The cost of getting a driving licence is being cut following a recent public consultation, the government says.

The fee for drivers applying for a provisional driving licence online will fall from £50 to £34 and online renewals after 10 years will fall from £20 to £14.

The new fees, representing price cuts of up to 32%, begin on 31 October.

Treasury Secretary Danny Alexander said the move was part of "giving savings back to the taxpayer".

As well as the cut in driving licences, the fee for driver tachograph cards - used by businesses to record how far their staff are driving - will fall from £38 to £32.

Transport Minister Claire Perry said: "The cost of driving, especially for young drivers, can be significant and we are committed to cutting costs where we can.

"Thanks to DVLA making large scale savings to their running costs, we have been able to cut the cost of the driving licence which will save drivers and businesses £150 million over the next 10 years."

Other fees being considered in the DVLA review include vehicle first registrations and duplicate registration certificates.

I have no excuse now!

That is their checking fee, which is on top of the renewal fee.

Great news op thanks, heat added

I have a full licence but tempted to get another one. Damm this site! Heat added.

The £4.50 at the post office is for a photo and check your application is error free like they do with passport applications, you pay the dvla as well so it works out the price it costs to renew plus the £4.50.

If you read towards the botom of the page it does say the following:

What's the cost
You'll need £24.50 in total. The DVLA Driving Licence Expiry fee is £20 and our renewal service fee is £4.50

thanks torries. glad I voted for you. great move

The whole licence photocard thong annoyed me. We moved house as it was introduced, the wife notified the DVLA immediately and got a paper licence with no expiry. I waited a few days to get the photocard as I thought it would save carrying other ID and no paper to carry. Discovered later that photocard was worthless as you still have to provide paper part and it expires every 10 years.
Pointless way of our government making more money from us.

Photocard thong, hmm don't like the sound of that. Damn auto correct.

Wouldn't class this as a deal as there is only 1 supplier and its still a ripoff to those paying hefty amounts of tax already.

Theory tests where reduced from £31 to £25 on 1st oct also.

They've also reduced the theory test fee and u think practical too

Typical. I just renewed last week. Expires in 3 weeks! Should have waited!!!

Pity they wouldn't think about lowering the ridiculous cost of a passport. They make £13 for every application!

Good Spot X)

This isn't a "deal", it's what everyone will pay from the end of the month.
Apart from that, what the government gives with one hand, it will take away with the other.
Cold.

DVLA is a trading fund and only around 20% of DVLA's budget comes from taxes. The other 80% is raised through these fees.

Banned

The people who already have a licence and will expire say this week or next will risk getting caught so I wouldn't risk it.!

Heat just for the picture!

What the government give they claw back on the other hand......vat on your 5p bag will no doubt cover any shortfall on this generous discount.

Really?

Last 4 years. Coalition....Were in debt debt debt, cut back, cut back, cut back. Triple dip recession.

Election coming.
Here, have some money.
(even though we're still in debt and borrowing has actually gone up)

Bizarre if you ask me. If the government were a small business they'd all be queuing at the job centre by now.

Still shafted in Northern Ireland - unchanged at £62.50 for provisional and £30 to renew.

This is despite all DVLA NI services being combined with the rest of the UK a few months ago, so why the difference?
