Playing this at the moment and have to admit, it is annoyingly difficult. I platinumed Bloodborne and finished dark souls but this put them all to shame. Been one shot killed by the second boss over 20 times now. It starts pretty sweet and easy up to that point and suddenly the difficulty hikes up very badly. I heard Nioh 2 was even harder (open beta) but they are going to decrease the difficulty. One thing else I noticed is that in Soulborne games the difficulty will be adjusted based on your struggle. When you lose many times, the game would allow you to somehow kill the boss after a number of attempts but in this, it is all luck. Man I hate this guy... If he grabs you only once, it is best to exit the game and reload it...

The only way to progress in this game is to spawn other players that are at a higher level to you to beat the bosses. Then once you level up you return the favour to other players. Once you know this it makes the game a little easier. However I have to admit I gave up after investing roughly 40 plus hours on it - just to damn long and hard

That was my video of beating him, think this one was all about keeping distance so the ball and chain were easy to dodge, dodging through a telegraphed strike and stab stab in the back without getting greedy*.

* the without getting greedy part is always my downfall as I’m sure the video will show!

Too soon to give up for me. How do you summon other players?

This guys is clearly much stronger than my level 22 character. I’m dying with one hit. He’s still surviving. I can see he has invested a lot on his stamina and the armour he’s wearing is something you can’t get at early stages. I’m saying that because I’ve put hours today to loot items and had many repeats of same armours but nothing like what he’s wearing. That video is unrealistic.

The player is me and the armour I was wearing was from where I was in the game on first playthrough, no grinding: I think loot is randomised though so maybe I got lucky.

I can’t remember what I focused on stats wise but stamina does sound like something I would do. Keep at it, if I can beat isshin (sword saint) in Sekiro (6,836th attempt) you can do this!

what level were you when you fought him? And what did you invest to upgrade most? What’s that armour you’re wearing? Man, I’m struggling a lot.

I honestly can’t remember. I didn’t really like the game, compared to soulsborne (and even the surge) this feels pretty meh, the combat was very good but everything else felt shallow, I finished it once but never went back. Wish I could help more than the video!

My favourite game this generation
Nioh is amazing. I normally hate Souls type games, but this game really resonated with me, I don't know why. Maybe it's the whole samurai thing the game had going for it, I also really liked Sekiro so that must be it lol. The DLC expansions are good, but a significant step up in difficulty from the base game.

Onryoki was by far the hardest boss in the game for me. Took me about 20 tries and I got very close to giving up and ditching the game. It's a really tough fight on top of you having very limited equipment and little experience of the combat mechanics. Persevere though because on the whole the game is wonderful.

It's a similar vibe to central Yarnham + Father Gascoigne in Bloodborne. Huge early hurdles, but if you can get past them, you can beat the game for sure.

I ended up beating Onryoki eventually, and the rest of the game was a joy, enough for me to push for the platinum.

He is very tricky at this stage in the game, as CW says it is very much akin to Father G as being probably the hardest although some of the optional bosses (required to platinum) were quite difficult but in a cheap way.

As for any help, it has been ages since I've played it but I think you have a spirit animal (or whatever it is called) at that point and I suggest making sure you have it charged (ie kill a few enemies before the boss encounter) plus if you have other spirit animals then pick one that is most helpful damage wise etc..
Also just try to get the ball swinging action nailed down and only attack when you are sure you won't get hit.

Stick with it though. I played the beta, never even made it to the boss and thought it was too difficult but I bought the game anyway (because I'm an idiot) and found it to be an amazing game & managed to complete it.

I killed him on my 2nd or 3rd attempt.
Spirit animal thingy & fire amulet added to weapon.
Keep rolling under him and he barely hits you.
You can tell when he's about to spin attack so roll as far away as possible.

You use ochoko cups to summon other players, you get them from beating the ghosts of people
As for the boss he is a massive difficulty spike as the bosses often are on Nioh (worst bit of the game) you basically have to memorise every movement they have, move in for a few quick hits when you can, if I remember right he only grabs you from close so you've hung round hitting him for too long, if you dash and n and out I think the only issue is when he starts throwing he's balls if they catch you then he charges in and catches you again which will kill you, or running out of healing items. Make sure you have max healing items, throw some bombs at him from a safe distance, use the fire talismens to do some extra damage and save your spirit animal for when either he's nearly dead or he's about to kill you but you think you can take him anyway cos you still have some healing items. Your spirit animal takes the damage but runs out quicker.
The 2nd level I thought was the hardest level itself in the game I did a lot of running backwards trying to only get one enemy chasing me and throwing rocks to only attract one enemy at a time. An arrow to the head of one before they see you is good for groups. Some of the bosses towards the end really take the jammy dodger with one hit kills even then (well multi hit but they stun you so it might as well be one)

This one is not that bad, I am strugling with the next one. Its true this game take lots of hours of playing but I dont want to give up . Even when you are leveling up...that why it take so long, you feel that the leveling up doesn't help at all 😣. Once I have complete the game probably in 2035 I will buy tje Sekiro . Hopefully it will be free by this time on PSN .
Big Souls fan, taken a break from Sekiro still not mastered blocking its my own downfall. Playing Nioh at the moment loving it. Patience’s is the key with most of the bosses from what I can tell good luck!

Finally managed to beat him. Summoned another player and it was a breeze.
I bought this confusing it with Neir:Automata.

After reading the comments above I am having serious regrets...:D
