guys.

for a 3tb nas is this a decent price?

Bear in mind this is a hybrid android device as well, so yes, i personally think it's a good price.

you'll get those who believe that every piece of hardware is mere seconds away from all failing simultaneously who will advise you to get a twin drive setup, but this should do you nicely.

does this already have a single 3tb drive in there? can i add another one? i.e. either internally or via usb3

single drive only internally but has USB 3.0 port x 1 @ the front & USB 2.0 port x 4 @ the rear

looks great.. would prefer where i could add my own drive for a scheduled backup not dependant on external usb3

sorry but this isn't very good. it hasn't got the functionality/ flexibility of a dual drive nas. qnap are expensive but a good system if you have the money tho for a dual drive.

You do know this is a hybrid android/nas OS ?

I'd argue that it's got more functionality than most NAS drives - Synology ones included.

Could you give a bit more detail? Obvious 2 bay advantages aside this looks like it has more to offer than my current 2 bay Qnap.

it provides facilities that aren't necessary because they are already available if you have a smart TV or a fire stick. so you give up all the advantages of 2 bay machines for something that is already available for most people anyway. so basically it's a solution looking for a problem.

The QNAP QTS operating system, which this has, is widely regarded as one of the best NAS OS'es around and generally even better than the Synology DSM Software.

If you want an idea of what it can do, have a look here

That's funny. Are you describing yourself here ? I do know what it is and does and you interestingly have no idea who I am.or what I know.

I couldn't really give a stuff who you are or what you know but to make some of the claims you've made about this drive demonstrates a clear lack of knowledge of the product.

Any idiot would realise a single drive doesn't have some of the features of a dual drive system, but, as I've said, the QTS Operating system is rated the best NAS OS around so to question the functionality is rather absurd.

I will try to explain what I said for the hard of thinking.

The multimedia and android facility is what I am questioning NOT the nas OS from QNAP. As I said it is a solution seeking a problem as it gives a facility which is already in smart TVs and Amazon fire sticks etc. so for the vast majority of users it is probably superfluous as they already have those facilities.

so your repeated claims about how good QTS is as an OS is rather a straw man argument as I accepted that in my original post. However, I am pleased that you realise a single drive doesn't have some of the features of a dual drive system.

Ahhh ok, so an innovative advancement on an exisiting OS, according to you, "isn't very good".

jonnithomas

sorry but this isn't very good...

what bit don't you understand ? I'm saying who needs it as virtually everyone already has something that does it already. it's like someone inventing a really clever way for people not to fall off a penny farthing.really interesting but useless.

So you must still own a Nokia 3300 then huh ?. You seem to be opposed to advancements in technology so I assume you've stuck with a nice, safe, basic handset ?

Very much aware of QTS, I have 2 Qnaps as it is already and fully agree it's great. When I asked for more detail I was referring to the 'this isn't very good' comment further up in the thread as I thought it looked great for the price and was wondering if I was missing something.
