Only difference between this and the older 40GB is the extra 40GB and it come with the new DualShock 3 controller rather than the original Sixaxis.

Also apparently the GPU in the 80GB might be manufactured using a 65nm RSX method rather than a 90nm, this would allow the console to run a bit cooler, and hence quieter and use less power. However this hasn't been confirmed as far as I am aware

Quidco is also available, apparently be
I think this is pretty much the best deal around at the moment.

According to Thrud111:
Nectar are offering triple points per £1 spent until 4 Sept if bought from PC World. Thats £293.55 with 5% voucher and approx 1,761 nectar points which equal 17 quid I think.

I tried it and it seemed more like a movie to me (albeit a pretty good movie). Sold it after 2 days as found the gameplay very repetitive and boring. The emperor's new clothes springs to mind.

very very tempted,, but going to fly to glasgow thursday so might be able to bag one at dixons duty free fingers crossed if not will def get this one IF they aint all gone by then

i dont think you can get duty free for internal flights

If you want one over the counter I got mine on Fri from Zavvi for £340 with any game, a BluRay film (only 3 titles to chose from but allowed me any film up to £20.00) and a extra wireless controller, came up as £405 at the till before discounting, best deal I could get locally.

"What this means...
If you are a current 40GB Core owner and upgrade to an 80GB Core you will see a rough average of 12.7% less energy being used.
If you are a current 80GB MGS4 owner and upgrade to an 80GB Core you will see a rough average of 36.3% less energy being used.

Interesting things to note. The power jump between the 40GB Core and the 80GB Core is larger when playing games. This is likely an indication that it does include the new smaller die for the graphics chip, which would be most heavily stressed during game playing."

That website doesnt look terribly professional, so Im not sure i trust it, but if it is true its big news. dont quite understand why the MGS 80Gb model would use more than the old 40Gb tho - I suspect their testing methods are.... suspect? Good news if its true though

80gb mgs has bc and uses the larger cell chip but it just might be a more efficent power supply and heat sink responsible for the lower power consumption in these new 80gb sku

Thanks for that but any idea the difference between an original 60gb and the new 80gb as that is my main concern hence why I may sell my 60gb.

shame GTA4 isn't one of the available games - not keen on any of the choice here, apart from maybe MGS4 at a push. Good price though, especially after quidco.

if you get the MGS4 bundle you could probably try and trade it in for GTA4 or sell MGS4 and get a pretty good price for it.

@ csiman
It will also defiantly have a 65nm cell chip compared to the 90nm cell chip in the 60gb. I would expect the new 80gb to be significantly quieter than the 60gb ps3 you currently have because it uses less power, therefore less heat generated and the fan will be able to run quieter. Apparently from what i have read, the 80gb is a bit quieter than the 40gb which is meant to be quieter than the 60gb...

60gb uk is almost identical to the US mgs 80gb save the hard drive capacity i.e. use the 80gb mgs as your benchmark because, like your 60gb, it lacks full hardware bc

Thanks but doesnt help in a comparison of power consumption. Cant see it being any quieter either as my 60gb is totally silent unless I put my ear on the console itself.

After all, it isnt a 360 airplane noise simulator

The new UK 80gb PS3 doesn't contain BC hardware unlike your 60gb which has hardware emulation so that it can play ps2 games. However there are rumours sony might be putting ps2 emulation software as an update, would be great if they do as my PS2 finally broke.

If you have a 60gb i would keep it if you want to continue playing PS2 games, if not sell it. If you want a bigger HDD then you can always upgrade fairly cheaply.

If you still can't decide the new 160GB PS3 comes out on Oct 31st which will retail at £350 apparently and contains about £50 of downloadable content. So if you are not desperate to change it may be worth holding out.

I ordered the one from Currys when it was £309 but had 5% off which made it £293.55 but DHL said it got "lost" in their system - basically it got stolen!! - I know someone who works at DHL and they said employee knew what things were and would steal the stuff they wanted to sell on eBay!! But yeh, anyway, besides me hating DHL I phoned Currys, annoyed, and asked for a proper manager and then got through to one and complained and got it for £279! This was a few months ago, only for a 40gb but it came with MGS4 too (which btw is a very good but very short game).

Dont forget Quidco

Cant find cheaper than this when you inc MGS4 by a long shot - HOT

Since the other cheapest PS3 deals around at Tescos and Dixons come to about £271 after quidco it works out you are only paying about £7 more for MGS4 in this bundle offer of £278.

Not sure it was, what about buying this deal, trading in or selling MGS4 for COD4, then buying Drakes for £15 new - £278 + £15 = £293 assuming MGS4 and COD4 are of similar value?

yep that is a better way , and cheaper,, its just the time issue,,, im off work all next week, and due to commitments etc wont be able to put any real time into setup/playing for 5 weeks,,, and not sure how quick PC world are at delivering on the free option, it says up to 3-4 working days,,, can still cancel play order as havent proccessed order yet,,, bloody dilemas i hate them LOL:oops:

Just to chime in my 5 cents worth...i just bought one and it tracked on quidco at 5%. making it £270.75.

Good deal, hot.

PC World have put price up to £309.00 :x

So its now £293.55 with 5% voucher

Just been checking out Nectar points and if you get this through PC World they are offering triple points per £1 spent until 4 Sept. Thats £293.55 with 5% voucher and approx 1,761 nectar points which equal 17 quid I think.
