The wireless version of this printer is £10 more - https://www.printerland.co.uk/product/hp-color-laserjet-pro-m454dw/145807 £245 with £120 cashback I ordered this printer and I had the sells rep trying to convince me to buy "additionals" and to swap to a more expensive and a fair bit older printer - do your research before buying

I haven't seen epsons ink tank solution in action but I know the new HP ink tank printers use removeable printer heads so if they do go faulty or clog you can contact support during 3 year warranty and they will send new ones out otherwise out of warranty they are £24 for new print head set.

I reckon the same thing happened to my trusty old HP OJ6500a - after years of working without issue on refills it ended up not printing only after I installed the latest driver, I don't think it was a coincidence... I pulled my HP Photosmart 3100 out of retirement and use it now, however the new HP ink carts have failed (brand new, but sitting in the packet for about 7 years!) I have a few colour laser printers - my Lexmark was great until it got moved to the wash room and the humidity caused it to rust! My Magicolor 300 proof printer still works, but it takes a good 10 minutes to calibrate and print from cold. I just want to have a small footprint reliable colour printer - it seems a tall order these days!

NitrousUK

Interesting, but I guess it doesn't apply to this region. Happened to me over a year ago with a HP OfficeJet Pro 8710. Worked fine, then one day refused to print. It had updated itself overnight to block my non-HP cartridges. There's no way to turn it off or revert the firmware (beside unofficially hacking it). Making all my ink totally useless. I checked again a week ago to see if the firmware had been updated to remove it, but it even now states the "security" feature is still present and active.

Went with a Kyocera 5526cdw. Cheap compatibles / refurbished toner most places and if I have to use originals, whilst not cheap, they are amongst the cheapest.

I have looked into them, but I think the issue of clogging up will still occur.

Jesus, £700 for replacement toner ? There any Brother printers similar where toner does not cost the earth nor the printer. Need to return some Amazon items and we don't own a printer and don't want to go to the drop off shop for printerless sending.

999tigger

Genuinely shocked its not automatic duplex considering the scanner attachment.

greenant

Nice looking printer, resolution and lack of double sided printing aside, but I genuinely can't understand why any business would buy a HP printer. It's 5 times the cost per printed page compared with some other brands. And there's no hope to bring that cost down because HP proactively block compatibles and markets their subscription model to the hilt. Greedy manipulative company.

I was going to get the M254dw before HP discontinued it, and this one is now cheaper. M454dw is just it's bigger brother really. Slightly faster first page, faster page per minute, twice the memory, 50% faster processor, slightly smaller margins, second media tray, can take heavier weight paper, larger output tray, slightly larger, slightly heavier, and so on.

Is there no compatibles available from Xerox? With my laser jet just been using Xerox at half the price of HP

baldude

My HP OfficeJet pro is 2.5 years old and sadly toner prices are still very high. Also the ironically original cartridges that came with were starter pack and hardly printed 150 pages before ink was depleted. Hate HP business model. I've decided to invest more into a printer but low on running costs. With 2 school going kids there was never enough toner and pages.....

cjhilton49

Sorry to hear that,I also use Epson ink printers, and found that refillable cartridges(4) worked fine very few problems, but of course HP and I think Lexmark use tricolour inks so I don't think there is an easy to fit refillable cartridges, mind there are refill kits on Ebay, which means you could try refilling your original HP inks, did you complain to the supplier of the cartridges that didn't work.

Rupert95

Thanks @Mucka !

Mucka

I don't think it matters what usb cable you use for the pc side. But it does have the usb 2.0 on the printer side.

Rupert95

Question to @Mucka and everyone else on this thread. The printer is wired via USB, does that mean you just need a cable that has USB 2.0 at one end to connect to the printer and the other end needs to be whatever port you're using in your computer? E.g. USB C? The cable doesn't need to look like this?

Can I just say. I love this printer! I got it from rymans for £49.99 in store. I applied for the cashback by uploading my paper receipt and received the £20 within 2 weeks!

AdamWalkerGX7

I bought this a few weeks ago and setup was easy. Last week I changed my bb provider.....do I need to setup again?? Hope not as the instructions etc went in the bin !!

Mrsweet

Thanks Gary I think that's the prompt I needed, you're right that it's not good service. I'll definitely give them a call to see what they might be able to do, with the threat of returning it. Worst case I can always return it in the next week or two and tie in with something else.

garyharrisonuk

I know it's a hassle taking it back and I do believe it is a good printer with cheap toner but... five years old without a cartridge!! I would phone the store manager and ask for a partial refund or threaten to return it. It's bad service. What is he/she going to do with a five year old printer with no warranty and no toner.

Mrsweet

Thanks for the info! I've just discovered exactly the same. May 2015 manufacture date, and I didn't realise until I got home it must have been ex-display and the toner is missing (I know its only 500 page one). My nearest Rymans is a bit of a trek and not going that way any time soon, so unsure whether to keep it anyway as I also stupidly ordered an extra toner before taking the printer out of the box. It's taken the shine off a great deal! Don't blame you for taking it back.

Get a laser printer. Not a £300+ ink jet that needs ink.

jasee

Don't these dry up if they are not used for some time, just like traditional inkjets? And ISTM that it's only because the manufacturers have finally reduced the price of their inks to a more reasonable level that these are good value. THe price of inks has always been extortionate and totally unrelated to the cost of the dyes and pigments in them. This was how they made their money . However, what's to stop them raising the price of ink for these ecotank printers?

Depends on the Make and model but most HP there is a clear stopper you just unplug it and i use a funnel then just tip the new toner in. Cheap toners usually dont have one to stop people refilling but they can be done as well - there is a tool you can buy on ebay to do it but i just used a soldering iron - you dont want to drill it as the bits will fall into the toner tray and unless you dump it all out before you refill you could damage yer printer thats why the tools are all heat based for melting a hole in the toner bin! https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Toner-Cartridge-Hole-Making-Tool-Toner-Refill-Tool-Refill-Toner-Cartridges/281409955142?hash=item4185572546:g:vXsAAOSwEbVcGnIT Youtube is your friend https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=96&v=RhD7TI-esEk&feature=emb_logo viandant5 is the best guy on youtube for printer advice he is a genius! Submitted cashback claim on 2 Dec, almost 10 working days. Still not been validated, no confirmation email. Called HP promotion team 1 week ago, really unhelpful, cannot tell me anything other than the claim is still in validating stage and ask me to wait. They cannot do anything to speed up. Do not know if they cannot or they do not want. And cannot tell me if there is anything holding up the validating process. I also email HP promotion on 9 Dec. No reply whatsoever. Not even an acknowledgement or a reference number that they received my email and will deal with it. I am thoroughly disappointed with HP cashback. Next time I will have to factor in the wait, frustration and risk of not getting the cashback before I jump on any HP cashback deals. I claimed using my company name. For people who claimed through their company, what are your experiences of the cashback claim process?

Be aware that HP recently started locking down their printers so they refuse to work with any non-HP brand ink. They use an encrypted chip, so it's impossible to work around. So only buy if you're happy paying 3x for your ink to be HP branded.

You mis-read. I was saying the price of geniune toners, not the printer.

tony81

That's a good price for that printer,

huangxq2

I have not seen any colour laser printer have a good priced set of geniune toners. Mono laser printers toners are more acceptable priced. I have not found any third party toners which I am confident to use. I saw a lot of reviews have problems with third party toners. I have a Brother MFC-L8650CDW. The toners come with the printer lasted me over 2 years. They are getting low. But a new set of toners cost too much. I only paid less than £100 for the printer brand new. I plan to buy a new printer once the toners run out. Printing: colour, auto duplex, USB, network and wifi connections. scanning: colour, two side scan, document feeder (never jammed once in the two years), auto blank page skip, save as pic, doc, or searchable pdf. I love its scanning function. It is so good and fast for me. I will just keep L8650CDW for its scanning function even after I buy a new printer in the future.

huangxq2

I have the same feeling as you towards inkjet printers. I hate them after they failed me many times.

kevinhawkins46

I'm looking for a colour laser printer which can do double sided print and not too expensive on the toners. This seems a good price but the toners are expensive!! Its for home use but my son prints a lot with his school work. Any ideas??

Laser. Definitely. I've gone throigh multiple inkjet from print heads dying on me from dried up ink.

Jetaylor

Would you recommend that one over something like the cheaper inkjet MFC-J6530DW? This would be for an infrequently used home printer so used a few times a week but may sit unused for a week or two (which makes me think laser would be the way to go).

DarZak

This worked with old models maybe this one too? How to reset the fake “out of toner message” and instantly make the printer work again: 1. Open the top lid of the printer and leave it open. 2. Press and hold the “Secure” and “X Cancel” buttons at the same time. 3. Use the arrow keys to select the cartridge model you would like to reset and press “OK”. 4. Press the UP arrow to reset the cartridge. Once reset is selected you will see “ACCEPTED” on the screen. I reset them all by scrolling through the various colors on the menu. 5. Close the top lid. It will make a bunch of noise for a minute or so, then it will print like new again. Now the printer thinks you installed brand new toner cartridges, and you will get double or more the amount of printed pages from the same old “out” toner. When you notice the quality of the printouts degrading, THEN its time to replace the toner. Not before. While you are waiting for your new toner to arrive, take the old one out and shake it- prints will look new again for a short period of time. Buy toner when you are out, not when the machine tries to tell you what to do.

Agree, i was looking at the next model up but would have been cheaper to buy another printer than buy the £155 plus toner set.

eezageeza

Agreed, replacement toner cost is a deal breaker on this one.

drasim

The toners have about 2300 pages in them @ £40 minimum each (for compatibles) £160 a set for 2300 pages isn't good. This may improve over time but considering you're getting a few hundred pages in the starter toner I'd probably suggest passing on this unless you want to gamble on low toner costs in the long run.

Separate toners. You only change a cartridge when that colour has reported as low. You leave the others alone. As long as your documents are sent to the printer to print as B&W, your separate CMY cartridges should last plenty. Watch the video posted by TehJumpingJawa:

That's deffo the case with my old black and white Brother laser, but I've never had one of their colour models, would be interesting to know. I've just bought this one :)

I thought Brother toners were easy to refill, they aren't chipped they have a sort of small mechanical dial on the side that needs to be reset - you can buy refill kits online.

In the spec it says that the in-box toners are 3000 page for the black, and 1800 page for the three colours. This is the same as the spec quoted for the A grade model mentioned above at Office Owl. This is listed on the Brother spec sheet as the "Standard Yield" toner rather than the "High Yield" toner which is 6500 black / 4000 colour.

I bought the big brother to this HL-L9300 nd whilst the printer is good, original colour toners are approx £125! These ones might be cheaper, so I would suggest that you find out the costs of these, because it way adds to the overall cost
