In an age of loot boxes and microtransactions, few things are more refreshing than free add-on packs that add genuine value to an already excellent experience. Sony, to its credit, has been pretty good with post-release support for its blockbuster exclusives – and while its various first-party developers have all plotted different paths, this arcade-inspired Days Gone challenge mode is way more fleshed out than it has any right to be.

Set to unfold over 12 weeks so that you don’t trade in your Blu-ray just yet, these are a series of score-based challenges with leaderboards and unlocks. The first week, available now, sees you taking on a relentless horde against the clock. Freakers will keep coming until you eat the dirt, but fortunately you’re equipped with an arsenal of all Deacon St. John’s best gear from the main game, including pipe bombs and proximity mines.
The idea is to maintain a chain of kills in order to maximise your score, while undead deaths also add time to the clock. You’ve got just 60 seconds at the beginning, but some well-placed explosions will see your counter moving in a positive direction. As anyone who’s attempted the hordes in the main game will know, it’s easy to get overwhelmed, but that makes for plenty of replay value, as you attempt to come up with the best strategy to maximise your score.
In addition to the primary scoring system, secondary challenges like using explosive barrels add depth to the gameplay, while unlocking medals earns you currency which can then be spent on different characters and rings. Said superfluous jewellery augment statistical boosters, while patches can be levelled up and transported back into the main game. It’s a peek at what a sequel might look like, with RPG-esque character building.
While the overarching complexity of the mode is a teensy bit overwhelming, it’s impressive to see just how much effort has been invested here. There are online leaderboards, and tons of new items to unlock – more of which will be added as the weeks pass. There are even a batch of fresh Trophies for you to collect. With future challenges revolving around Deacon’s bike and other gameplay mechanics!

Seconded.
Got bored very quickly. Felt like a job, very repetitive. Easy platinum though, dlc especially free ones is always nice though
Really enjoyed this game, happy there’s quite a bit of post-platinum DLC being churned out quite quickly!
Hopefully I will have this game delivered by Saturday from the shopto deal. It seems a very mixed bag on this forum as some didn't like it when others are claiming it's one of the best PS4 exclusives to date.
Not a great game for a few different reasons, though free dlc is nice and hopefully the people that do enjoy it have more fun with it.

It’s divisive in the same way that people love or hate Mad Max. It’s arguably dull and repetitive, but personally I quite enjoy sticking it on for a couple of hours, riding from A to B, maybe stealthily taking out a few nests along the way, and turning it off having achieved a whole lot of nothing

At its best, it combines elements of The Last of Us, The Division, and even Red Dead 2.

I'm pretty certain I'm going to like it, I probably should of never cancelled my £39.99 pre-order but as always I take too much notice of reviews. One bonus going in this late is I imagine a lot of the bugs mentioned will most likely be patched out by now.

Really enjoyed this game seems to be known for being heavily underrated by critics then loved by the actual players.

Deal wise, is this an appropriate deal to post here? There’s lots of games with free DLC updates regularly released...
I cannot get that drifting + nitro for 5 seconds trophy for the life of me. Lots of rage quitting.

Sony don't have a clue when making a web site. I have to scroll through every month/year from current date to 18 years ago to get past the age gate on mobile (or just use desktop mode).

If you click on the year (2019) you get a drop down menu, then you goto your birth year .

Ok that works. I was clicking the year between the arrows and nothing. Still I am signed in, it should know my age.
best game this year and you're a mug if you traded this in.

I don't think it's really near being one of the best PS4 exclusives in my opinion, not with the great amount they have. Although they've put out a lot of free content and been constantly updating the game, so I'll give them that.

Great game. Didnt find it boring at all
Love this game. IGN's 6.5 was absolutely ridiculous.
Awesome game! On holiday currently but when back I'm looking forward to getting on Days Gone, imo ignore the reviews and play the game and make your own decision!
