Looks like ShopTo has cast their lot to get in preorders of this new product early.

May look the same as Skylanders and Disney Infinity but Nintendo's take on the 'toys to life' category differs in the sense that characters are usable across different games rather than being tied to a particular title.

Confirmed support for:
Super Smash Bros
Mario Kart 8
Mario Party 10
Captain Toad's Treasure Tracker
Yoshi's Woolly World

Also, I've seen some confusion about this but these characters are completely optional for gameplay.

I don't need these. Will end up buying.

Tempting, but i don't anticipate they'll be more than a tenner when they come out; I'm holding out on buying.

There are currently 33 Characters announced and likely a few more to come. This could be very expensive for someone who wants them all. However, I still want to buy a few.

Was hoping they would be £9.99

I think that's my sweet spot too. Maybe other shops will create their own bundles.

I might pick up a couple of these, but definitely need to be under a tenner.

Nintendo also need to announce exactly how these are going to work and what they're going to add!

be good to know what they even do, doesn't seem that even nintendo know what their functionality will be outside of smash

Was hoping it would be £8-10 range, seeing as I'm fairly certain it will be $15 (always a bit cheaper) in the US I'll either just pick some up (or ask my old man to get me a few) next time I go over to visit family.

Pre ordered Link and Fox. Will hopefully get some more when we actually know more about them.

THE FUTURE IS HERE REAL LIFE DLC.

WHOOOOOOOOOO

I will pick up the figures when cheaper.

I'll probably buy some just for a collection next to the wii u. There are some chars I definitely want, strange I find myself wanting these things at this age.

It seems I was wrong in assuming these toys would appeal only to those below the age of twelve.

Is Charizard confirmed for one of these?

Nintendo have said every SSB character will be getting an Amiibo. As above said :P

Is there a reason when you search amiibo on there it shows some for Wii U and some for 3ds - thought it was just for the wii u...or is it coming for the 3ds...surely would/should be cross compatible anyway............?

What, exactly, do these do? To my innocent young mind it looks like a cynical attempt to gouge the few loyal Nintendo fans who haven't moved on?

they're releasing an adapter next year so that you can use it for the 3DS family of systems.

The only thing we know is they can be leveled up beyond level 9 (to level 50) in smash bros, and can fight for you in a friends-only game.
They don't add characters, or levels, or movesets to the game, so they're not DLC (yet at least).

So far, only Smash Bros has any confirmed functionality. I like the idea where you can use one or more amiibo characters to train yourself in Smash Bros and they'll constantly change so you're not facing a fixed CPU character.

There's no way I can leave out the mental opening E3 opening vid that showed off the concept (and Iwata and Reggie duking it out hand to hand) - youtube.com/wat…-bg
According to ol' Reggie:
“The specifics of the gameplay will be unique to the game, and it is really up to the developer to program. So you will have a developer create a mechanism like what Mr. Sakurai is doing, where it really is a leveling up mechanic. And you’ll have other developers taking different approaches. You might have a developer decide, you know what, I want to reward someone who has purchased multiple Mario games, and that really has given Mario uber powers. That’s the way he’ll program it.”

nintendo.co.uk/Mis…tml - some info as well as the video that was shown at E3 2014 (with a fun if slightly awkward opening by Bill Trinen).

i like to think of them of pokemon with nintendo characters (for smash bros anyway) buy figure, battle against it, train it, take to friends house or events and have it kick ass!

And since Reggie said the figures will evolve with play, that's a perfect analogy

I'm really not sure I understand. Couldn't Nintendo just have character files saved to a SD card or onto a cloud server? Why are the toys necessary?

It sounds as if part of the game is only going to be available to people who buy these figures and this could also apply to future games? I can't say I'm really surprised in the age of exclusive retailer pre-order DLC, DLC on disc and content being stripped out of games only to be sold back to you later.

The toys aren't 'necessary' but nor are many things in life including videogames. I take your point though because Nintendo could have doubtlessly done something similar to the alternatives you've mentioned. However, that way they'd not be able to profit to anywhere near the level they'll be hoping for by selling toys attached to the associated NFC-compatible circuitry.

In fairness to Nintendo, they're only seeking to cash in on the popularity of Skylanders and Disney Infinity by offering their own take on it. At least these Nintendo toys will be able to be used with a variety of different games, i.e. they've already intimated that the likes of Mario Kart 8 and several other games will in future utilise the technology.

If what people are claiming here is true then these toys will be for local mutliplayer gaming and online gaming when competing against friends, i.e. the toys won't give players a competitive advantage when normally playing online mutliplayer games.

I do share your cynicism to some degree though. That said, Nintendo need something to help turn around the disastrous direction the company has followed these past couple of years so maybe this will play a part in rescuing their fortunes. I personally won't be buying any of the toys concerned due to the fact I'm no longer twelve years old but each to their own.

Kirsty sounds like a ladies name actually.

I don't really mind that comment too much - I've long since made peace with the fact that my hobbies are seen as childish by a large amount of the general public (It's puzzling why playing Angry Birds on a phone is seen as more mature activity than playing a game on a dedicated gaming console but there you go).

Toy collection is also normally seen as a non-adult activity - which is odd considering the biggest and most serious toy collectors are almost all adults. Go figure.

Not worth getting worked up over - so just keep this popular saying by C.S. Lewis close at hand:
"When I was ten, I read fairy tales in secret and would have been ashamed if I had been found doing so. Now that I am fifty I read them openly. When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up"

I'm in my 20's and have a large toy collection mostly consisting of gaming figures and LE Disney dolls. I will never let anyone make me feel ashamed of it! Life is too miserable and serious enough as it is. My collection makes me happy so I don't care what anyone else thinks
