PS3 is the most advanced computer system that serves as a platform to enjoy next generation computer entertainment contents in the home, realized through the combination of Cell and RSX processors, in addition to the playability of a vast catalog of PlayStation and PlayStation 2 software titles.
Having Giga-bit Ethernet and a pre-installed hard disk drive (HDD) as standard in PS3, users will be able to download a variety of contents as well as access on-line games and services over the network.
Equipped with basic input/output ports, PS3 supports a broad range of displays from conventional NTSC/PAL standard TVs to the latest full HD (1080i/1080p) flat panel displays, offering the joy of the most advanced computer entertainment contents to homes around the world. For use in living rooms, maximum heat and noise reduction has been achieved with a noise level equivalent to that of the current slim-line PlayStation 2.
With the overwhelming computational power of the Cell processor, PS3 is capable of playing back content from Blu-ray (BD) disc at a bit rate of multiplex 48Mbps with ease, the maximum bit rate defined in BD standards.
The new controller for PS3 has been created by refining and improving the world's most popular PlayStation controller which has shipped more than several hundred million units worldwide. The controller for PS3 employs a high-precision, highly sensitive six-axis sensing system that is capable of processing all parameters within the controller itself, thereby eliminating the need for any additional settings on the display system. By applying this technology, it will become possible to freely control the PS3 system over the network.

Thanks for adding the details and pic.

3 games must work out at around £120 if they are going to be £40.00 each.

This has been on there site for a good few months at this price, i doubt it will be taken off any time soon.

With a bit of luck the price will go down though eh

Would be nice to know how many preorders they have already got.. could be a waste of time for people to preorder if they already have plenty.

might not buy one just yet lol

Personally I am not that excited by the ps3, its very expensive for what it is and like the ps2 Sonys gone its own route instead of working with developers so it will be a long time before anyone gets to anything near what the machine may be capable of. That said I think you will get some bargins eventually hardware wise as the ps3 will be sonys weapon of choice when trying to ram blu ray down the publics throat as the 'next big format' so this could all get very interesting. Worth noting that every play.com pre-order has been grossley oversold so far so if you really want one on launch day goto the reliable e-tailers like Amazon

apparently its been a flop in the USA, they were left on the shelf soon after launch, there going to be forced to lower the price i think to have a successful launch in the UK.

Shame quidco doesnt do cashback for console sales through play.com. I don't understand why though, anyone shed any light?

Profit margin based Caesar, retailers despite what everyone thinks do not make money on console sales. Hence why nearly all high street stores put them into bundle deals so they at least make something on the games they are putting with them.

well ERP will be £50 each game, i dont know if we will see retailer competition, if we do it will be later on after the launch.

profit is indeed too small, when the PS2 came out wholesale was at something ridculous like £280 then you have vat to add per unit :?

XBOX 360 Premium + 2 Wireless Controllers + 1 game is at £269.99 (less than half of PS3!!)
]here

It's been quite a flop in the USA. People are reporting 10+ units just sitting on the shelves. $800 for the console and about $80 for one game is too much for them. We end up paying double that here in most cases.

Also Microsoft are working on the XBOX 360 v2; 65nm processor, HDMI, 120GB HD are some features to be expected, all for around half the PS3 price.

Sony are losing $300 on each 20GB PS3 sold, don't expect a price drop for a long while.

I really want one of these but not the best looking thing. Most photos only show you the good sides! Shape isnt the most important element but surely they could of come up with something better? Still who cares when the graphics blow you away!

Personally, at that price I'd rather wait a year to see how it goes down...

shld be an interesting fight between the 3 major consoles come march

Sheesh that is one fugly angle deal_or_no_deal

The plastic flappy thing is of horrific quality too.

You mean the whole thing? lol

There are definitely more flattering images of it around though

i dont think we will see a too high of a demand for ps3, unless they ship a low amount.

I would buy one just to sell on if i thought there would be demand but cant see it, all the demand for the other consoles were really at the christmas periods (when everybody wants to get there kids the best toy or treat themselves)

I also read a article where they compared games graphics that are both on ps3 & 360, 360 came out on top & @ half the price you can get a full bundle with games

I think we will see the PS3's visual capabilities outclass the 360's later in its life cycle, once folk are more accustomed to developing for it, and if they use the space available on the blu ray format for more than just lower compression rates.

All this money, and you get a huge console.. a controller without a rumble feature and you have to wait at least a year before any of the games start to show what the hardware is capable of.. think Sony may finally get what they deserved unless the ps3 pulls something awesome out of the bag, which as usual won't be down to Sonys own developers. Personally I think between the 360 and the Wii and the fact you will forever be able to own both and some games for the price of just the ps3 this could turn into a famous loss for sony. Only time will tell though

£550!! I think not - I could get a pretty decent TV for that much money.
Plus the real benefits of this console won't be seen until people get more 1080p TVs, and start buyign blu-ray DVDs. Given that most people don't have the former, and the latter are going to be bloody expensive too I can't see there being a mad rush for this like there was for the Wii.
Presumably the 60GB can be used for other things - e.g. can I download and play DivX files on it, or will it be crap like the XBox and insist on only live streaming from a Windows Media Centre PC?

I am very excited about the release of the PS3 - considering I was a solitary owner of a PS1 and PS2 i have a lot of accessories already purchased and the PS3 is not as expensive as everyone thinks when you consider the 360 accessories needed to get it up to scratch.

Takes this for example: (my situation but surely other similar ones exist)

PS3

£425.00 - 60GB console
£49.99 - a top game
(as a PS2 owner I already own a USB headset and an eyetoy which are compatible)

XBOX 360 (and the accessories needed to make it the equivalent of the PS3)

£269.99 - XBOX Premium Package + PGR 3
£129.99 - HD DVD Drive (equivalent of Blu Ray drive)
£29.99 - XBox360 Live Vision Camera (equivalent of eyetoy)
£34.99 - 12 Month Xbox Live subscription (free net play on PS3)
£54.99 - XBox 360 Wireless Adaptor (equivalent of Wi-FI - essential to me as I have wireless internet connection)

EDIT: ALL prices taken from www.play.com

TOTALS

PS3 - £474.99 XBOX 360 - £519.95

I can see that not everyone will need the wireless network adaptor but subtracting the price of that makes the 360 just £10 cheaper.

Then there is my back catalogue of PS2 games and the remote play/streaming facilities of the PSP that I own.

It annoys me slightly that everyone thinks the PS3 is so expensive 'out-of-the-box' where it offers a Next Gen console, a next gen drive (blu-ray) and free online gaming for LESS than the 360 does...

I find that too expensive, i could buy an xbox 360 and nintendo wii both wii a few games for less than the price stated and experts have recommended this is a better option in order to make sure you maximise your gaming experience.

When i looked at the ps3 line up for the first year, it seemed it had hardly any exclusives and all the games that are available as multiformat will be almost identical in every way, so i wouldn't personally recommend it to my friends and family.

Also don't forget all the games are more expensive as well.

The PS3 will own the games market - PLAY B3YOND
(yes, I am a bit of a 'fan-boy')

this is my sig on another forum and im sticking to it!

"£500 for a games console? i dont care if it plays blue ray, billy ray, death ray or sting ray, i aint paying £500 for any console"

hehe

I imagine the ps3 will be rather dominant as (as that sony guy i cant even attempt to type the name of said) it says playstation on.

I imagine i will pick one up at some point as surely a good game will get released.
I imagine it will be a fair while after launch though.

I have seen that sig!

Will definitely be buying the PS3 but only once Grand Theft Auto IV is released.

ps3 is going to have dedicated servers for online gaming and be linked to your username throughout all titles, like xbox live? nope.

so that is £40 saved as you can wipe the xbox live from the comparison

the xbox premium is also in better deals than the one you quotes
the prices for most of the other things you quoted are also cheaper.

it comes down to who you want to have your money.

i had the playstation 1 and 2, however i then got the xbox360, sony have lost a customer due to their ' cant care less' attitude towards european customers, in price, delay in the product, stating that people who cant afford one are lazy and need to work harder and pretending that the ps1 and ps2 games will work on the ps3 when quite clearly the majority dont work on it.
i was sony loyal, sony were not customer loyal.

you pays your money, you takes your choice.

So have I, what forum is it on?

I've got a feeling it's the official PSP one...?

You can't wipe the £40 as you need to pay that to get online with your 360... are you sure you have understood the meaning of your post?
