow when I'm at work. Thanks for the heads up.

(although I don't have a blu-ray player and I should either buy one or stop buying blu-rays)

This is one of the better Ghibli films although I did expect more from it. Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, Nausicaa and Howls are my personal faves. Absolutely hated Tales from Earthsea but Ponyo was a return to form, if not as brilliant as the titles listed above.

Good price for a new Blu-Ray but think I will wait to get it on Blu-Ray as I will be forced to buy the entire back catalogue all over again on Blu-Ray

Brilliant price

directed by Gorō Miyazaki, hence...

Miyazaki is the master of quality animation. Simply a genius.

Agree entirirely.

My faves are Spirited, mononoke and Howls. Get such a magical experience watching them.

Oh bum. I just paid £16.99 for this from HMV. Should have checked here first!

Good film, don't know if it benefits much from blu-ray though.

It's 19.99 in-store at HMV, and I think 14.99 on their website, so it's a great deal if it's that price at Asda.

My 2 year old absolutely loves this, it's her joint favourite with Toy Story. It's a great film for young children.

I saw this in the cinema and whilst I thought it was beautifully animated, kids werent impressed at all- pah to youngest spoilt by visual SFX!!

I liked it, but wouldnt buy it- heat for the price though!!

Woah I am gonna check my local asda tomorrow. Only reason I not picked up the Blu-Ray copy is because HMV's rip off prices!

It's alright, but yeah, this is more aimed towards kids than adults imo.

If you were to compare it to Princess Mononoke or Spirited Away for example, it's just mediocre, but on its own it's a good children's cartoon that is a different take on the Little Mermaid.

Thought this was okay, not a patch on Spirited Away.

Don't watch fireflys its heart breakingly sad. If your not bawling your eyes out by the end your not human.

£14.97 in my local Asda (Charlton)

You left me stunned with your comment about fireflies. In my initiall post those are the EXACT words I put, before erasing it because I thought people would be put off by it lol. So strange.

My personal Miyazaki favourites are Nausicaa and Totoro.

Afterall, those two movies are Miyazaki's own personal favourites out of all his work to date, and it shows why.

lol Graves is a required taste but I would really recommend it. One of the most shocking war films (or any films really) I've ever seen.

I have a soft spot for Howl's. I don't know what it is and I know there are better but I like it. Its "comfy" in a way. But Totoro is of course a lot of fun.

BTW this deal is cheaper than the standalone DVD price (and it is a combi pack anyway so it comes with the DVD)
