We have one of the popup tents which we use for this purpose (]see here)

It's a bit more but you can get them reduced quite often (we paid 25 for ours, also I have seen the Gelert version in Halfords reduced too)

Much bigger and better protection.

Probably fine on a beach with no wind - but if there's a breeze blowing it looks like it'd blow away. Cold from me.

Are you sure about that or just guessing? Usually they have pockets at the bottom that you put sand or rocks in to keep them still so they are unlikely to blow away.

Not entirely guessing - I've used lots of tents and shelters (but not this particular type) - so I'm judging from experience. I may be wrong - perhaps someone who's used this particular model will correct me.

Looking again at the enlarged picture although there don't seem to be pockets to hold the tent down at the front there are peg patches instead - it may well be OK so long as you can stop the wind getting under it.
