This deal is for a petrol grass trimmer from argos. I had a bit of a look around homebase, b&q etc and came across this one. I'm sure its not the greatest product in the world but hopefully it'll do my job. It appears to be £40 cheaper in argos than it is elsewhere (homebase and amazon at least).

Qualcast is argos own brand so you won't find it any where else, unless Homebase have a few left after they were bought out. From what's been said on here the stuff is supposed to be ok but don't think it's the qualcast of old it's just a licensed name now.

Correct - qualcast today has no comparison to the old company except to say it is infinitely worse and it was never all that to begin with.

Still price is good so may be reasonable value.

I am after a petrol trimmer - would this one be better?

Buy a second hand Stihl if you can find one on Ebay as most probably won't post out. You should be able to get one for the kind of money you have, and avoid the bent shaft strimmers like the plague!
Straight shaft runs with a solid bar and a gearbox, bent shaft is a speedo cable and requires stripping down & lubricating every season if you want it to last.
The cheapest Stihl straight shaft is £200 brand new, so you should be able to find a good used one for around £100, and it will last you a lifetime - not just a couple of seasons !

Just been using one,They are excellent i paid £40 last year for one from Sainsburys it was a mistake should have been £79-99p.

Cutting edge :-)

great advice - thanks

Parkers are quite good. I know a gardener who has used one for 2 year before it broke. And he uses the pruner and trimmer attachment lots too.

Remember you need to add a 2stroke oil at the correct ratio to the petrol too.

And brand new units sometimes require a fiddle with the mixture screw, as they aren't set up too good at the factory.

Would this be any good for edging my garden - not sure what the correct term is. Just after something that will create a nice edge up against the drive.

Where have we heard that before? Karrimor

Blaupunkt used to be a quality brand too, now it's been sold and the name used to dress up budget TVs. On the other hand I have some Karrimor stuff and it's okay for what you pay and we all go through stages in life with varying fortunes, budget TVs wouldn't exist if there wasn't a market for them, horses for courses. Not exactly sure what point I'm trying to make here, just agreeing with the previous post.

Latest is Goodmans with b&m
Still just Chinese generic stuff at the end of the day.

Just looked at this and it seems really good so ordered one tonight, I will report on it when it arrives. Thanks for posting this

Well I have had this for a while now and I have to say it is terrific. Yes I do believe that it is a Chinese engine but it is a good engine. It always starts second or third pull, I let it tickover for a couple of minutes, knock off the choke and give it some beans. The strimmer attatchment rips through almost everything but can do the lawn edges with a little practice. It feels well built in the hand and in use. If you are a brand snob don't bother, but if you are not it is a good buy

Top marks for SGS Engineering
