It's rumoured to be February or shortly after and as far as I'm aware compatible with PS1 games but not PS2.

the 80gb i believe will have ps2 and ps2 back compatability - thats why they got rid of the 60gb

See theyeve lowered the price and put in 40gb and taken the 60gb off the shelves

Now next eyar they will release the 80gb with a high price and they are re-releasing the ps2 in a smaller size so if you dont want the ps2 stuff just get a40gb if you do buy a ps2 or 80gb

I'd take anything about future PS3s with a pinch of salt, nothing is guaranteed.

Also the new slimline PS2 isn't actually smaller it's just the psu is onboard which isn't perhaps as big a difference as people expect.

John

I got the Woolworths deal in August when it was £375 for the 60gb, 2 games, 2 Blu-Ray films and an extra controller.
I appreciate that the deal is no longer available but it doesn't make this deal look that hot.

It's the best deal at the moment. There's not many 60GB about now so if you want one then it's worth it.

great thanks very much

I Called Zavvi Today 2 Get A 60g Ps3, But He Said They Dont Make Them No More And That I Might As Well Wait Till For The Lauch Of 80g Ps3 In Feb 08 Then About 3months After That A 120g Will B Released.

Really? It would be a bit annoying if Sony release a 80GB Playstation 3 that soon when I tried to get the 60GB version because they are discontinued (which I got by the way).

If it does end up releasing in the UK though expect it to retail for the same price as the 60GB Playstation 3 when it first launched, so around £425.00 or more likely. The chances are though that Sony could release a new Playstation 3 model with the Dual Shock 3 controller when it finally releases in the UK.

not a gd deal really, got mine from the zavvi/virgin deal on here with 2 games, blu ray and extra controller for £350

Sony got what they wanted by releasing the 40GB model and reducing the 60GB one as all 60GB have sold out and are like gold dust most places. However Sony have also kinda shot themselves in the foot as many people have bought them just to take advantage and sell on eBay. I see one on there now with a buy it now price of £550, that's just the console, no games or extras, I'm sure Sony would rather people bought the console from retailers at RRP than from eBay. Lucky I got mine about a month back, £350 with 3 games from Argos, bargain I say.

I'd say there is a 99% chance Sony will release another model with a bigger drive.

If you remember Sony are to launch a Freeview tuner for the PS3. This will allow people to record their programs to the hard drive. It therefore makes sense to release a model greater than 40gig IMHO.

Of course there is that 1% !

I am sure they will release a new model, but not with bc.

Thats gone, why would they add costs to their production?

BC doesn't add costs it's software emulation in the European PS3's not hardware so it's just software they already have they have to put on the console. I've not heard anything about the 80GB model over here but it is already out in the USA, however Japan appear only to have the 40GB model. Of course we all know that for a company like Sony to be buying 80GB HDD's in such bulk will cost next to nothing more than 40GB HDD's which are pretty much extinct in modern PC's, however Sony will see this as a reason to justify an inflated price.

I don't see the point in waiting for a more expensive model when you can get a cheaper one now and if needed get an external USB HDD, especially when the PS3 gets a Divx codec, which has been confirmed to be on it's way. That way you can record TV on the PS3 and transfer to PC easily for DVD burning or stick films encoded in Divx from your PC onto the external HDD then plug into the PS3 and watch upscaled to 1080p.

Oh and the reason Sony don't include BC on the 40GB models is to encourage customers to buy new PS3 games rather than playing the old PS2 games they say.

out of stck

Latest releases from Sony said they have no plans to produce another PS3 model for the Eu market, only the US and Japan have been given bigger HD versions. I could be wrong but Sony said that recently via press release.

Off course it adds costs. They've taken out a gfx chip or something. If it was software only then yes, it won't cost them anything. But it isn't so they have cut costs by removing a piece of hardware.

Or Google it, it's not hard to find.

Dont be so silly, of course BC adds costs to a console.

Support is one of the most expensive ongoing costs for any manufactuer, and BC requires a hell of a lot of that... Its software emulation yes, but it will require ongoing maintenance and support, and that costs money.

If they supply the feature they have to support it, and supporing an extra feature costs more money.

the reason they are dropping it is because ithey dont want to keep paying to put time into the technology behind it.

For gods sake, look at the date on that article.

use your own advice and google for an article that was written around the time of the 40gb release.
