Prince designed Purple Rain as the project that would make him a superstar, and, surprisingly, that is exactly what happened. Simultaneously more focused and ambitious than any of his previous records, Purple Rain finds Prince consolidating his funk and R&B roots while moving boldly into pop, rock, and heavy metal with nine superbly crafted songs. Even its best-known songs don't tread conventional territory: the bass-less "When Doves Cry" is an eerie, spare neo-psychedelic masterpiece; "Let's Go Crazy" is a furious blend of metallic

guitars, Stonesy riffs, and a hard funk backbeat; the anthemic title track is a majestic ballad filled with brilliant guitar flourishes. Although Prince's songwriting is at a peak, the presence of the Revolution pulls the music into sharper focus, giving it a tougher, more aggressive edge. And, with the guidance of Wendy and Lisa, Prince pushed heavily into psychedelia, adding swirling strings to the dreamy "Take Me With U" and the hard rock of "Baby I'm a Star." Even with all of his new, but uncompromising, forays into pop, Prince hasn't

abandoned funk, and the robotic jam of "Computer Blue" and the menacing grind of "Darling Nikki" are among his finest songs. Taken together, all of the stylistic experiments add up to a stunning statement of purpose that remains one of the most exciting rock & roll albums ever recorded.

ty what a blast from the past.

Good find, heat added

Best overall artist ever IMHO. Seen him 3 times including Feb right at the front at koko in Camden. Incredible night and so good live esp at his age.

Seen them both live but gotta say Michael is the king of pop but prince us the overall better artist.

Great deal.

Seen Prince three times in concert and MJ during his Dangerous tour in concert. Very different shows. MJ puts on more of a show, but Prince is more of a musician.

Thriller is better than Purple Rain and MJ never really released a bad album (except for Bad, which was amazing), whereas Prince has several poor albums.

I am a big Prince fan; have all his studio albums, lots of Prince related project albums (The Time, Mayte, etc.) and almost failed my first year university exams by downloading rare Prince songs instead of revising. I would like to see him return to writing with other artists, his self-penned, self-produced, self-performed albums are a little stale in their sound, whereas my favourite Prince albums, like Purple Rain, Sign O' The Times, Symbol, are performed with outside influences and real instruments, which make them sound much richer.

Just my opinion.

Does he really talk about the bible at the end of his concerts?
Not trolling, genuine question.

only brought this for Purple Rain and When Doves Cry! Still cheaper than iTunes and purchased legally!

Not that I can remember. He's just put on a really good show each time I've seen him. Definitely worth seeing.

I've never heard him talk about the bible either, he's a Jehovah's Witness, absolutely amazing live though , can't wait for new albums this month x

I have, but he tends to do it more for the american audience as they don't know any better. Even his longer jams which get a bit 'god heavy' are still fantastic pieces of music.

I love Prince, me.

Prince did a wonderful xmas song cALLED ANOTHER LONELY CHRISTMAS

Thanks for the info.
Bought the album as the only other prince album I've ever owned is the batman soundtrack, which I'm guessing won't get me any street cred

This features the great tune "Take Me With You" - a fan favourite that he played live on his last UK tour

I agree it's a bargain but I can't get past the Play philosophy of having to stream it. I bought one of their 99p deals a few months ago and I've never been able to download it physically to the phone.

Thanks OP.
FWIW, now price-matched on Amazon, for those who prefer that option: Amazon Link

I really struggled. Was in an airport. Got the hump and vowed never to bother again. My daft punk album still floating around in cyberspace

Cracking album, have been a fan since his 'Dirty Mind' album a few years before this album was first released. Musical talent just oozes out of the man and he's a joy to watch, seen him many times over alot of years and he never ceases to amaze.......
Interesting Fact about this album (maybe);- There's no bass guitar in 'When Doves Cry', he tried several different times before deciding not to use any, and what do you know,, it's a classic

Since you can get this album for 99p at both Amazon and Google I was wondering which company produces the better quality MP3s?

not 99p when go to deal 7.49!!!!!
