You sure this is the 60gig?

needle in a haystack.

Is the 60 gb one special? There's another deal on here for an 80 gb with 4 games close to this price.

The 60GB had backwards compatability with PS2 and PSone games and is no longer manufactured. People buy it for higher prices then usual due to this.

I got an email from Sony this morning saying it was reduced to £249, so this seems entirely plausible. No interest to me-hence email was deleted, but for those looking for one it seems legit!

Of course I am none the wiser if it referred to 60gb or another model.......... :-)

That's for the 80Gb, it wouldn't be for an item that went out of production like 2 and a half years ago

This cannot be the 60GB model. Its not available anywhere in Europe.

I heard they were available in Asia though.... anyone know?

So hang on... this deal is being voted Cold because it might not be true??? What a great idea! Lets keep it off the front page just in case there's any danger of some HUKD'ers picking this up...

Well, today I had to laugh, went into Makro, and there sitting in the clearance section was a 60GB PS3 marked up as reduced from £399 to £299 + VAT, box had previously been opened and a missing sticker of the following items, USB lead, AV Lead and AV Scart Adaptor.

Knowing that Makro have had some good clearance offers on PS3s lately (someone on this thread picked up a 40GB one from the same store I went into for £160), I took it to the tech desk, enquired if that was the correct reduced price, and that there were items missing...guy told me that it was that price because it was "rare"!?!! Deleted yeah, rare nope.... £299+Vat clearance, missing items, most likely ex-display model, it will sit there gathering dust for infinity.

Backwards compatibility was a huuuuuge reason people wanted 60gb consoles. Less so now as people wont still have a stack of PS2 games that they still play.
Anyway these are "rare" and are the best model you can get. I got my one 2 years to this week (as a bday present ) and have been offered a lot of money for it but like I say its no different to me as I dont use ps2 disks any longer...

How much have you been offered?

I agree, not only backwards compatability, but also the multi memory card reader and twice as many USB ports make this the best model.

The 60gb however, seems to be the most prone to failure.

I'd avoid it like the plague, especially as it is clearly going to be stock thats at least 2 years old. I doubt it even has warranty.

I'm not saying that all 60gb are going to fail. Just that there are considerably more cases of 60gb's failing than any other variant.

These are not "rare" just a "deleted" model, whilst I agree technical specs were much better having SACD support, more USB slots, PS2 support (partial hardware, PS2 GPU, Emotion Engine CPU emulated through software unlike NTSC models) they really are not worth more than current 80GB models reduced to 249.

One quick look at the second hand inflation market at CEX and you can see a plethora of these for sale either boxed or unboxed between 250-265 quid. If anyone was trying to sell one second hand, I would use that as a good gauge, and at least with CEX you get a 12 month warranty, I personally wouldn't think a 60GB PS3 sold second hand without any warranty would fetch more than 200 quid at a push!

Right because SECOND HAND they sell for 250-265 at CEX with warranty, privately you should be paying a lot less

I'm not talking about the price "worth", i'm talking about the "worth" of which version being better, which of course is the 60Gb

And I was talking about the worth price wise even though technically it is better! Its not worth more price wise even though it is technically better on the second hand market as stated, you said I was wrong!

Thanks for that, All i can tell you that it was ticketed 60gb ps3 £240. Right next to it was the 80gig £250 (with games). As I say seems like a great deal if you need one. Hopefully someone will pick it up on the back of this and enlghten us all!

It may be "ticketed" as a 60Gb, but was it actually one? an easy way to recognise is the 4 USB ports at the front

Absolute rubbish. Do you just make up nonsense on the spot?

Anyway I'm happy I got a 60GB in 2007. I still buy PS2 games which I never got a chance to play as I never had a PS2. My most recent purchase was Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3.

In terms of 'value', that is upto the buyer. I had two of the 60GB consoles (brand new) and I sold the other one for £550 with no games. So its obviously worth a lot to some people.

So there was just the one available at this price?

If not, have you returned to the store since & seen it again?

Could you take a photograph to demonstrate the offer?

Sorry, but I would say that if there is just a single example of this "deal" then it should be expired.

However, if it does come with a 12 month, or even 2 year, warranty then this price is very competitive.

Pity I do not live near Perth

BFN,

I've been to the Perth Asda today and it's definitely a 60Gb PS3, although I couldn't check to see if it had 4 USB ports or whatever because it's a 'take to checkout' box if you want to buy and all the PS3 offers had the same photo of a PS3 on them. Is the rare one the only 60 Gb PS3?

I know nothing about PS3's - is this cold because of the price, or because people dispute it is the PS3 claimed? I can go back with a little more time, and have a good look at the real article if it sounds promising.

The original model released in Europe (and, hence, the UK) did have a 60Gb hard drive on-board. It also had 4 USB ports & a memory card reader built-in.

What sets it apart from every other console since is the fact that it had "backward compatibility" with most (PAL) PS2 titles.

All PS3 consoles can play original Playstation (PS1) titles from their native region.

As was mentioned above, the console has long since been discontinued, but that should not stop Asda offering a 12 month warranty (in their standard conditions for sale) on the item unless they explicitly state it has a reduced warranty term, or no warranty at all, if it is a "clearance" item.

As an indication of "worth" here, several 60Gb models have been offered for sale in the "For/Sale" forum since the new "PS3 Slim" was announced; mostly between £200 & £250, and not one has secured the asking price. Nobody has come in & offered the seller's price immediately.

One ]listed today failed to get any any interest at the asking price of "210 ONO".

The problem now is that although the 60Gb console is desirable to somebody with a back catalogue of PS2 games, to the average punter (in Perth, for example), they can see an 80Gb model with a bundle of games for £230, or the new 120Gb Slim model for a similar price, and leave the 60Gb one behind.

Therefore you would not make a great deal (if any) profit on it if you bought it to re-sell.

If I was in Perth (rather than Kent) I may well be tempted to go in & buy it, but after insured courier charges are added on top it makes a very expensive addition to my collection (as a "backup" for my own 60Gb model).

PS. If you use Google [*] to search for references including keywords such as:

Koller PS2 Backwards Compatibility "Not Coming Back"

...you will read reports of Sony Computer Entertainment (of) America's Marketing Director, John Koller, confirming that PS2 backward compatibility is never likely to return to the PS3 console.
