I've been keeping an eye out for a 8" 3G tablet for my Mum, as dealing with WiFi hotspots and firewalls, etc when out is a bit much for her.

Appears to be this model:
prestigio.com/cat…_3G

CPU 1.2Ghz Quad core ARM Cortex A7 MTK8389
GPU: PowerVR SGX 544
1GB RAM
1024x768 IPS
8GB Internal / supports 32GB SD card
2Mpixel back camera / 0.3 Mpixel front camera
GPS / A-GPS
4600mah battery

Seems like a good price for a 3G tablet. Never head of Prestigio before but the reviews on the Maplins site are mostly quite positive. Looking at it in store, it does have a rather large surround, which some people might not like but it does give you something to hold without accidentally touching the screen

Couldn't find many other reviews. There's one on Amazon here
amazon.co.uk/Pre…GDQ
and a review of a completely different model here but it might be of some use in assessing the quality of the brand:

I woudn't buy any Prestigio device, their customer support is really bad

This may help you. It is over a year old. You may be best of with a 4g tab from ee, as reception may be better depending where you are.

Given how many awesome tablets there are in the marketplace from established manufacturers Samsung, Asus, Lenovo, Apple etc then this one even at £29.99 would be a reluctant buy nevermind £129.99.

You can buy a ASus transformer tablet from Argos,10" and its only £129 this prestigio stuff is rubbish, avoid!
Already returned one to carphone warehouse, what a lot of rubbish!

Please don't buy this doveman007, it's a poor deal. You could, for example, get the highly-rated Hudl for less:

Now on my 3rd 8" Prestigio tablet (bought from Maplin last December). 1st one failed - wouldn't turn on one day, 2nd one; the battery failed (toasted according to the Maplin tech guy !!! CANNOT recommennd this tablet OR brand. Dreadfull quality and lots of bloatware. Buy something else from a reputable dealer where you can go IF your device is faulty. Thankfully I bought locally & Maplin have been fine with all the faults. COLD from me.

Avoid if possible. "Santa" brought 2 of these to my house last year, worst tablet ever, kept freezing, wouldn't work with furby boom, wouldn't play netflix, eventually took both back to asda for a full refund- not fit for purpose. My Girls now have a Lenovo and Asus 8 inch tablets. Never had any complaints about any of them, also i have a samsung tab 2 which i never had any issues with either..

Thanks for the warnings guys, glad I posted here before buying one

None of the alternatives people have suggested have the much-needed 3G though unfortunately.

If you're still looking, the lenovo a8 from currys is same price as this and has 3G.

Thanks, that could be an option but the Currys/PC World link from the Lenovo site is showing it at £149.99 pcworld.co.uk/gbu…tml Only having Jelly Bean is a bit of a negative as well.

I got an e-mail from my Mum yesterday saying that her Sero 7 Pro has just decided to stop coming on at all, so I might need to get her a replacement fairly urgently. If there's no decent 3G tablets that I can afford, I could maybe get her the Kindle Fire HDX 7" from Argos for £99 but I would like to upgrade her to a 8-10" 3G tablet if possible, so maybe I'll wait and see if there's anything in the New Year sales.

Very have it reduced to £113 at the moment

I know some people don't like them but I have always found them all right.

Thanks for the tip. The link to Very from the Lenovo page showed it as OOS and I didn't think to search the site!

Ah, that's good to know thanks. In fact, makes it better than the Sero 7 Pro as that can't.

OK, ordered the A8-50 and Very have agreed to give me the £30 discount for my first credit order, so I'm pretty chuffed with that. Was dithering between it and the Kindle Fire HDX with the Full HD screen, 2GB RAM and faster CPU, almost twice as fast in fact. However, I figured that with my Mum's aging eyesight she'd probably just find a Full HD 8" screen a bit difficult to read, she's not exactly a power-user and doesn't really play games, so probably doesn't need 2GB and has never complained about the CPU speed of her Sero 7 Pro. Although she buys a lot of stuff from Amazon, I doubt she'll use a tablet for reading books or watching movies, particular as the HDX is apparently quite heavy and thus uncomfortable to use for reading.

Anyway, can anyone recommend a good flip cover/stand for the A8? I got the Sero 7 Pro one with it as a deal from Ebuyer and that has proved quite good, with no problems with it not being held securely like some I've read about but will obviously be too small for the A8.

Hmm, just thought to check and it seems there's no custom ROMs for the A8-50, so I might have to send it back as it means I can't use Titanium backup to keep backups for her (or restore her data from the Sero 7 Pro, at least from the last backup I copied to the PC before it died (and that's why it's useful to have an SD card slot to keep backups on!). I won't be able to use Online Nandroid Manager either to backup the whole system and without CWM or TWRP I can't do that from recovery either as far as I'm aware.

Apart from that though, I'm not sure that she needs root/custom ROM for anything.

Not sure about custom ROMs. The case I use was just a generic 8" tablet case which is ok but thinking of ordering one from eBay.
