hugely expensive for a home user. more suited to a small business, so heated for that at least.
No it's a good item, but seems way to expensive for a 2 bay NAS. 4 bays and it would be a good price. Can't believe it cost another £130 for another 4gb of ram.. now that seems expensive..

Very useful considering this comes with Plex and Kodi out the box, plus it has full 4k support and dual HDMI output.
I have a Synology NAS box which I've had for about 3 years now, been looking to upgrade it but I cant justify it just yet. The QNAP have got excellent rating and I would recommend a good NAS box for anybody who wants to securely store data/photos etc on a device at home which is accessible by all the family, I never knew who much I use my NAS box until a few months ago when we moved house and didn't have access to it for a few weeks, they are invaluable in my opinion. Heat added for a good find!
not sure on the internal memory config but if you want 8gb just buy Kingston memeory

I'm very much the same with my Synology DS115. I started with a MyCloud a few years ago and quickly realised how useful it was and I wanted something that did a lot more, so I went with a Zyxel drive, but soon found that the Synology ones were so much better so got a DS114 and upgraded to the 115 as soon as it came out.

Couldn't do without it now!
This is decent but it's a shame it doesn't do h265 which 4K rips will likely be encoded in... For example a h264 4K movie will be around 8gb and a h265 4K offering better quality sound and video will be around 5gb ... And this device cannot encode that

There brilliant! I've got the DS413j (4 bay) and its now 3 years old and only got 512mb RAM but I honestly cant justify upgrading it because it still does everything I need it to! Surveillance, UPNP, DLNA, downstation station is brilliant, my wife uses the photo app on her phone to sync everything so she's always got here photos on her and knows there safe! Cloud as well. 5 out of 5 for me
I am after one after my iomega gave up (my fault). This one is amazing but too expensive. Total 6TB solution would be around £400

I had the Zyxel NSA310S and it was absolutely fine, so if you've got two compatible hard drives, £65 quid is an excellent price for a 2-bay.

You can still do a lot on the Zyxel's - remote downloading, cloud server, itunes server e.t.c...

I'm not so tech literate; I thought most of the h.265 decoding is software (cpu intensive) based. Are there many gpu accelerators available in the market?
h.265 is the popular 4k codec its around 40 percent smaller then a h.264 4k rip and better quality.... the synology d216play has this option

its worth considering if you need it...
Ok this is better then the synopogy I just mentioned as this can run plex server and is more powerful. It's a great buy actually after research at this price . Shame I missed it

hi Sach, getting 3tb drive tomorrow so will check plex and speed of copying tomorrow. I'm not a techie so will only be able to comment based on my feeling of the performance unless someone can advise a tool to check speed of transfer. also, my network is not gigabit, 500mb at best.
That's great look forward to it price has gone up now
Good experience so far. I'll try to provide my experience in multiple comments.
Pls note that I'm non techie

1) initial set up was really easy. Just follow the 5 steps given in quick start guide and you are good to go in 20-25 min including stewing together hard drive.
2) web interface for managing nas is really good. I've never used nas in the past and still was able to navigate through the system (although took me a while to understand the concept and working of nas)
3) very good and easy set up mobile apps. The best are - file manager and nas manager. I'm using file manager to store my mobile pics in specific folder. Nas manager too is good in reviewing system monitor, setting up users. Switch off on some other servers like Dlna, iTunes, video station (qnap equivalent of plex) etc
4) useful apps/ programs on nas itself are - "download" a torrent client. File manager, plex, kodi etc.
4a) all apps/ programs on nas are easy to install through app station. Plex and kodi were easily installed from app station. I was able to update plex manually by downloading later version from plex website
