These look awesome. They can do iSCSSI as well, and are VMWare & Citrix ready

I've been running a TS-209 for a couple of years now. 2 x 500GB drives in RAID1. It's been splendid, and QNAP support first-rate, with very decent firmware upgrades. The home surveillance feature that was added last year is superb.

There's cheaper NAS out there, but nothing better. It's a cornerstone in our house now. Want a TS-419 now.....

Don't forget, you can get free shipping here : AVFORUMS

can you tell me if this will also play media files, such as photos and films?

here it says

"The TS-210 Turbo NAS is not only an ideal storage server but also a multimedia station to enhance your home entertainment experience. The built-in UPnP/ DLNA media server (with TwonkyMedia enabled) of the Turbo NAS supports gaming consoles for media playing and the NAS works well with NFS-supported High-Definition (HD) digital media players. Moreover, the AJAX web interface is provided for you to manage the applications of the Turbo NAS in a more intuitive way."

i dont really know what half of that means, but am looking for a hard drive i can put under the tv, connected to the network, store and watch films from etc, and have access to via NAS when working away from home.

Same question I have. I'm looking for something to store photos that I can have access to anywhere.

Yes, you can configure it to let it be available anywhere. QNAP even make a iPhone app for easy access...

It can't play the files, but it can serve them via it's in-built Twonky (in my opinion, the best!) DNLA UPnP Media Server to any device which can read/play. That's things like an Xbox, PS3, AppleTV even.

Thanks for that. Since you appear to know your stuff, hope you don't mind answering another question. I've built a couple of websites using Joomla! that I pay hosting fees for. Would I be able to relaibly host them myself using a NAS like this?

You could yeh - it comes with PHP and stuff installed to be a basic webserver. Infact, QNAP even have a guide on how to do Joomla.. qnap.com/pro…asp

You need to be confident that your broadband connection at home is fast enough to support however many users you're going to get, though

Dabs have this with 2 * 1TB drives for £259.99

dabs.com/pro…rch

Quidoco curently have a £10 off code and 3% back, so that would make it £242.50, so only just over £80 mare than this.

I contacted Dabs to try and find the speed of the 1TB drives it comes with, and Dabs came back with a stock "We can't answer that" question.. Which is a shame, or i would have considered it.

You can get a similar price from Scan though with 2 * 1TB drive!

What 1GB drives would you recommend then.

You definitely want 7200rpm drives, usually a touch more expensive.. as for drives, it's really up to you what drives you want!

I bought 2 * 1.5 TB 7200rpm Seagate drives, so got 3TB in total for £276.. think the extra TB is worth the £30

Thanks. I get a steady 19mbps download speed, 1.2mbps upload, but I guess there's a little more to think about than that

I'm not too sure i'd rely on either of them to play any kind of file properly, but i don't know enough about the Freesat HD box to know for sure. My experience with the HUMAX FreeVIEW HD box's streaming support is less than optimal - and as far as i know, the wii can't do streaming over the network.
