How is a dedicated tool that uses the same accelerometer found in any smartphone better than a £3 app?

Because most smart phones aren't flat or 4 foot long.

I am pretty sure you've never done the most basic DIY to not question how a smartphone performs against an almost 1m long metallic ruler
Just picked one up damaged box and no instructions, anyone know where I can get a copy of the manual?

Thanks, I searched for IAN and then tried scrolling through all the Powerfix pages to no avail.

However I think I have pretty much worked out all the functions:-

CAL: Calibrate - Not tried it as it seems pretty well set up already
Unit: Self explanitary
H/M: Hold/Memory (quick press to store/ long press to cycle through in reverse order)
Power: Long press on/off
Sound symbol: Beep when display shows zero degrees
REF:Zero at current angle

Anything I've missed or guessed wrong?

I can't really help as I bought this for the father but your assumptions seem sound.
To calibrate, place on a surface no more than 5° off horizontal and press CAL. The level will show CAL 1. Turn the level through 180° (horizontally) and press CAL again. It will show CAL 2. The level is then calibrated. Otherwise BFCsider had the functions right.
I've attached (hopefully) the instructions. I thought mine were missing too, but had got shoved to the bottom of the case which is why they're rather screwed up.
